I can see the benefit of setting it up this way, but I feel you’ve jumped to a fairly complicated solution. In the United States, and I’m sure UK, we’re able to sign-in to our TV provider and watch some Live TV. There are restrictions, but I’ve gotten past that by setting up a VPN at my house since when at home I’m able to watch anything. Much easier solution for remote viewing if your TV provider has something similar. Wanted to clarify: the solution in the video would make sense if you had a second property, or wanted a physical TV with remote control. My solution is viable for how most people would want to view TV, away from home on their phone through the ISPs app. No need to balance between VLC and a remote.

4:25 DHCP is the thing in your router that sets IP addresses of network devices, but HDCP is the media protection protocol.

50FPS is optimal for UK TV and set your refresh rate on your playback computer to match and it will be exactly like watching TV. No judder or frame skipping.

Nice idea and good execution, but I'm quite skeptical about the security of opening an unencrypted port on my home network constantly streaming with no form of authentication required. Sure people won't know about you streaming, but I wouldn't rely on that forever. Surely there must be a more secure way to do this...

In Holland we have a ISP called KPN. When you have a Internet and television package installed from them you get access to an app called "interactievetv.nl" you can watch the most common Dutch channels and they record almost everything for you as well! But nice method to do it my man!

cheers for this Alex, nice little tutorial i'd love to see more "life-hack" type videos or just simple little hacks etc that we could benefit from i know this channel is mainly for reviewing things but maybe show videos like "How to install chrome os as a dualboot" or "how to boost internet speed using 5 simple steps" them types of videos i think would benefit the channel and get you more positive comments/views :)

All the comments on this video that say there are much simpler solutions miss the whole point of why he's doing this. There are plenty of solutions to stream live tv to a mobile device outside your home, but they all severely limit what you can watch. And...they are guaranteed NOT to work when you leave your home country (at least that's true for U.S. satellite and cable tv providers; I'd be shocked if it wasn't true for other countries as well). And, at least with DirecTV, when I'm outside my home network I suddenly lose all my local channels on the DirecTV app. This solution, like a Slingbox, allows ZERO restrictions on watching LIVE television shows outside of your home, even internationally. For someone like myself who primarily watches live sports via satellite tv, I need a solution like this, especially since Slingbox just announced they are suspending service in November 2022.

I'm in Los Angeles and signed up my Samsung Galaxy Max mobile with t-mobile, which unbelievably includes England as part of the Los Angeles free calling and unlimited data area. So last time I was in London I streamed Netflix and Pluto Free Cable TV (owned by Paramount Pictures) into my mobile and transfered the stream to the flat screen smart TV with the Samsung mobile to HDMI out connector (US $65). It was easy and you dont need to know anything lol

Your incorrect use of "as to which" annoys me. This is also treading along a fine line with copyright/rebroadcasting copyrighted media - the fact that the video is HDCP encoded shows that this is the case. There are also easier ways to watch TV on the go, as others have said, many TV companies provide apps that you can use for free with your subscription. This is a much better solution, not only because of the legality and ease of use, but also because it doesn't use up all of your upload bandwidth - not everyone has fibre-to-the-premises, so even some people with a 100mbps download speed still only get 5-10mbps up, and if you are constantly giving up most of that to restreaming TV that you can already watch on your provider's app, there is no point.

HA!, you still have to open ports for plex... :), However, this does have its pros and cons. Plex has live tv is nice if you are using the over the air HD tuner. If you have the cable card HD tuner.. its not so great because some of your channels are encrypted especially premium like HBO, showtimes, etc.

Hello. Great video and thanks for taking the time to put that together. I'm looking to replace my trusty old Slingbox (which will die in November 2022) and have a question about identifying my public IP address. My problem is that my internet provider changes my public IP address on a regular basis, so completing a 'What's my IP address' before I leave home will not necessarily be successful once I get to my remote location. Any suggestions or recommendations would be welcome. Cheers and thanks.

setup a dns account ( like afraid DNS ) and get a dynamic dns updater , then you can use your url instead of an IP address which will update automatically if the IP changes.

I added a wifi on/off switch to my pc to turn it on/off when needed. Then I used the program 'Restart on Crash' to automatically start Mona server and OBS (and start the stream). It all happens by the push of a button on my phone.

Very interesting! What is the minimum PC power you can get away with if you only need 1080p quality from this? I'm considering setting this up for when Slingbox kicks the bucket end of 2021. But I don't want to overspend on a dedicated computer that does just this.

Great guide, well done. I like the setup. Since most residential ISP don't provide a static IP, you would need to use something like DynDNS or an equivalent provided by your router. Until I discovered OBS, I was fighting on ubuntu with ffmpeg and nginx, what a nightmare that was. Your solution has the advantage of keeping it away from those cloud-based solutions. VPN would be a nice add on but I'm not sure if the overhead would create issues with the stream. I wonder if an RPi 3 is powerful enough to run obs.

This is not the most efficient solution ever, especially since services like Sky go are available. Although I feel like mona server could be quite useful for some things. As Long as you are not going around sharing this stream with others or on forums and such there should be no legal troubles as I doubt anyone would care what you are doing with the service you are paying for.

There are a few things wrong with this first of all you don't need a capture card, sky box etc all you need is a TV tuner or something like an RTL-SDR which you can buy off eBay for around £10 then all you need to do is plug it into your PC and setup some software for it. Also I think you meant HDCP not DHCP. Also with the RTL-SDR you could use something like a raspberry pi to stream it for you or use it as a setup box and finally I think for most people this is redundant as many company's have streaming services like Sky Sports Mobile

The same video would also display on the Skybox because the internet stream is just tapping into the HDMI port on the Skybox. It's the same issue that the Slingbox's have.

@@Tom-fb6nz It is absolutely breaking their TOS. On the go, they expect you to watch Sky TV through the app, where they can regulate how many devices the account holder can view from and make sure you're only getting what you pay for. Not by deviating from their app. There's a reason why the box laces the HDMI signal with HDCP and that's to make it more difficult for people to do exactly what Alex is doing and potentially stream shit like Sky Sports to many people over the internet (or even worse, resell it, which is very hard to defend in court).

Because typically they're trash, 1.1.1.1 is cloudflares which is good and supposed to be more secure and 8.8.8.8 is googles which is of course good lol

Oh, this is just what I feared from the title...For anyone who doesn't already know, DO NOT DO THIS. 1) Opening ports like this makes you vulnerable to brute force attacks, even if you have a "login page". 2) TCP is the least secure method of communication, again easy for hackers to target you. I hope Alex has changed his home network ID and IPv4's, otherwise all the smart/secure home install stuff he does is now no longer that safe!

@@devilsknight Because I'm in the Canary Islands for the next 2 months. My DVR in the U.K. is recording all the programmes I usually watch and with my Slingbox ,which this is bit of a long winded alternative for, I can view and delete them whenever I want. The alternative is paying for a VPN and going to all the individual catchup sites for each channel. Not convenient.

Does anyone know how to set up the rm mini 3 with the sky q so that Alexa can control the box? As theres all names in the config list but none of them say sky Q UK
