I finally got around to extracting the last of my late summer honey harvest and began the process of separating and drying all my wax cappings. Jake at MAXANT INDUSTRIES was kind enough to offer me a brand new Junior Wax Spinner and I was very excited to try it out. It's a tool I never thought I'd need, but after using it just once, I knew it would be one of my favorite tools ever. I love tools that just WORK. This thing works! Part 2 of this video will show you how I process and clean my beeswax.

We ended the year with just about 400lbs of honey and I am going to try to figure out how to offer it for sale to you guys. Please stay tuned. Once I get the logistics worked out, I will announce it in a video.

im surprised that that maxant cappings extract doesnt have an interchangeable drum for spinning frames would give maxant more options to sell accessories!

Just a perforated metal cage or something the same size as a super frame would work. dump cappings in it, throw them in the honey extractor after you finish up with the frames. More of a pain to clean out then the big drum, but if it saves you the cost of another machine. Probably perfect for the medium-small size operation market where someone could justify an extractor for the frames, but not a 2nd capping extractor.
@patb2010
@patb2010 4 года назад
We use a couple of heavy nylon mesh baskets that hook into the slots where the frames would go in the extractor. Fill them with cappings, make sure the extractor is balanced and give them a spin. This system works well for us hobbyists. Here’s an example: www.trademe.co.nz/business-farming-industry/farming-forestry/beekeeping/auction-2421701905.htm

Try an uncapping roller. They look like a small paint roller with spikes all over it. You will save all the effort of cleaning the wax. It is faster than a hot knife and you can roll the caps directly over the centrifuge. I used an electric hot knife for decades and thought the roller was a gimmick until someone bought me one. What a surprise it was, I don't think I will ever go back.

Hey Jim looking good brother! to utilise the wax you can buy an embosser and make your own wax foundations. If you can keep the white virgin comb wax separate it’s worth a lot for making cosmetics, yellow wax sells for around $30-$40 per kg the cosmetic grade can fetch 5x that

Would be good to have a removable frame spinner that you can switch with a small wax extractor drum, so the small scale bee keeper can use it for first extracting, and then spinning out the capping.

Hey Jim, great job that’s a lot of extra honey to spin out of the wax clippings! I would love to just taste a little of your honey. You’ve really came a long way with your apiary. I’m so jealous over your bee pond or watering hole that you made with the big bolder! You could sell your honey and wax on Etsy or eBay. I’m a hobby beekeeper with 4 hives at this time and I’ve personally bought wax on eBay when I first began to re-coat some plastic foundations. Keep up the good work and I hope all of your hive make it this winter!

I have 4 bottles of various types of honey in my cabinet that I got from the local farmers market, but there is always room for more honey in my life!!! I would say the first thing you'll need to decide is size of container, shipping costs can become prohibitive if the size of the honey container doesn't fit in the Priority small or medium flat rate box. 8 dollars roughly for the small and a little over 14 for the medium. Using the priority flat rate gives you better overall prices on shipping instead of having random boxes and having to calculate weight and distance ect. for each individual customer. (trust me, I ended up losing my shirt doing ebay without using priority flat rate boxes) Go to the post office, pick up a small and a medium flat rate box, they are free. Get a couple prototypes of the sizes of containers you are thinking of shipping the honey in, wrap it in bubble wrap and see what fits in what size box. Also at some point you need to do a test run. If you're using a glass jar, you need to bubble wrap it a lot and make sure there is no shifting in the box. Mail a container to a friend that isn't local, so the box can have the whole experience of cross country travel and multiple distribution points, where it goes by plane, truck, and carrier. Then have the friend report on the condition of the box and its contents. Trial runs and testing boxes and honey containers on a small scale before ramping up to a bigger sale can really help you minimize stress and make sure none of the honey or your money gets wasted. All that said, Sign me UP! when you do start selling, I'll be first in line. :D

Hey Jim.... first off... super jealous about the gifted cappings spinner, but your video has just solidified my decision on getting one, so Jake wins..haha. Second, I just wanted to make a point to swing by and let you know how awesome it is to see your ideas and influence being used across the beekeeping community. I see people posting pics about prepping their hives for winter, with the exact same set up you use. When I say exact, I mean down to the corrugated awning you use on top your hives, Vivaldi boards with burlap, corrugated wraps, insulted wrap and straps with corrugated corner protectors underneath...haha. They might not give you credit in their post.... but I know where they are getting those ideas. You’re doing great things, and I look forward to continuing to watch your influence and channel grow! Happy thanksgiving!

Ha ha... I got so much crap for my winter setup the first year. Then I started having success! I make no claims that I invented anything... I just saw bits and pieces from other beekeepers and came up with my FrankenSystem. I see pictures here and there and I'm happy people are trying! So many people my first year just said "Bees living in trees don't need foam insulation!" When I hear people say they have 50-60% losses over winter and that they didn't even try to insulate it makes me sad. This stuff isn't hard to do, it just takes a little time and effort. Thanks for watching and writing! If you see more photos like you described, @ tag me so I can see it!

In my experience with the wax that I've rended... it worked great for coating my flow frames to encourage my bees to use them. While in a liquid state, I dipped a basting brush into the wax and "painted" each downward-facing side with the wax to keep the wax from dripping deep into the cells. Then, I put just a light coating of honey over the wax. The result was a bunch of bees "fixing" and using the frames as if they were extracted wax frames that were returned to them. You could also make foundations for frames if you can obtain, or make a mold. I don't think it would matter too much weather the foundations were smooth, or for the lack of a better term... studded in the shape of comb. I would think they'd build on it one way or the other.

I was able to make room for 10 in my freezer, but that's it, Last year I put some in sealed plastic bins in the outdoor shed for the winter, but they got moldy, no doubt from freezing and thawing with no air movement.

you could do a website with preordering the honey that way you have a heads up on how many people want to buy your honey and you can set a cap on how many can purchase so you don't oversell and if you undersell you can sell the left overs to a local supplier or something.
@vinofarm

The plan is to bottle everything we have and count the bottles. We'll know exactly how many we can sell before we offer anything. Our big hurdle is figuring out where we can legally ship raw honey. I have some people I'm going to be contacting to figure all that out. I have a feeling it will all be sold very quickly! I just want viewers to have first dibs.

Do the wax combs filled with honey help to insulate the hives and preserve the bee heat in the winter? And, does honey freeze or can they get their nutrients and necessary moisture from the honey in deep winter.
