I appreciate how simply and thoroughly you went through this. I really loved the quote. It encompasses what it means to truly help. Something I have endeavoured to teach my children right from the start. "helping isn't doing what YOU want to do for someone else, it's doing what THEY need you to do with compassion and without complaint."
@RealOrganized

Absolutely! I love YOUR quote! In our eagerness to help, too often we end up sabotaging our efforts because of our own experiences, judgement, or prejudice. It takes practice to put yourself in the passenger seat for a little bit, and just look and listen. Thanks for watching and thanks for your thoughtful comment. :)

So often, decluttering has to do with so much more than just the stuff you're getting rid of. We hope you found some helpful tips here. We also did a video in the same series about how to declutter when there's just too much stuff, which you might find useful. All the best on your journey and please let us know if you have any specific questions or problems we can help you out with.

It infuriates me that people think hoarders are bad people. Most hoarders know what the problem is and all they need is a helping hand. Don't force them to get rid of their things, give them an alternative to keeping the things. And another thing, don't expect them to do it themselves, help them do it. Don't be a dictator!
@RealOrganized
@RealOrganized 3 года назад
Absolutely! Great points. Do you have personal experience with hoarding or helping someone with hoarding tendencies?
@lorihilton3146
@lorihilton3146 3 года назад
@@RealOrganized Yes. I've struggled for the past 10 years with hoarding. Initially, it was animals, then after my parents passed away, it was the need to hold on to their possessions. I am disabled, I have sciatica, so bending, lifting, even walking is difficult. I have resorted to paying people to help me. The worst part is that people think I want a life like this, which is simply not true. Chronic depression, ocd and ptsd add to the difficulties of hoarding. For as long as I can remember I have hated when people tell me what to do. I refuse to say that hoarding is a mental health disease, it is a symptom.

Thanks for sharing, Lori. That sounds like a lot to carry. I must admit, I had to look up sciatica (English is not our first language) and that sounds like a very difficult ailment to deal with on top of everything else. Sending you all the best vibes and well wishes from Denmark.

I had to leave home at an early age with no guidance due to personal family issues.. I moved from place to place, worked two jobs, and for the most part kept most of my things in my storage unit, my car and my backpack. It was extremely difficult being on my own for such a long time and I hadn’t realized since I was ALWAYS moving and not knowing “Do I have enough clothes ? Will I have a washer available? I need to keep hygienic products readily available in my backpack. Will I be safe in the winter time?” I began hoarding all my things to feel like I own a lot. I have things to call mine. Even though I didn’t really have a home of my own......

Someone please pray for me. I have hoarded so much over the years, I’m trying to let go of my things so I can live happily in my new home. Though it’s still not permanent, I need to clean up.. 🙁 its just too much..

Thank you so much for sharing your story Amanda. It’s so easy to forget that there can be a lot of emotional baggage behind the physical things that we hold on to. Thanks for the reminder. You’ll be in our prayers. Please let us know if you have any specific topics you’d like us to cover in future videos.

I loved the sentence "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care". Also, correcting body language and NOT using negative language to refer to their things. That helped me greatly and seemed to really build trust.

Thank you so much. With the coronavirus going on my mom has been trying to clean our whole house but has only been making it worse. She does cleans part of the room and then leaves a mess and then moves onto another room. It has gotten to a point where you can’t go into a room without out seeing “junk”. I would really appreciate an answer. Thank you once again

Thank you so much. I think it's great that she is trying. That is really something to commend her for. If you are asking for advice for how to get her to "finish" the project then maybe go with her into one of the rooms and compliment her on all that she has accomplished and ask her some of the questions we talk about in the video about specific items that are left. What is important is that you try to put yourself in her shoes and show love and understanding for her journey. Is that what you were looking for?

How do I get my husband to accept help. He’s got pretty severe ptsd from many losses close together. I want to help him clear space as he falls. He gets extremely uncomfortable with my trying to do it myself.
@RealOrganized
@RealOrganized 3 года назад
It can be so hard when someone you love doesn't want help. You can't force it, but you can try to understand the underlying issues. Maybe he doesn't like to feel like a chastity case or maybe he needs the empowering feeling that comes from getting it done himself (even if he doesn't get I done very often). If his issue started with loss, is he attached to the items or the memories they hold? Maybe there is a better way to honor those memories. Thanks for watching and your husband is lucky to have a wife that cares so much. :)

My fiance and her brother are literally burying themselves under all the stuff... It's become a fire hazard as well as a health hazard. We have a 4 year old boy. And her elderly mother is staying with us... Please... I need help. I'm concerned for my own as well as the rest of the households safety and health.

All of this is wrong. As someone who struggles with hoarding and has had to bring in help to correct the problem, everything you are saying is wrong. If I say that I want my dining room table clean so I can eat there I AM ADMITTING TO YOU that I know there is a deficit between where it is now and where I want it to be so you stupidly asking how my vision differs from the current reality is being patronizing because I have already said this in my own way. You stating that you are concerned about my safety would seriously piss me off. I already KNOWWWWW that EMS can’t get in if something happened. That is one of EVERY hoarders biggest fears, they don’t need you to behave like captain obvious!! You guys clearly don’t understand hoarding and should absolutely not be giving advice on how to fix it.
