@davidbaxter5132 very true. If I didn't enjoy the videos, I would just go to bed. Instead, I make my wife watch me prop my eyelids up with sticks and slump over slowly.
Hi Mike I just want to thank you for your videos. I suffered a brain injury last year and there was not much I could watch and enjoy. I am getting better but your videos have been like therapy for me. I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed them and how much they helped me over this past year.
@@MikeHolton thanks Mike, I really appreciate that you replied. I and so many others love your videos. I'm looking forward to seeing the second turning of this wood too. keep making videos. I wish you all success and have a great day
Oh turning green wood is so much fun! The shavings just curl off. It is gonna be simply gorgeous when you are able to finish it out! What lovely colors in that wood and beautiful grain!❤
@@MikeHolton I'm not a craftsman by any stretch of the imagination, but I love to watch videos like yours - and yours in particular, where people are renovating, making things better ir making something out of nothing.
I love that you saved the shoots! I really hope they survive and flourish. You are making wood for the next generation of woodworkers! The bowl is lovely so far. I hadn't heard of drying a partly turned piece of wood in its own shavings before. I hope it dries well!
What a wonderful surprise to find a second video waiting for me when I got home today. 😊 I can’t wait to see how this looks once dry, it’s got a bit of a tulip vibe going for it now. Should be fun.
Mike, once that has a chance to dry up and you get a second turn on it, I believe it will be a beautiful bowl. I love the unique shape and flaws in the grain.
can't wait until its dry enough to finish turning, you can see the beauty in it now, thanks Mike, very interesting video, i hope the shoots take root. ive planted acorns and started 2 off on their journeys to mighty oaks and 3 conkers are on their way to horse chestnut trees , very satisfying , 'Paul planted, Apollos watered, but Jehovah kept making it grow" 😊
I love seeing the long ribbon shavings from turning wet wood. Nice shape going into the box. Fingers crossed this dries without cracking. I look forward to seeing this finish turned. I also like to weigh a piece before letting it dry. Once it stops losing weight we know the moisture level has reached equilibrium with the shop. Dave.
Mike, l look forward to seeing how this nowl tens out. I have a few pieces of a crab apple tree a neighbor was cutting. Am going yo gepive it a try it would be the first green turning i have to done. Wish me luck.
Watching your videos is partly what made me buy a lathe. It is relaxing and addictive at the same time. My only problem now is what to do with all the creations I've made. My wife had the idea to open a stand at our local growers market and I've had some success selling my items. Thanks for unknowingly being an inspiration.
What a nice chunk of Hazel. As always I feel by following you I am doing an apprenticeship. Something new every time. I really look forward to seeing this take its final form. With that extra sensory benefit of the lovely nutty smell as it dries! Thanks Mike
I don't think I would have thought to try saving the sprouts to to plant out. I hope it works. I'm constantly amazed by turners who can see through weird branches and rot to the possibility of beautiful finished projects! SO interested to see how this one dries and gets finished.
Hi Mike, that was very interesting seeing how you decide if the project needs a single turn or double turn. It will be fascinating to see how long it takes to get the piece ready for completion and how the moisture level changes. Thanks for the video looking forward to the next one.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hi Mike. What a lovely surprise for us, a second video this week 🥰 Cant wait for 2nd turning and see it finished. Such a looooong wait lol Hope the ouch is feeling better 🙃 Have a super rest of the weekend. Oh and please show progress reports on shoots 😋 Thanks
Thanks Fiona, the ouch is getting better, I banged my head on the tool rest! I think we have about a 12 month wait for this one but I'm sure it will be worth it. Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend as well 😃
Good morning Mike. Good timing! I have just used my chainsaw and band saw on some beech trunks and now have a load of blanks ready to be twice turned. I have a wheely bin full of shavings ready to receive them. I have also used my one way coring system on one of the larger pieces. Exciting times, and I still have several hours left on Sherlock Holmes. Another excellent investment. Regards 🌞
Yet another species of wood I’ve yet to turn. It does have some spectacular grain to it. Hope you’re getting settled in well to the new place Mike. Lots of changes for both of us lately old friend. On a cheery note, my new Laguna lathe will arrive any day now. I’ve been working on updating my shop and setting things up like I had always intended..I’m not as energetic or ambitious as I was in my younger days All the best sir. You set the bar high for the rest of us turners.
Thanks so much brother and great to hear from you. We have been a little worried as you had not been around after what happened but glad to hear you are ok. We are all moved in and the new place is way better than we could have hoped for. All the best, Mike
Good job Mike. I accidentally discovered that truing wet Yew branch wood into blanks and sealing the ends stopped any cracking. Now I do that with any wet branch wood I get and it works for them all. I have never had a failure apart from one tiny, hairline, crack in a 30cm Yew blank that was a couple of millimetres deep but I think I may have missed it when turning the piece originally. Best Wishes, Brendan.
That is pretty amazing! I would do more wet turning but it does not really fit in too well with the videos I make. If I was making things to sell I would do a whole lot more 😄
@@MikeHolton From the other comments, I am not alone in wondering about it 😀 If it grows fast enough, maybe in several years you can get another piece from it 😂
