Regarding slugs, water your plants in the morning and not in the evening. Keep the area around the plants clean and tidy of any rotting leaves, debris. Hunt them at night, picking them off, eventually you’ll win. I net mine against birds. Hoops or frames works well to support the netting.

May I add a tip for people reading the comments. Before I planted any strawberry bad I would do you get the year before and I would work in dried acidic clippings Pete Moss etc. and leaves and overwinter it. The berries tend to like acidic ground but the best thing you can do is instead of mulching with straw I collect bags of white Pineneedles that are dry And use them as the mulch because as they break down they feed the ground and they’re also a great mat for the strawberries to grow in keeping them clean. Strawberries seem to be heavy organic feeders so bear that in mind when you’re preparing your strawberry bed. As with most gardening it always helps to be doing some thing a year before are you getting your dirt ready it’s the most important thing you can do in gardening.

Thank you for such a great video. I have grown strawberries often on over 45 years. I would usually order a variety of plants but it does get expensive especially since every 2 to 3 years I would move the bed running from viruses. I was looking at a basket of berries but I picked last weekend add an organic farm and I had perhaps 10 barriers left that are now over ripe. I go to this farm because they’re the nicest tasting berries I’ve had in a long long time. I am going to set the berries aside and I will grow them from seed even if it takes me until the spring of 2023 I am looking forward to growing several hundred plants. I have successfully done the runner method over the years I am intrigued by the seed method. Thanks so much again I love your channel. One of the best gardening channels on the web.

Great Video. Thanks The easiest way to grow from seeds is to take ripe strawberries (like you did) and simply squash them in your hand and berry them in potting soil. After a while they will sprout and you will notice that they are pretty crowded. Once they are about 1.5-2 inches in size, simply pull them from the potting soil (water it before to make the process easier) and place individual sprouts in individual cups. The other method I use is runners which is even easier. I am a small scale commercial farmer and I do that every season and it works like a charm.

I love that you not only talk about planting from seed, but harvesting the seeds as well. A couple of months ago we put out a video on our channel talking about how to manage and handle runners. The timing for this video is perfect because our Ozark beauties produce runners easily but these alpine strawberries do not. I bought heirloom strawberry seed this year from true leaf market. I must have done something wrong. Not one single seed germinated. I don't think it was the seed I think it was me cause I buy from true leaf market a lot. I've never got a bad batch of seed from them. I just can't seem to get strawberries to grow from seed. I try every year I figure I'll get the hang of it so oner or later. Everything else I can grow from seed but then came along strawberries 😜 I'm glad you did that part on growing from seed and gathering good seed from your own patch. Thank you this year I bought runners from the store.

Could definitely be Maria! Immature seeds have poor or zero germination success so that could very well be the problem. Be aware though that strawberry seeds do take a while to germinate and send up that shoot. Very slow growing at that stage. So give the seed trays a little longer than normal, you could still be successful! Cheers.

If you happen to put the seeds on a paper towel you can just rip a small part off with that seed and just plat that as well. It doesn't matter

I just did it today and it’s my first ever attempt 🤞 wish me luck 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓I germinate them on a paper towel and they grew a little green heads 🌱 then very gently I put them in the soil and lightly sprinkled with little soil on the top 🥴hope I won’t kill them 🤞🤞

Awesome thank you. I found the perfect strawberry. Ava star I grow strawberries it’s a constant battle for the perfect one. Or few. This year is a very short fast season it seems. I’ve only harvested about 3 kilo I need to renew my plants or at least add some and improve the conditions but the later is easy. Keeping the ducks and chickens off them is the first thing. My strawberry bed is a happy bed if you know what I mean the local children love coming to pick the berries on occasion and I enjoy the strawberry wine as well as the jellies and juices I make. My mum especially and other folk who suffer diverticulitis enjoy the seed free juice and syrup I make I shall try my hardest this year to increase my harvest of our humble strawberry 🍓 thank you for your information and help stay safe Pop by mine and say hi 👋 I have subscribed thanks again Ange and the feathered ones x
