Rescuing A Neglected Palm

I recently acquired an old neglected palm in need of some TLC. In this video I transform the palm back into a healthy attractive plant. I start by removing old dead and damaged leaves to improve its appearance and allow more light onto the healthy leaves. I also cut back the smallest plants in the pot to the base as the pot is already too crowded.
I then trim off the twisted congested roots and repot the plant into a larger pot with fresh compost. After a few months in its new pot with high humidity, warm temperatures and good light levels the plant recovers well and puts on lots of healthy new leaves.
The next update video can be found here: • Repotting An Areca Palm

I hope it grows well for you, they are tough plants, so even if it looks like it's not doing well they can bounce back. The main thing is make sure its free draining soil and warm temperatures, over watering is the biggest threat. If its in very bad shape they can take a few months to show signs of recovery, they are not very fast growing plants.

It’s an areca palm. Mine looks just like that. It was in a East facing window too close to the glass and it got frazzled. It’s a pain to care for. I’m not sure why it comes up as an easy plant to take care on lists online. They are highly susceptible to pests. I’m about to toss it, lol.

@@coastyken7370 It's not dead yet, but most leaves were brown and dry. I cut all dead leaves and clean the few green ones with a mild mix of dish soap and mold killer (chlorine) and seems that it is coming back to life, but I repeated the treatment once more as the aphids are a persistan pest. I am keeping an eye on it but I think it will make it, hard to tell because the leaves grow very slowly.

@@redangrybird7564 have you tried to set up traps to try to catch the aphids? I deal with the same problem but with my vegetables seem to do the work. Oh and about the leaves doesn't the chlorine damage the leaves?
@redangrybird7564
@redangrybird7564 4 года назад
@@coastyken7370 I haven't set traps for the aphids, the chlorine mix is very mild and seems to work ok. I think the aphids keep coming back because you may kill the adults but the eggs remain viable and come back few days later to your annoyance. Cleaning one palm is not much of a hassle, just 10 min job, but a patch of vegetables? That will be time consuming.

many thanks for such an in-depth care guide! I was gifted a parlour palm a few months back, and having never owned plants, I still feel very lost trying to detect issues and sorting them out. I recently had my parlour temporarily under excessive sun exposure and this video has helped me sort out the leaves I lost to it! I'll take the opportunity to ask if and how often a parlour should be fertilised and with what exactly, as that is a topic I cannot get my head around. cheers in advance!
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N Месяц назад
Parlour palms are very shade tolerant and so its best keeping them away from direct sunlight. As they are fairly slow growing plants they don't need feeding very often, feed once a month over spring and summer with a liquid houseplant feed or a palm feed if you can find a specific palm feed. Over winter and autumn water a little less and only feed every three months, or not at all if you have very dark winters.

The palm is a dypsis lutenscens, not a chamadorea elegans which is the parlor palm. Many people make mistakes and call the parlor a areca, the parlor is in the family of a areca but is not the ARECA. A areca looks like a small Kentia palm and this is a areca palm, so don't call it a parlor because these two are in the arecaceae family but look different.

They are pretty resilient to root pruning as long as you keep them away from direct sunlight and keep the humidity high until the new roots have regrown. I used a houseplant fertilizer which is high in nitrogen as the nitrogen encourages strong leaf growth.

But recently I let it dry out and then watered it too much and ruined the tips of my new leaves. So annoyed at me how I made that mistake. But I see more new leaves. I live in the uk too so I can get away with just watering half a jug once a month I see it grow a lot that way

Actually palms if in a pot prefer to be more squeezed in. If potted in a roomy pot they'll be sitting in too much wet soil after each watering and root rot will set in easier. The pot should only be one third bigger than the root ball.

Sounds like its roots might be damaged, make sure its not over watered, over time it should grow more roots and stabilise itself, but make sure its well supported until its roots re-establish. If allowed to move the new roots may break off as they are very brittle when young.

I have a palm exactly like this it was green full and vibrant when I bought it and started losing its color and some leaves became crisp. I just fertilize it but still.had some concerns becaue it seemed to not be strong from the bottom. I decided to take it out of its pot and noticed tiny tiny bugs crawling. I removed all the soil and rinsed the roots with warm soapy water and rinsed the plant with just warm water. Should I let the roots dry a day or two and then repot it or go ahead and repot it wet roots and all and skip watering after it's in its fresh soil and pot. I really love this palm I want to save mine like you did yours

Hello, I have just watched your Basil cuttings vid, and was wondering, how many hours per day of grow light (artificial) should you give cuttings before they start to root, and then how many once roots are established?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 5 лет назад
Most plants will grow best at 16 hours of daylight however you can reduce this to 12 without a major drop in growth, but a decent amount of power saving. Make sure the light is not too intense at first and then once the roots grow you can bring the grow light closer/use a more powerful grow light, to increase the light levels.
