Good to know! I had a GORGEOUS dahlia that I had to leave when I moved over 3000 miles away. I wish I knew this 7 months ago! I could have brought a little baby with me.

I have to admit I’ve never been a dahlia fan, even though when I was little a neighbor grew prize winning ones. I have a small garden and thought I can’t grow something that doesn’t do a pollinating job too. And lo and behold, after watching today I looked up and found…open-centered dahlias and they do a great job of feeding the pollinators! I guess I didn’t even know these open center types were even dahlias at all! Now I read they are bee and butterfly magnets. Now I must have some! Thank you for sending me in an entirely new garden direction!!!

Just when I thought I knew all there is to know about growing dahlias, here comes your video with more valuable tips. I had no idea that you can propagate them by taking cuttings of the young stems. For the lack of indoor space, I keep the tubers in the garage, inside a paper bag filled with peat moss until middle of May, after the last frost. I plant them directly into the ground. I've been planting them deep enough to cover the entire tuber, including the eyes. They always managed to push through the soil within a week once I started watering them.

Thank you for posting this video now! I really need that information on planting Dahlias. I’ve read that Dahlias can be planted after the last frost date, which is by March in San Diego (I suspect I live a little south and west of you). However, we had a frost warning just last week and nighttime temperatures are predicted to be bouncing around anywhere from 42°-48° over the next 2 weeks. We also have had a lot of rain lately, so I was too worried about planting the tubers and having them rot or freeze. After watching your video, I have decided to pot up the 9 tubers I have so I can at least get them started. Thanks for that idea!

Wow it worked!!! I'm SO pumped over this LOL!! Hey may I ask how deep do I plant the dahlia bulbs? When you plant just the bulbs direct in the ground they're fairly deep. Now you're doing it when they're already sprouted. Do you plant the bulbs just under the surface or so that a small amount of the green is above the ground? Thx for an answer AND, once again, this video👍👏

Planted my Bora Bora's today following the package directions, came back in for a break and watched a couple of your Dahlia vids. Went back out, snipped off the dangly bits and spindly root looking things, and brought them about 2" back towards the surface because they had sprouted a bit and I didn't want to bury that like I'd thought they needed to be. Unfortunately, in the package, the sprouts had spun around about 180* from the eye, so I had to put them eye-down, but I figure at the point they sprouted, that sprout was the important part. at least one of them I'm pretty sure has a second sprout popping up, so I'll wait a couple weeks and see. I'm *notorious* for killing things - largely for watering too little - so while these tubers are taking root, I'm good. After that I'll have to make sure I keep them watered with everything else. Especially here in AZ :) I don't have a drip irrigation system, what's your opinion on the drip sets that look like I.V. bags? Any good? Decent for some plants, not so good for others?

Love my Dahlias! Would you plant them the same in a bed? Directions have said in the past, bury 4". Also, The first and second year, they all came up great after our winter. Last year, one. I didnt dig them up. Should I dig them up every year? I did that last year and that's when none except the one came up. I got the info on how to store them and followed those instructions to the T. My friend grows (farms about 1/2 an acre) in Zone 6 so she needed to do so. I dont know why they didnt come up. I did speak to an expert at a flower show and said to plant them on Mother's Day.

No... I learned in zone 8 from an elderly gentleman that ruled for decades with Best in Show & tons of 1st place ribbons at fair Every year & he didn't do ANY of the stuff he just showed. He dug & divided tubers by end of November after the first frost. Stored tubers in a plastic bag 6" underground in their growing location by their stake that had their name on it. Then in late March - early April he dug them up, planted the best 2-3 tubers horizontally, bud nodes up, 4" underground with a shovel of compost in the hole 1st. PERIOD. Then went on to grow the most majestic, prize winning dahlias You ever saw!!! None of the stuff this man just did. I am curious why he is doing all that unnecessary stuff in a warm climate... I get it with taking cuttings which Mr Noteboom never did. Normally You get several plants to give away from every tuber every yr so not sure why cuttings are necessary?? But obviously an option which is ok to know about... I'm kinda confused about this program.
