As a beginning producer, is compression of this type meant to be used on individual channels? the master?

Good question! You can use it for either! The example talked about would be compressing multiple elements and instruments together (the whole drum kit), but the same concept applies to individual tracks! For master bus compression, be very careful! Turn the ratio down to 2:1 or lower and make sure the attack is long and release is short! Too much there will squash the life out of your mix!

Compression is hard to 'hear', bc what it does is not so much something we can evaluate with our conscious minds, and the reason is the effect it has targets emotion and feel, which are in the domain of the unconscious mind. Oh, we can hear it consciously if we train ourselves in how to listen, which is I think what you're getting at. Why do we close our eyes? We do that bc it takes the conscious evaluation mostly out of the equation, and our conscious mind steps aside and gets out of the way, and what we feel becomes what we evaluate, using our unconscious minds.

Often times engineers over mix/analyze. The consumer and the artists would probably like their music better without all of the cleansing 😂… People love my music RAW! Not even mastered or professionally mixed. Young beat makers/rappers, trust your ears and heart. Play it in your car, eat pods… If it feels good, leave it alone and release it.
