Thank you for the video - it was enjoyable listening to you. I love the Meiwa kumquats which I buy in March/April each year from a health food store; 6.99/lb but worth every bite. I'm into my 3rd day trying to germinate the seeds (8 of them) just for fun. Incidentally meiwa comes from 2 Chinese words, "mei" (pronounced "may") which means pretty and "wa" (pronounced "hoowa" - "hoo" is short and subtle with air coming out of mouth when saying it) which means flower. I just went to your site and ordered 2 meiwa and a meyer lemon trees and have added my name to the wish list for the changshou kumquat. How long until the trees bear fruits?

it is easy to sprout seeds. what kind or where can I get root stock to graft them to?
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 7 лет назад
The seedling kumquat, will if given enough time fruit and the fruit should be similar to the mother plant. Kumquats are grafted to hasten the fruiting but the scion wood has to come form a fruiting mature plant and also to give the plants a desirable root system that tolerates or even thrives in certain soils. Generally we don’t use seedlings for the scion when grafting as it doesn’t hasten the fruiting. There are many types of citrus root stocks . We prefer the Citrus macrophylla or the Citromello. We do sell the Citromello if you’re interested.

Question-I have 2 yellow japanese plum trees, is it the same as a kumquat? Can I shorten it? It is 8 ft tall and the branches-total width left to right is 8 ft. How do I prune it? I live on the coast by Galveston, Tx.
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 9 лет назад
6996katmom Don’t think the yellow Japanese plum is the same as the kumquat. Could be a true plum or a loquat. They can be pruned by heading back the out reaching branches. This is usually done in winter when the tree is resting. If they drop their leave it’s a true plum if they hold their leaves it’s a loquat.

Hello I just saw your video. I want to get a kumquat plant but can we grow these on the ground in CT or do it need to be in a pot? I know you in CT too and I’m from New Britain. Thank you
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 2 года назад
Kumquats are not hardy in CT so they can not be grown in the ground in CT. It needs to be grown in a pot. Ideally, let the plant summer outside and bring it in for the winter and place in a warm sunny location until it can return back outside the following May.

Hello! My kumquat tree is in a pot on a southern facing balcony. When I purchased it in December, it was already fruiting. Since then, It has sprouted 2 new branches, somewhat lower that the top growth. They are above the graft line, so I know they are not suckers, but I wonder if I should remove them. Their leaves are now larger and brighter green than the leaves at the top of the tree, which are smaller, darker, and... harder? For lack of a better word. Are they stealing nutrients from the top? Does that mean I'm not watering enough and water isn't getting all the way up? Should I let them grow, in hopes of getting a fuller and more fruitful tree, or remove them so as to keep the growth to the top? Thanks for your feedback!
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 7 лет назад
They are not stealing energy from the plant. As long as they are above the graft you can leave them. Kind of unusual that the top of the plant isn’t growing though. Check carefully that this growth is coming from above the graft for often the understock (below the graft) will sucker and dominate the plant.

How’s the tree going Whitney? Mine do the same as what you described but if I fertiliser and water then they soon sprout from the older top branches as well. Hopefully you’ve had the same luck.

I've been told that apple seeds, for example, do not taste the same as the parent tree. Is this the same case for Kumquats?
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 8 лет назад
+GoBlue576966 If you grow a citrus plant like a kumquat from seed you will get nearly the exact fruit that the seed you planted came from unless there was intentional cross pollination from a different variety of citrus. One of the quarks of the citrus tribe. That said, citrus grown from seed can take many years to come into fruit.

@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 7 лет назад
Do you prune it at all? Kumquats flower in the summer on the growth from the previous season so pruning will slow down fruiting. If you don’t prune and it was a grafted or vegatatively propagated plant then the next question is how much light is the plant getting.

Water when the soil is visually dry, you can even stick your finger in a little bit to test the soil. Once it's dry, it's time to water. Citrus can withstand a little bit of wilt as well.

I am growing Kumquats indoors in NYC. They flowered in the fall while they were outdoors & the flowers turned into fruit. As soon as I brought it indoors and turned an LED grow light on the bloom setting, they started to push out alot more flowers. I turned the light on bloom because I thought it would help the fruit to ripen, not because I wanted more flowers. Should I prune the new flowers or just not hand pollinate them to prevent them from turning to fruit? I would like as much fully formed fruit as possible but how do I know how many fruits my kumquat trees can support and how many is too much?
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 5 лет назад
If you want to limit the amount of fruit on the plant, you can certainly prune away some of the flowers. How big is your tree?
@auditocanarsie7355
@auditocanarsie7355 5 лет назад
@@LogeesPlants Thanks for the speedy reply. The tree is ~5ft from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree. I would like as much fruit as possible but I read somewhere that you should prune ~1/2 of all the fruit off of citrus tress to ensure that the fruit that does remain will fully ripen. Is there any truth to this?
@LogeesPlants
@LogeesPlants 5 лет назад
We don't prune off any of our fruit here unless they are fully ripened or close to ripened. With a 5 ft tree, there shouldn't be any issues regarding how many fruits you get. Just make sure to remove them as they ripen :)

Hello, my I harvested Meiwa kumquats from my one year old tree from logees, but now the leaves are all turning yellow and falling off. I know that it is normal to lose some leaves after fruiting for Meiwas but is it normal for so many leaves to become yellow and fall off? The roots look fine.
