Watermelons basically LOVE my area! I live in Northern Georgia, and the summer days are nice and hot in the day, pretty warm in the night, and LOTS of rainy days! Watermelons are a breeze to grow in our area, just the waiting is hard. In fact, I just got a 16-pounder about a week ago!

This is my first year growing watermelons, i live beside the “power lines” and have taken a section over for my gardening, plenty of sun, Plenty of rain, plenty of hills. I transplanted my melons and on a hillside where they get unobstructed sun all day and they have spread out wonderfully. I didn’t realize I needed as much room. I just they stop growing before they hit my pumpkin patch. I enjoy the information I receive fro this channel and translate it to my regional grow season. Enjoy and Happy Gardening.

I'm in TN , and my Grandfather always told me to bust the Ground in the fall, add sand, and cow manure, and mound it it. Let it mellow over the winter , then plant in May or early June (I believe). He said sand is important, but the cow manure that over winters makes them sweet. Wheat Straw to mulch the melons. If they need water be sure to water in the late afternoon . Seems like it was 5 gal per plant. Just from memory.

The first time I planted melons it was a huge success; in a space of about 20' x 10' I had two hills (actually I don't do hills, but instead dig a bowl shape into the ground)-- one of watermelons and one of cantaloupes. When I was planting the seeds I accidentally spilled them! I decided to just go with it and I ended up with seven watermelon plants growing from the same spot, and 4 or 5 cantaloupe plants also growing from the same spot (separate from the watermelons.) My garden turned into an enormous jungle, but when August came I harvested 13 large Crimson Sweet watermelons (the largest was 35 pounds) and 23 Hales Best cantaloupes! I waited to eat the cantaloupes until they fell of the vine-- INCREDIBLE taste! When I planted these melons I set a soaker hose out and then covered the ground with black plastic which kept the soil warm (very warm here in southeastern Washington) and used standard Miracle Grow fertilizer once during the summer. Today I'll be starting my second melon garden, so we'll see how it goes this year!

We did watermelon last year, and they did pretty well. I mulched them heavily in grass clippings, which seemed to do the job well of both supplying plenty of nitrogen and keeping it very moist in the soil. Have you heard the trick for telling ripeness where the tendril at the end of the stem browns? It worked well for us this year, but I didn't know if it was just a myth. :-)

Save all your fall leaves and tul them into that clay.. clay actually has the highest nutrients levels of almost any natural soil around. For those of you wondering if it can be grown in containers or just a smaller soil, yes-ish. Naturally, as mentioned, plants have an incredibly large spread but the root system has an even larger one than the top grown (avg 15 feet radius with 4ft taproot but few feeder roots below 1ft). With that said, you can work with less, the plants won't be as happy but you may get fruit.

I learned how to grow watermelons from an old farmer 50 years ago. It's possible to grow them in a smaller area using his techniques. He also showed me how to tell if they are ripe without guessing. I love seeded watermelons. I don't buy or grow seedless because it's the seed production that brings out the most sugars.

For a shorter season and more cold tolerant watermelon, Golden Midget was developed in Saskatchewan and is an heirloom. To those saying they are easy to grow, it depends on many factors. I tried again for 2018 with only small varieties and still only got a single one off of a Sugar Baby vine. Yes I had a great garden with awesome drainage and fertilizing, watered it well, was in a spot that got lots of sun etc and still not much success.

I live in comercial watermelon region in drylands Brazil. Watermelons need a lot of water to come up, but after that they are very resistant to drought! Here we plant them at the end of the rainy season to produce at the beginning of the dry season. Thus: no powdery mildew! A good solution for any fungal problem is diluted milk ( 1-20). The farmers here fertilize very minimally their watermelons: nothing or a tiny amount of manure....Very poor white sands... Watermelons are native to Africa, where they use the last monsoon rains to come up, and cover the dry grasses. So here they are actually planted in dry pastures!

Nights in the 50s and 60s are fine if you mulch heavy around the base of the plant so that the roots stay warm over night. I grow Georgia Rattlers in Colorado. Summer temps here can change radically. The day time temps will drop 30 to 35 degrees at night. My biggest rattler so far has been 26lbs.

If you mulch, be careful and check often for pill bugs (rollie pollies). They love moist mulch and will start to eat your vines too and do a lot of damage to the plant. If that happens, remove all mulch, vine the plant up a trellis and get rid of any dead leaves or debris near it.

I bought a plant 2 days ago that had a couple of leaves and planted it in my (clay soil) side yard cuz i didn't know where to put it. I checked on it today after it rained last night and it already shot out two new stems! I'd say if you live anywhere in the south, watermelon's gonna be pretty easy for you to grow.

Colorado her at zone 5. I’m growing black diamond here and my two plants are massive. Lots of frost, one already is baseball in size. Really excited here. Also growing 3 honeydews. They’re also producing some fruit.

I never knew they were so difficult, my Mom grew them on the side of her house with us spitting seeds but we're in TX so good heat and now I know why she grew them by the house, she utilized the shade there. We have a sandy look soil with a hint of clay.

We grew a few Sugar Baby plants with zero experience last year. They were poorly placed, and probably received less than 6 hours of sunlight a day. We got 4 small, but delicious melons. Planting 6-7 more this year from seed, in a better place.

Our family did the personal size watermelons and cantelopes. We grew them up hog panels about 18 inches apart. They were between baseball and softball size and sweet. Ripe by late August. Update us on how you did with large melons in MI.

Northern Indiana here, planted 8 Georgia rattlesnake watermelon seeds in a 5x12 raised bed back in the beginning of May. I usually take a hose to the garden when I know it’s going to be really hot and then once a week any other time. I can’t speak on the quality of the melons yet but they are about the size of my fist now. The vines have spread about 5ft outside of the bed so far. Same bed has 5 cucumber vines growing and producing cucumbers. I was just doing this as a goof project and the vines are crazy but it’s doing good so far it seems.

I planted watermelon seeds in the ground in well draining soil here in Japan, but so far I have just large sprawling plants.. no fruit yet. Crossing fingers and toes to get some nice melons this year. My first try so wish me luck :)

Great video! I grow Blacktail Mountain watermelon directly from seed in the ground in zone 5. It is better for ripening in cooler weather than most other varieties. Would love to see a growing guide for cauliflower. Thanks!

I have been told by experienced gardeners that watermelons actually like heat and not that much water. I am trying some different varieties this year, one that was developed in Saskatchewan so should be perfectly suited to our summers (normally dry and hot, and this one may not be any different). They are also a much shorter season melon than the average one, at around 90 days. My greenhouse friend found a perfect solution to powdery mildew-just spray with skim milk. She said it worked immediately on her cucumbers that got it.

Regarding leaf mildew mitigation , never over spray always water from below leaf cover at ground level .

Watermelons are easy to grow. I just plant them and water until established. They're in northern WV clay soil and never fed at all. About 100 days from transplant........delicious. They do need a LOT more than 25' ft per plant though!
