My method for harvesting Sago Palm Pups. I get about a 50-75% success rate. I know that other methods ask you to dry the freshly cut pups out for a week or so in order to prevent rotting and to cure the wound, but if you cut them away carefully and are able to preserve the tap root, then curing them doesn't help you in the end. Sure, if you chop them off leaving an exposed wound that has a surface area that exceeds more than 25-33% of the pup itself AND you have no tap root, then curing them is highly recommended. If you are uncertain, try both methods to see which works best for you. I hope you enjoy!
I just cut twenty pups off our 7 year old potted female, No wonder she won't put out new leaves. We really on;ly want these two to look nice, any advice for leaf production?
I just cut so many pups off not realizing that I could replant them :( I still have them. I did it yesterday but I kind of cut into to the top of them so the top of the pups are cut into about 3/4 of a inch so I am seeing the white inside. Is it still possible that leaves would sprout out the top? Will it reform a brown coat over the top where leafs sprout?
Will the same apply for a sago growing from seed that has a tap root. It’s growing indoors in the sitting room with a open fireplace and access to eastern sunny exposure for Ireland any way 😊
@@future3325 I'm not that well versed but Alexa says not all Gymnosperms are hermaphroditic and sago palms are male or female. I have 6 Sago Palms. Four are female and 2 are male. The males never produce the orange seeds. The females never produce a cone.
I have one giant sago palm in my garden for more than 3 years and i just learned today that i can harvest its babies lol brb gonna grab a knife and pluck them babies off
Thank you so much!!!!! We have a beautiful sago palm and we're relocating! I'm so sad, I havest the pups today. I feel like I'm taking a part from the home with me! It means a lot! Thanks again
A couple weeks ago I was given 2 pups that had small tap roots and sprigs that hadn't opened up into leaves yet. I potted them following your instructions mostly and in less than 2 weeks the sprigs have mostly unfolded and are turning into beautiful leaves.
Well I was talking to my neighbor a couple days ago about my experience with the 2 pups I mentioned earlier. She has 3 sagos in her front yard and wanted me to pull the pups she had. I ended up with 18 more
The major 2021 February winter storm in Texas took out my smaller sago palm, and I thought the larger one (21 years old) was history as well. Surprisingly, and thankfully, it started sprouting pups. Thanks for sharing how to save, plant, and care for them!
My favorite plant of all time. I miss all 27 I had in California. Some were probably worth thousands. Couldn't grow them in Idaho so didn't have any. Now that I'm in Texas I need to buy a bunch. Great video and hopefully yours all do well. Nice shovel by the way.
Maybe you can go on craigslist and see if there is someone who is willing to give you some pups. Or you can look on freecycle, offer up, etc. Maybe neighbors, work colleagues, etc. Get them for free. I just dug up a young Sago Palm (hard work) but it was free.
Hi from the UK Eastern England .We have a container sago with five pups ,not only does it like weather it has put out another head of eight leaves this year So you should be ok? Its in the winter green house for the winter now.
@@paulmarkham4479 You're impressing me greatly, Paul. I'm based in Oxfordshire and just got my first Sago Palm but it will have to be a houseplant for now as I am currently in an apartment. Spent yesterday in the greenhouses at Kew Gardens which was amazing (we go most years).
Some of my neighbors have these... planted when the houses were built in 1990, and still only 3-5’ tall trunk. Love their small size! Like a mini palm! ✨
I am very happy I watch this video since my sago plants have this pups and I had no idea what it was , I was ready to removed them thank you for the advised mi sego is like seven o more years old and first time it has pups maybe because I removed it from small pot I am very very happy that I will have more thanks sooooo muuuuch
A customer of mine has some 5 year old that were bigger than the ones my wife had that were almost double in age. He told us to drive a pipe in the ground near her palms and pour in liquid iron or put old nails or railroad spikes at the base. We tried it and it actually helped them really take off.
I just bought one this size from a company in North Carolina for 10 dollars with 4 dollars shipping. They have really good reviews so hope everything goes well for me.
You should give us an update on how these are doing! Great tips! I bought a few a year ago and one of the got really infested with pests and all the leafs fell off, so we thought it died, I was literally about to throw it away when I saw it had a small sprout, took all the dirt off and saw it still had mealy bugs so i washed them off, and cut the pups off. one of them sprouted last week, the other two are still holding on.
Sago has always been my favorite. I love the sturdiness, simplicity, and symmetry. I see them as sacred geometry, of sorts. I'm looking at a male sago palm right now, with its sweet-smelling cone atop its gorgeous green foliage. I just separated a huge pup from its base. It reminds me of an alien egg, as seen in movies!
Thank you for the video! I’m trying to harvest for the first time today. My electrical company removed my huge female sago palm - she was about 20 yrs old- or older(house is 20yrs old) since it sat In front of a clamshell- it was all about control- the palm was not a problem all these other years. It really upset yo kill a perfectly good palm. I only had 18ht notice it was being removed so I had no time to dig another hole or get a pot and plant it etc
I got 11 male pups locally 1 week ago... hope they grow! Before the pups, I also got 10 seedlings via eBay... but I already sold them off (because seedlings are unknown sex until 15+ year old... I didn't want female sagos) Oh, btw... having pups doesn't determine if it's a male or female sago (they both produce pups!). Only its' flower/seeds or male-cone determines that; which is only given on very mature sagos (15+ years old).
I have about 3 babies that I removed from momma but none of them have roots nor the tap root. I potted all three in miracle grow soil and have been watering them, making sure they do not dry out. I did this 2/3 weeks ago and so far they are thriving under mornings shade me sun the rest of the day. I am in zone 9b. Hopefully they will keep going.
Rob Backyard Gardenerr aww thanks unfortunately I have to work as a hospice nurse the sick doesn't get days off they need us. But thanks for all ur wonderful videos...funny but I'm a 70's baby well yea I'm still young
You are a great person for taking care of others. Just be sure you save some time for yourself! I'm also a 70's baby - we aren't spring chickens anymore but we still get it done - LOL. Have a great weekend!
Thanks broh. I just got 2 decent sized ones from my dads friend i'm getting ready to plant in my front yard, one of them's about 3 ft tall, and the other ones about 2.5ft tall but it's a twin theres two growing off the same root system, and then i got about 10 pups that are about a foot tall with roots the size of a large soft ball with long floppy roots coming off, i'm getting some soil in a bit and i'm gonna plant them this afternoon and make sure my irrigation drip system is set up for them. thanks for the info brohamilton.
This guy had like atleast 40 of them in his yard, some of them were damn near 5 ft tall trunk only, but those would have been way too hard to take, he said i can have as many as i want, he's selling the house and leaving the country haha.
Been searching for someone to explain thoroughly, thank you! I pulled two 3-4 years old sago plants. Found 4 what do you call them? Seeds or pups, no roots or stems. Giving this a try.
2 month update on the 2 pups. Planted them in my backyard garden and the are doing well. Leafs are still green, not discolored or dried. And I dis pull out a pup but it was a large softball size one and it has sprouted 3 new leafs that are 1 inch long.
So much info, thank you !!...i have two sago, they are doing great....but I just killed my second robellini ....apparently there’s more to be done than just digging a hole....plz help !!!....I live in Texas also, Mission,Tx
I have a male and he pups also . Males have will put out a large pinecones looking thing and females do not tbe creat pods all around the crown waiting to be pollinated.
Hi Rob! I love your channel! You inspire me to start gardening with each and every video you produce. I was wondering what the name of the palm tree just to the left of the Sago Palm your harvesting from? Timestamp: 0:17
Give them a bath of fungicide, especially if you cut to the quick. Drying serves same purpose, but they grow faster. Several dumps of like neem oil keep them vital.
Thanks for this video! I live in Dubai and my sago plant has the edges of its leaves browning slightly. It still looks pretty healthy but I was wondering what you would suggest to keep them green throughout? Thanks again!
Well my first thought is how much water is it getting? They are pretty drought tolerant but they do need some water. Also humidity could be a problem, as you live in Dubai it is very dry, in that case there is no solution, just let it grow. But if it’s not getting enough water then it’s an easy fix. Also make sure to fertilize it at LEAST once a year.
I have two giant cycads in my front yard that are close to 20 years old. I don't get why they are worth so much. They are literally everywhere in my part of the country. And once they get really big they lose their landscaping appeal imho. Each one probably has more than a dozen pups that I have never bothered to dig out, I just keep them clipped and shudder at the thought of having any more than the two I already have. They draw blood every time I trim them. Plus, every part of the plant is poisonous to animals. It is definitely a love hate relationship.
Wish we could upload pics on here. I just got a baby Sago two weeks ago and not sure what to do. It’s smaller than what was shown in ⬆️ clip. I had it inside, not by a window for nearly two weeks. Totally healthy looking, watering every few days. Then I put it outside on the porch in our TX sun for a day, bc that’s what It said to do online. Full sun. The next day, half of it’s little branches were light green, no longer dark. I brought it inside in the windowsill, still hasn’t changed back. Not sure what to do. Since it’s a baby, do I put it outside for few hours of sun everyday then bring it back in? I’m guessing so, but sounds like a lot of work. And since the sun obviously affected it, how can I repair the damage?
I heard that technically they are not palms, they are part of the gingko family along with conifers, they just happen to look like palms. Do not try to irrigate them with the air conditioner condenser runoff, I directed the a/c runoff tube to my huge Sago palm and killed it, I guess they don’t like cold water!
So I thought we lost our Sago palms in the February freeze, but pups are now sprouting, even though all the dead leaves have been removed (cut) from the mother and she has no signs of new growth herself. Should I remove the pups? Remove the mother? Just leave it all and see what happens? I’m in central Texas. Thanks!
I just bought a Sago Palm at Lowes in SC. Since they can live outside in the south, can I keep mine on the patio in WV until cool temps. set in? I can wrap a towel around the pot so it won't get the roots too hot.
Thanks for the video, very informative. We have several females and numerous pups between them, some are getting pretty large. We're in SoCal with the weather getting a bit chilly. Can we harvest the pups now or are they destined to fail? Also, would using "steer manure organic compost" for the "10% compost" be okay?
A little late to answer, but let them dry for 3-4 days in open air and then just stick them in the ground. Or in a planter with regular soil from your veggie bed. I SoCal they grow like weeds.
I have a huge sago with many pups around it. I didn't know what they were because I'm no gardener. One pup is really big. Can I still cut it away from the main sago? I would love to plant it elsewhere. I've become a slightly better gardener since I first bought my sago
Sykes has been in my garden for more than 13 years, it appears well, but in the last two years the leaves grow once a year and this year the leaves did not grow fully. Please help
You can absolutely grow them in Las Vegas. They are actually pretty drought tolerant, but I would still make sure they get some water when they are young. I would just say plant it in a spot with at least 6 hours of light a day (they can take full sun easily) they are slow growing but make sure it is in a space where it can grow and not be disturbed by other plants and buildings. Also I would put it out when it is acclimated to the sun, so put it in the spot you want to plant it in for a couple of weeks then you can plant it.
I have been looking to purchase a pup to start. The people selling them cut do not show the pup and have it already potted. I have even seen some that show the pups for purchase but they look badly cut to me. Can you recommend a seller or company that may be doing it right :)
I have a different cind of palm, but same thing I had to do: harvest pups. I don't know really what cind of palm is the one I have put I got pups from them and they rotted and my palm is half dry now and is almost dead :( I took plant out and I removed rotted part and I saw a roots there: 2 big fat roots covered with rotted peace of palm. Now what should I do? Should I keep it out to dry for few days, plant it in soil or put in water til roots are bigger and plant stronger? Please help. Thanks.
Question. I live in Florida. I recently had an Asian white scale issue where I had to cut off every single frond. Will it flush again before next spring? It’s almost September now and I cut them all off the beginning of August.
Question! I'm approaching winter (northwest fl) and I want to keep the ones I'm working on in the garage. How much sun do they need to make it okay in there?
Does it have to be a pup from the bottom? I have a little sago palm thats only a little guy probably a 6" trunk no pups near the bottom but could i just chop a leaf off and use that? I just wanna make my buddy a palm tree
I cut three pups from main plant without roots, they are quite small, with one pair or leaves 2 inches max. I pot them some days ago and now thery are turn yellowish, how can i save them?
Wait can these grow on the Pacific Northwest were it rains a lot every winter because here were I’m at I’m in zone 8b but it seems yours is outdoors so can these grow outdoors ?
I'm in North Florida. Will your recommendations work just as well in my area? Do you have any further resources/books/videos, etc. that I could reference?
I'm growing a sago Palm seed and i'm trying to get more information on the growing process of the seedlings and what to do while it's growing? Any information about the sago gemination process would be a great help 😄😊👍 sincerely Robert Stoker of Ireland 🇮🇪
