Jason is a University of Montana Master Certified Beekeeper, who has been keeping bees for almost a decade and enjoys sharing his experiences with the craft of beekeeping. Remember beekeeping is local, our videos outline are what works for us and are not intended to be a prescription for your bee colonies or how to operate your apiary. Although these concepts are generally endorsed by many beekeepers you have to listen, watch, and learn from your bees as well as other resources in the craft of beekeeping.

Even though I didn’t watch every part of the video, I still appreciate that you showed the full harvest process. Most people jump directly to their honey house (or kitchen) with full supers being opened, decapped & spun

Gorgeous! We have 9 colonies (5 were swarms/splits from this year) and we pulled one full super off last week. The bees have to draw the comb first as we are in our second year only and we are working on equipment still! 'Super' happy with what we have gotten so far!

Hello Jason I have enjoyed your video’s for a while now . I also use Maxant equipment an have had very good luck with it all. I started out my bee keeping back around The mid 60’s at that time I had 135 colonies but sold out years later and got back into it a few years ago . I have ten colonies now an probably going to stop at around five more . I think that will be a good number for me . A question your lower wall covering is that galvanized or stainless steel ??.It is so great you an a lot of the great bee keepers are taking the time to do these videos to help out new an younger people with there starting in bee keeping. Keep up the great work. THANKS

Hi Jason, you should think about making a swivel wheeled base and just lag bolt the extractor to it. By having it on a moveable base it will absorb wobble from the unbalanced frames. I also added hinges on mine so I can tilt it forward and drain most of the honey out of the extractor. I'll have to do a video next time I extract some honey. Probably in a week or so. ** Smash the like button everyone **

Great idea. I started a platform last year for it but never finished it. However, I find if you start off slow and build it doesn’t wobble. But just takes a few min longer. Thanks for the support!

Last year I used a bee brush and the temperature was about 40C/104F. This year I made some fume boards and I might get an air blower. I'm done brushing bees off individual frames :)

Hi and thanks for a very informative but still easy video how to harvest the honey from the frames and what equipment you use, I am a beginner for 2 years now with 6 hives and the simplest equipment with a 3 frame sling and the necessary tools used. Will maybe be able to harvest 1-2 frames of honey from each hive this autumn but it is enough for our own needs, maybe there will be little sales of honey in the coming years here in central Sweden out on the coast with lots of meadows & forest glades with nice flowers and some trees that also provide nectar.

Thanks for commenting. It takes a bit of time to build up the necessary equipment to do a larger harvest with ease but there are many great affordable tools you can use as you get started.

Another reason to leave the honey gate open is you don't want the honey to reach the bearing at the bottom of the center rod. There is non-food safe grease in there and you don't want to contaminate your honey. Also, the acidity of the honey will damage the bearing at the bottom. I'd also recommend putting a lid on the extractor. I realize yours was likely off for video purposes, but the air inside the extractor has to go somewhere and it usually funnels up and out of the extractor. The fine wisps of honey will go with it and you will have microscopic pieces of honey EVERYWHERE within a few feet of your extractor if you leave the lid off while spinning.

Very nice set up, hope to get something close to yours in the future , I have a 3 frame extractor and a plastic tote for uncapping, it worked good the first few years but now my hives have out grown my equipment and I hoping to get better stuff.

This is a great video, Jason. I really like the look of your honey house. I have a 20 frame maxant extractor like you. Do you know how long does the leather washer lasts gradually increasing speed like you do? I see you are using as it is designed to be used and i am not. I have always had my extractor strapped to the corner wall and kept the yellow nut all the way tight to minimize slipping and wear on the leather washer, but with my redone honey house i will have to approach extracting like you demonstrated by starting slow and gradually increasing speed with the extractor not bolted or strapped down anymore. thank you for your time.
@BohemiaBees

Thanks for commenting. We haven’t seen as much wear using the slow tighten method. Just takes a bit longer.

You’re using the capping comb incorrectly. You should treat it like a spatula. You slide it under the cappings and lift up.
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees Год назад
Yes when you are harvesting a few frames. It’s a scratcher and like chain uncappers can be used to scratch off the cappings. I’m no expert but there we many ways to do something. Thanks for the perspective though.
