I dream of actual functional shutters, but live in a hurricane prone area. Any ideas what the storm rating is for these shutters?
@scotttovey
@scotttovey 3 года назад
Why would you not use shutters in hurricane prone areas? The shutters are there to protect the windows from flying debris. Here's a bit of practical sense that bureaucrats won't let people use. Anything rated for a hurricane is just as valuable in tornado prone areas. Anything rated for a tornado is just as valuable in hurricane prone areas. Are there differences? Yes; a tornado rating should be able to withstand anything a hurricane can dish out due to the greater pressure that a tornado delivers. If you are concerned about protection from these types of storms; find out what the code is in your area then; exceed it. As far as shutters are concerned; real and functional beats that piece of plastic trim any day.

I thought that you weren't supposed to screw into the mortar but the brick itself? I have heard that it's not good to screw into mortar?
@manillafresh57
@manillafresh57 3 года назад
No, exact opposite. Much easier to patch/replace mortar than it is a brick. You don’t want to drill holes into nice brick.
@benjamincarpenter4376
@benjamincarpenter4376 3 года назад
It varies, you can screw into the mortar or the brick. The advantage of using the mortar is the holes can be patched later, but the disadvantage is mortar doesn't hold up as well as brick, and can vary depending on how well of a job the mason did. Brick will last forever, but patching it would be more difficult.
@Engineer9736
@Engineer9736 3 года назад
@@manillafresh57 It’s not that of a straight forward choice. If you need a good strong connection then putting it into the brick is the way to go. But if you are just putting up decoration then in the cement is the way to go as you say. The way they drilled right on the edge of the brick suprised me, and that it actually worked out. Normally the drill bit skips off the brick a little down into the softer cement after which the position is off.

Bear in mind that I'm NOT a GC., that being said, won't the shutter(s) stay level far less time because the screw isn't screwed into something MORE solid than the morter? Please be nice 😊
@ClicketyClack
@ClicketyClack 3 года назад
It depends on how soft or dried out the mortar is, but as long as you can get most of the screws into solid brick it should be fine. There are also special epoxy mixes you can inject into the hole that are designed to bind to mortar.

@royalvarez6436

@@jenniferbassett3001 , you actually make a good argument in that anchors should be placed into solid structure; however, some brackets do not space properly to affix completely into the solid core. That is where masonry grade anchors for additional support. Remember that you are viewing a thumbnail-sketch of what must have taken substantial time to tweak all of the gaps and issues that presented themselves.
