When it comes to handling a tarantula, the word that pops into my mind is gently. Right? Although they're these hideous creatures that everybody's afraid of, they are extremely fragile. Their exoskeleton is thin in certain areas, particularly in the abdomen. The legs, in particular, again, they're not pliable at all and the least little bit of pressure could actually break them.
So gentle is the word. People sometimes say, 'Jungle Bob, you're so rough with your animals.' But when I'm picking up a tarantula like the Palomino Blond I know is not going to bite me, I simply cup the animal and put my hands underneath his legs. And this way he's cradled. I'm not smashing down on him. That would be a fatal event for the tarantula.
So that's how you could easily pick up a tarantula like this. Even though his fangs are right against my fingers, I know he's not an aggressive species and have to worry about that. Certainly, if he's walking along, the best way to pick him up is to coax him. By putting your hand in front of him, give him a little nudge on his abdomen and he will just gently walk where you want him to go. That's more maneuvering than it is handling him for sure.
And lastly, if a tarantula's got a good enough size it's fairly simple to, again, this is his abdomen and this is the head thorax, between the middle legs, like right between the two sides of his legs, you can gently grab his head thorax area and pick him up. That's not harming him any. You're in between legs two and three, if you will, on one side and two and three on the other side. And pick him up by grasping the body. That's the sturdiest part of the tarantula and that doesn't bother him at all.
Now again, handling tarantulas. They're a species that like to flick their hairs off that I don't like to pick up at all. Because even though you can pick them up gently enough they're going to be kicking the legs on their abdomen. You're going to have a mess on your face. Tarantula hair all over the place. Why bother? I coax them along. I push them along. I usually don't pick them up in that method. Nor do I want to cup them because their hairs come off of there. Agonizingly irritating.
So know your species, again. But if you want to pick him up, those are the methods to do so without harming the animal, which the most important thing. And without getting bitten, which is a pretty good idea too.

Howcast, if you're going to upload professional instructional videos, you should take feedback given by genuine hobbyists. The squeeze technique practiced by this not-so-gentleman is strongly discouraged within the spider community, and the rough tapping of the opithsoma is completely unnecessary. This video is encouraging new tarantula keepers into potentially injuring their pets.

Animals sometimes insect predators like a tarantula has a heatsensing or something that enables them to hunt and staying away from predators, they see insect or other small animal as a red small dot like radars if they sense somethings big they mostly hide or staying calm if they are used to, and why the tarantula does not attack because his safe he knows its safe so instead of attacking he remains calm if you are gentle enough, well you are good. And why this P. Blonde or dessert blonde is not flicking hairs or is about to attack, because they are not agressive species.

If you are a beginner tarantula keeper then dont watch these howcast videos. These videos have bad advice and their methods can potentially harm your pet. In my opinion you shouldn’t handle tarantulas in the first place. You can handle them once or twice a month but otherwise they might become more aggressive. My advice is to watch videos by people who have experience in keeping tarantulas for a while, like Exotics Lair, The Dark Den, Tarantula Kat and there are many more people but that are my favourites. Overall just leave tarantulas alone. They are amazing animals but they are more like display pets.

The desert/palomino blonde is just a super friendly, docile tarantula. My desert blonde has only flicked hairs at me once, probably because she was a little woozy from her car trip home, but otherwise has been very sweet and loves to be on me. Other tarantula species are more aggressive, depending on the type, but don't forget that they have personalities too! Tarantulas have their own unique traits and may react differently depending on such.

It’s good to see people are so brave. Else I’m so nervous and timid in dealing spiders. I don’t know why I just can’t take the spiders easily. Everything associated with them makes me restless. Is it a psychological problem I’m facing since my childhood? P.S. I haven’t generally encountered a lot of spiders in my life. Inspite of that I get spidy dreams.

Don't handle tarantulas. They don't enjoy it, they gain nothing from it. If you want to have a cool pet that you can handle get a lizard or snake. Also junglebob, you should tell the viewers that only new world tarantulas are gentle. Old world tarantulas are far more aggressive, flighty, venomous and they're faster. Old world tarantulas are absolutely not for handling

I've got myself a Acanthoscurria geniculata and she is really aggressive so how do I handle it? I mean I don't want to pet her but at the moment she is just about 6cm bodylenght in a 25x20cm terra and I will have to rehouse her at some point. She kicks very fast even before threatening, I have no idea how to move her around if necessary. until now I just own her and 3 tiny slings. My mantis and scorpions are easy to handle but they don't "shoot" or bolt around the terrarium.
@MorteGlory
@MorteGlory 6 лет назад
chris tobal I personally wouldn't. In the case of rehousing, I would simply set it's enclosure in a large tub, with the new enclosure in it as well. Then you can coax the T out of its current tank and up the outside wall, into the new one. It's what I had to do with my very fast, very mean heteroscodra maculata. Hope you got it figured out
@robertsides3626
@robertsides3626 7 лет назад
what's a good indicator that one might be about to kick hair at you, and what distance can they throw it out? do they have a stance for it like how they have one just before an attack with fangs, or is it just too quick to see coming? Do Chillian Roses often kick hairs? I have heard they are one of the docile types.
@MorteGlory
@MorteGlory 6 лет назад
Robert Sides it's a little late of a response but: they have no stance and will kick without warning. They can kick hairs fairly far, so be careful. Rose hairs are generally referred to as docile but I'll tell you first hand they're very bipolar. One momemt they will be absolutely calm and the next they will be very standoffish. Keep in mind that all tarantulas are "known" for some certain behavior, but that doesn't mean every tarantula will behave that way. Honduran curly hairs are known as docile, more carefree types for beginners, but mine kicked hairs and bit at anything I tried to move around in its tank.

Hello, i got a pair of questions: do all the T's react like that one when picked up? What chance there is that they will mistake your hands (and fingers) for a prey when cupping them and tag you? I've noticed that everything touching their very front legs and their palps triggers usually a threat response... +Chaoticme i repost this question to you too :)
@Kruziik
@Kruziik 8 лет назад
Like people, individual T`s have different personalities. Even in species that are known to be docile, some individuals are aggressive. Just get to know your spider. And with your other question, tarantulas can tell the difference between your hand and their next meal. If you do decide to hold it just be gentle with it. If you feel like you are worried there is a real possibility it would bite you then it's probably best to not handle that T.

Jackson Emick I wouldn't recommend a rose hair or taking Jungle Bob's advice if you're getting into Ts. There's a few youtubers out there like Jon3800 who gives better advice than Jungle Bob. For a beginner I would personally recommend a brachypelma albopilosum in terms of cost and being incredibly docile.

@tedmyers8005 6 лет назад
Jackson Emick I agree with scarlet-electro. Don't take advice from Jungle Bob, and don't purchase Ts from online dealers that are centered around reptiles (the exception being NERD), because they generally only care about the money and don't know and don't care to know about the T they send you. That being said, Tom Moran is who I would go to, although Jon3800 is a fine person to refer to as well. Tom has a brilliant video titled, The Best Beginner Tarantulas. Any one in that video would make a good beginner T. Hope this helps :)

@JaguarDieCast 10 лет назад
Rose hairs are extremely docile. But just like people every single one has its own personality. I've never been bitten or have seen my rose hair kick hair. Good choice with a rose hair for your first T. Cheap, readily available at pet shops, and very docile. If you want to get into the hobby I suggest a Honduran Curly Hair next. Also a very docile species and relatively cheap. After that a Pink Toe is also a good choice.
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 9 лет назад
They have a reputation for being docile, but not all are. In fact, many keepers report having "psycho rosies" that are quite unpredictable and sometimes aggressive. As a New World species, they will kick urticating hairs (irritating hairs on their abdomens that are meant to cause discomfort), however, they are also capable of biting. Although their venom is not particularly potent, the punctures from 3/8" fangs could sure hurt. B. albopilosum (Honduran Curly Hair) has a better rep for being a gentle, predictable T.

I have a Rose Hair. I pick her up from her cage using the inner side of a small, round stone cave, cause I´m too terrified to pick her up with my hands. But if I try to get her to walk into my hand, she avoids it and backs off into the cave. I´m afraid she´s gonna bite or something if I push her more to walk into my hand. Is that possible? She´s never been aggressive, and I´ve held her twice before, but it´s been a while. What to do?

How do i get of my fear of them?
@MorteGlory
@MorteGlory 6 лет назад
Jarno Datema I know many people that got over their fears by actually buying a tarantula(a more docile one like a curly hair or rose hair) and took care of it. I personally never had a fear so after I bought mine, i would let my friends see them or even handle them. That, plus the knowledge that their venom wasn't deadly unless you're allergic, and they didn't want to bite humans anyways, helped them get over their fear after a while.

Dakota Stils Actually, i own one for a couple of years now, but i am still afraid to pick him/her up
@MorteGlory
@MorteGlory 6 лет назад
Jarno Datema i wouldn't. I don't handle mine just because they get nothing from it except danger and the potential injury to either me or the T. Granted, mine are slings, and I have a heteroscodra maculata, a very fast old world aggressive species so I'm not handling them anyways. Just remember, if you do handle them, be very careful, test their temperament first, and coax onto your hand, never forcefully pick them up

Is the palomino blonde also called the desert blonde tarantula?
@courtneysroad
@courtneysroad 7 лет назад
(In case you haven't had a reply yet) As far as I know, yes. I've never personally heard them called 'palomino' blondes before, but I don't think the desert blonde has a doppelganger. I was a little confused when he said palomino because my first thought was 'Hey! That looks just like my tarantula Tequila!'

Is it true that they won't bite unless provoked?
@MorteGlory
@MorteGlory 6 лет назад
turbokid991 generally. A tarantula will bite if it believes what it is biting is trying to harm it, or it is prey. Sometimes it mistakes you for a predator and attacks as a defense, or mistakes your finger or something as prey (though that rarely happens.) When a tarantula is stressed they're more likely to bite, so the important thing is to test their temperament before attempting to touch them or do anything inside their cage with your hand

The only requirements for me is that it's needs to be able to live in a 10 gallon tank and doesn't/rarely bites for throws hair at you basically that most likely WONT attack people because if it does it's gonna be a serious pain to have someone watch the house (I travel a lot)

The way he was moving the tarantula around and manipulating it so much made me cringe, that is NOT a safe way to handle them. I would never handle my tarantulas, and if I ever did, I would not use any techniques from this video. I encourage you to take these videos down and upload new ones with more current, safer advice. I'm not trying to hate on this dude or anything, he seems like a great guy but a lot of the info in here is very outdated. Please do your own research.

Please don’t recommend handling tarantulas ☹️ I‘m in the hobby for quite a while and own various species, but I would never handle them. They see us as threatening and it’s a matter of seconds that you can get bitten. They’re not domesticated pets!
