What problems have you had lifting someone off the floor?
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 4 года назад
Yes, that can be a problem but that's when you need to use equipment or tools to help - or another person. If the person you are lifting can assist you in any way, something like the ResQUP Easy To Use Senior Lift on Amazon may be useful. It basically helps you to get up from the floor, bit by bit until you can get on up to a chair. - amzn.to/3cxxQ9Q You can also look at the IndeeLift from MedMart which can help you with someone who may not be able to assist you in getting them up off the floor. - bit.ly/2Lrwa5K Note: I am an affiliate with these companies so I may earn a small income if you purchase these items.

My patient fell on the dry pool deck, wearing shorts. I ran for a thick large towel so that bare knees wouldn't get scraped on the textured cement. All the videos I have seen for this, the "victim" is already lying on a mat/rug.
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 4 года назад
I'll have to check but I do believe that in our video we do talk about putting a towel or some type of cloth material under the person's knees if they are on a wooden or concrete type of floor. Anything that might scrape or cut their skin. Yes, I see that comment at 6:44 on the video. Perhaps if we do an updated version of this technique we'll put that comment closer to the beginning of the video. I do hope your patient did not suffer any serious injury from his/her fall.

What if they don't have the power to stand up or to get up to sit in the chair. The type of old people who can barely stand for seconds with assistance . These who have very weak legs that they rarely can hold them up.
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 3 года назад
In a case like that, the first thing we recommend is calling 9-1-1 emergency services when the person has fallen. The medics/first responders are trained in getting people up off the floor, plus they can assess the fallen person to be sure they aren't injured. An alternative is purchasing a lifting chair or emergency lifting cushions to get the person up off the floor. Another option is a Hoyer lift. If these are used, the person still must be watched for signs of injury (they don't always tell you if they are in pain and some may not be aware or able to tell you if they are injured, especially if they have cognitive impairments (ie: Alzheimer's, etc).

I'm so sorry your mom fell, but so happy our video could help! Even if she doesn't seem to have any injuries, please take her to the doctor to check her out or watch her over the next few days in case something flares up. My dad fell, but didn't tell me (he didn't live with me) and it turned out that he had broken a finger and pulled muscles in his back (which I discovered when I visited him. He didn't complain because he didn't want to bother me). Best of luck to you and your mom! :)

Just found this video, such great and helpful advice. My father has fallen 3 times now (mostly recently last night) and each time we have lifted him through a combination of brute force and strength. This method looks so much easier and importantly gives him back some dignity and responsibility for getting up off the floor. Thank you.

Hello! I just want to say thank you so much for sharing! I have 3 loved ones close to me who elderly. Now I know what to do if they need help getting up off the floor. My uncle was helping me carry my groceries up to my apartment even though i asked him to just leave the bags at the bottom of the steps, and fell at the top of the stairs. Luckily he was ok, and he was able to get up on his own. And thankfully he wasn't hurt.

My mom cannot walk so I modified by using her commode chair on its lowest setting. I was happy that we could get her on her knees then she put one leg forward and pushed herself onto the commode. I was then able to transfer her yo her wheelchair. I cannot thank you both enough for this video.

@@SeniorSafetyAdvice Thank God the fall wasn't a big one and she's doing fine, just one of her toes and arm got a little bruised. I will check her daily and if something is not right I will call her doctor right away. The biggest problem is that they think they can do everything as they use to. The "I can do it all" mentality and she doesn't like to ask for help. My mom is going to be 93 in July 20 and I take care of her. Is a difficult job and a stressful one but I'm happy to do it. Thank you again for taking the time to do these helpful videos. Thank you again!

I'm so glad your mom seems to be fine. Falls are so scary! Yes - you are right about elders thinking they can do everything they used to. My dad used to climb the hill behind their house to weed it - at age 94. I would beg him not to, but he did it anyway (and fell a couple of times). I understand wanting to be independent, but it is definitely rough on the caregiver. It is not easy to take care of our parents, but it is well worth the stress and worry. Best wishes to you both!

I am 75 and by myself. The other day my office chair broke and I fell on the floor with no one to help me. So I butt-scooted on the floor and out the patio door where there were some steps and a railing. The steps made it so my legs were lower than the rest of me and I was able to get up by myself by holding onto the railing. Worked great and easy on the knees. What you are doing here in the video is hard to do for older people.
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice Месяц назад
Thank you so much for the comment. Yes, what we show can be harder for some older folks, I agree. It all depends. I've used this technique many times with older adults and for most it works well, for others no. What you did was very smart but what if you had fallen and were unable to "butt scoot". If you had broken a hip it would have been very difficult to do that. At least very painful. There are so many factors involved in anything like this. The physical abilities of the person, the place where they fell (indoor, outdoor, on floor, carpet, grass, etc.), what is around them (furniture, railings, etc.) and of course cognition. Are they aware enough to help themselves? That's why I always recommend voice activated devices like Alexa or Google Home to use in case of an accident. It's just better to be safe than sorry. I am so glad you are okay and not hurt. Make sure to get a good sturdy office chair to replace your broken one!

My mum was wearing socks last night and when she got up to use the toilet, she fell. It was scary because although I am a strong and very able-bodied individual at 55 years old...I just could NOT get her off the floor! I DID get the bright idea to put her gym shoes on her feet for traction and we were able to get her up and into her bed! I realized that I needed to get real about the fact that she is 76 years old and does have high blood pressure. Finding you two amazing creatures and your channel is so relieving! As a rehabilitation specialist, I'd like to thank you for a great video. It may well save a call to EMS. Turns out my own father, frail and 220lbs, was just too weak to stand when he fell on the kitchen floor. Fortunately, my son and I were there to lift, but dad had a hard time righting himself or assisting since his arms are quite weak. We log rolled him onto a deflated air mattress we have with built in pump ($50/Amazon). It took a few minutes and he was lying in a regular height bed. From there, it was easy. Not a bad backup and money better spent than inflatable lifts that cost nearly $1000.

Inside the house (very helpful 👍); my husband fell outside while walking our dog ; no chairs and he was over 205lbs so the best and first thing was to roll toward his side with all fours on the ground. With one bad knee, it was tough but somehow got him up (no injuries).😮

Oh I know that is difficult when you're in a situation where there are no products near you to help. That's where lift cushions and assistive devices help. Unfortunately, other than another person to help, that's what's available for many older adults. But do what you can to assess as to why he fell in the first place and then try to avoid that. I know that's almost impossible but we all have to change our habits and behaviors as we grow older in order to stay safe.

My dad has dementia and he doesnt FALL....he will just sit down on floor when leaving bathroom. Then he lays back and cant get back up alone. Thank goodness he hasnt hurt himself. He is starting Physical therapy again to help with his stability. Its hard for me to lift him up by myself, Im tiny and had a shattered humerus, and he is tall about 190lbs. If he can roll on his side it makes it easier to get him on all fours to get in to bed.

Well, as you said, at least he hasn't hurt himself, yet! I wonder, if he is laying down beside a wall, would it help to put grab bars on the wall by him, lower to the ground of course and tilted so that he could hold on to them to get up. That is, if he can follow the directions to hold on to them and pull himself up to a sitting position. You can add more grab bars going up the wall so that he can continue to pull himself up from sitting to kneeling, etc.

Great video & thanks ladies. And yes it can happen w/ ppl who have high-blood pressure - to feel pulsing in the head, or wobbly when getting up from the floor; even under more normal conditions - from getting up from sitting position - in a chair to standing up w/ high blood pressure - can cause one's head to throb; variable uncertainty.

Thank you very much. Mother called asking for help to get my Dad up off the floor. I drove to their house and watched this video on the way (safely). Showed up and the steps worked great. Two things I would highlight is the pause after getting to their knees, allowing them to catch their breath. Also, using a gait belt/patient belt helped getting him to the seated position in chair. Thanks again.

This is very good advice if the person who fell can actually assist you in getting themselves up. What if the person has zero mobility, is extremely stiff, and is essentially "dead weight" flat on his/her back on the floor, and furthermore, not wearing pants (i.e. just a hospital gown or adult diaper)? I have assisted my neighbor pick his sickly father up off the floor multiple times in this very situation. After each lift we are both exhausted, out of breath, with aching backs. It's quite an ordeal that we and his father go through each and every time. We also worry that we could injure his father in the process of lifting him up.
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 3 года назад
Here are our thoughts (long post): 1. First, I would want to know why this gentleman keeps falling. Your neighbor should have a physical therapist or occupational therapist assess the father/the living space so changes can be made to keep him from falling (for example, maybe he is now in a wheelchair and sliding out. A therapist can make suggestions so that this becomes less likely). 2. Second, your neighbor REALLY should be calling 9-1-1 to get his father up when he falls!! The EMTs are trained in this. You two are not and - as you mentioned - there is a great risk of you two dropping Dad and injuring him, not to mention getting hurt yourselves. Before my mom passed, she was confined to a wheelchair and immobile from the waist down. She slid out of her wheelchair and refused to let my father get a neighbor to help because she was only in a long nightgown and modesty prevented it. He called 9-1-1, the first responders were wonderful (preserved her modesty) and had her back in the wheelchair in a jiffy. They told my parents to call again if she fell - and not to risk having an untrained person help her up, due to the reasons I just mentioned (injury to her or to others). *Also, Dad can be covered with a small blanket or a large bath towel pinned around his waist to preserve modesty while trying to move him (or fasten it around his waist the secure it with a belt). 3. If 9-1-1 is not an option for some reason, your neighbor can look into emergency lifting cushions (seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/mangar-emergency-lifting-cushions/). The flat cushions are placed under the father lying on the floor (or wherever he fell). He would be assisted to a sitting position on the cushion and the cushions would be inflated in stages until they reach about regular chair height. He can be helped to stand from there. If he isn't very mobile, you and the neighbor will have to roll him onto one side, place the deflated cushion under him, then roll him back onto the device, though. The link I gave you has a video on it that shows how the lifting cushions work. 4. If the father is immobile and cannot help at all, a Hoyer lift would be best. It is a portable device that uses a sling to pick someone up via hydraulic lift (Yyu can see one at seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/hoyer-lifts/). Just like with the lifting cushions, you'd have to roll him over, slide the sling under him, then roll him back onto it before you could use it. 5. If your neighbor hasn't already done so, he/she should look into hospice care for her father. Hospice is NOT just for when someone is close to passing away. They can help for many months (sometimes years) before the end of life. They will do an assessment to see if Dad qualifies. If he does, they may cover some of this equipment (I don't know that for sure, but your neighbor can ask). In addition, there are MANY services they can provide (respite care for your neighbor, for one). These articles can tell you more about hospice: seniorsafetyadvice.com/when-to-call-hospice-for-elderly-care/ and seniorsafetyadvice.com/when-hospice-is-called-in-what-does-it-mean/ I hope these suggestions help. Good luck to Dad and your neighbor and thank you for being so kind to want to help!

I think the number 1 thing is to STAY CALM! When my mother slid out of her wheelchair onto the carpet in the living room, she was not hurt. My father began to panic and I had to stop him and say “look at her, she’s not hurt, she’s fine… Let’s just wait a moment” my mother actually thought it was funny and so we used humor during the process. Thank you for your comment. It would be important to know what stage of dementia he has. But I just assuming that he is unable to follow verbal instructions so you are having a difficult time helping him from the floor. If that is the case, it can be extremely difficult to do this task by yourself. If he is unable to assist you in the process, then the job will have to done for him. That means that two or three people are needed to help him up off the floor. Of course, the better solution would be to prevent him from falling in the first place as much as you possibly can. Although I know this can be very difficult. I would recommend that you contact your physician and ask for a prescription for an Occupational or Physical therapist to come to your home and assess how to best perform this task.

Thanks for your comment and a good question. Well, first things would be first which would be to cause no more harm which means to make sure that the person is not injured in such a way that moving him/her would make it worse. So, if you suspect anything at all, I would call 911 immediately. Otherwise, if it's very apparent that there is no major injury, then the only option is to physically slide the person away from that awkward position (such as being caught between the toilet bowl and the bathtub - for example). But again, sliding that person could cause more harm so the safest option is to call 911.

Many seniors don't have that much mobility
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 4 года назад
There certainly are seniors who do not have as much mobility as others, every person is different of course. There are so many factors that could affect someone's ability to assist in being picked up off the floor. Weight, joint mobility, cognitive functioning, vestibular health, strength and more. For those who are not able to assist with being lifted - the only options are for multiple persons to assist the elderly person and/or the use of equipment to lift that person up off the floor. It's much, much easier to work on preventing a fall than it is to help some seniors up off the floor. We have spent quite a bit of time on several articles concerning the issue of preventing falls.
@Chahlie
@Chahlie 3 года назад
It's a great video for normally fairly mobile people but I know there's no way many people can get their leg up from the kneeling position- you pretty much need to have them wrap their arms around the neck (hug) a strong person while someone positions the feet as you rise. Either way, best thing is avoidance :)

What about someone who has had both knees replaced? will this work?
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 2 года назад
Well, not sure cause it depends on the integrity of the knees and probably how soon after the surgery as well. You will have to talk to the surgeon or doctor about that. It will also depend on the amount of weight that is being placed on those knees too. If falling is an issue with someone who is unable to get onto their knees then the better solution might be to purchase a Mangar Lift cushion or even a Hoyer lift. Although a Hoyer lift is a big bulky thing. It just depends on how much assistance the person on the floor needs. Another option is the ResQUP Mobility Device - as long as the person has enough upper body strength, this may work too. We’re not doing enough. Everyone…survey your furniture. Which pieces can be attached to the floor so no slip, an easy matter with bracing screws. In the picture above…the nine drawers in the chest on the right, modify. The bottom drawer can be used to hide a ramp. Pull out a wood plank on hinges, just the right length to assist getting up. Butt skootch. Handicapped grab rails are not just for the bathroom. Install one to the sidewall by the plank. Keep garden gloves there. End the panic by having a firm grip. To the plank, add rubberized shelf paper or rubber stair treads, for grip. With your two sturdy chair example, it’s food for thought. But….one knee replacement would be tough, two TKR's pretty much impossible. Hide dollar store swimming pool inflatables. Two or three should get you to couch level, take off the cushion. Bless you. Bless information sharing. We know now…this is not IF…..not if….WHEN.

I love your ideas and modifications. I do agree that some furniture really should be anchored, especially to the wall. This is most true I think for smaller pieces of furniture like bookshelves. Anchoring to the floor may also work well with other pieces of furniture. Bottom line though, I think, is that if you have fallen once, the chances are very, very high that you will fall again. So, take your time, think before you take a step and for heavens sake, get used to using a cane or a walker. Using those things can really help to save you and help you to keep your independence.

@SeniorSafetyAdvice

Well, the pain issue depends on what is wrong with your knees so it's different for every person. But if you cannot get on your knees, the alternatives are a product like ResQUP... seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/resqup/ If the ResQUP is readily nearby, that can be possible to use if you're alone but you will need a good amount of upper body strength. OR a Raizer Lift seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/raizer-lift-device-for-home-use/ A hoyer lift might work but not many homeowners have the space in their home to store a hoyer lift. Lifting cushions can also be an option... seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/mangar-emergency-lifting-cushions/ Either way, most need another person to help you to get up off the floor. The other alternative, of course, is to call for help. That's why I always recommend either a medical alert device or an Alexa device in every room so that no matter where you fall you can call for help. Of course, the very BEST solution is to avoid falling in the first place so if that IS an issue then I would certainly address why you are falling and work to fix that.

Well, the video is for caregivers and others to show them how to help someone up from the floor. As we mentioned in the video, if the person cannot help themselves and you do not have the strength to lift them or to help them, then please call 911. Another alternative of course is to use any of the products that can help you to help that person get back up off the floor. seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/raizer-lift-device-for-home-use/ seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/mangar-emergency-lifting-cushions/ These are not inexpensive but I wanted to list them just in case. Of course, if your mother is falling often, then what really needs to be done is to assess why she is falling. And if it cannot be resolved then it would be recommended for her to use a wheelchair or some other assistive device to help keep her from falling. An assessment from an Occupational or Physical therapist should give you all the information you need to help your mom.

There is a demo video that you can see there). The lift is positioned beneath a person and raises them up to a chair-height position in order to stand up.

When trying to lift a heavy person, or when that heavy person is trying to help themselves up, the best thing is to use a lifting device. Of course, these are not inexpensive but that's the only option other than calling in 911 to help. Some products are... seniorsafetyadvice.com/tools/caregivers/indeelift-human-floor-lift/ seniorsafetyadvice.com/tools/caregivers/raizer-lift-device-for-home-use/ Some others are here... seniorsafetyadvice.com/tools/caregivers/ The other option is to use a wheelchair to help prevent falling in the first place. Or perhaps a rolling walker. If you haven't yet had a physical or occupational therapist come in to assess why your mother is falling in the first place (If it's not a medical condition) then I would highly recommend to do that.

My dad is in his 80s. He must use a Walker or cane when he walks. There’s lots of times he forgets to use his Walker or cane. So he falls on the ground. He can’t get up from the ground by himself. I cannot lift him up by himself. It has to be 2 people. So my mom and I can get him up quickly. So when my mom is not home. He falls onto the ground. My gosh it stress me out that when I lift him up he cannot stand up.

This is where the best solution is a tool like a hoyer lift or the Mangar cushions would need to be used. If there are no people to assist, then you will need a product to help you. We have a page on the Mangar cushions here - seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/mangar-emergency-lifting-cushions/.

How does the door get open, while you are still on the floor??*
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice Год назад
I am assuming you are asking how do the paramedics get in once you've called 911. If you haven't installed a lock box (many seniors neglect to do this), then they will basically try to break in. If you feel that you (or a loved one) is a fall risk, then we would recommend that you consider getting a medical alert device and also a lock box. To learn more, read our article on this very topic. seniorsafetyadvice.com/how-do-paramedics-get-into-a-locked-house/

What happens if there legs are to weak to push up.
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 3 года назад
n a case like that, the first thing we recommend is calling 9-1-1 emergency services when the person has fallen. Other than that - a lifting cushion device, or a hoyer left is what would be needed to help you off the floor. You can see what a lifting cushion looks like here. seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/mangar-emergency-lifting-cushions/ You can see a hoyer lift here: seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/hoyer-lifts/ Good luck!

What happens if someone is outside and it is raining??
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 2 года назад
Thanks for your question. The process is still the same although it simply depends on where you are outside. If you are in the middle of the sidewalk and there is no object near you that can help the person on the ground to get up then you will either need to life them yourself or get help. Either from someone else or call 911. If the person who fell is alone, that is where a medical alert device would come in handy. That is why we always recommend that anyone who may be at risk of falling (even if they haven't fallen as of yet) to get a medical alert device.

So sorry about the issues with your dad. I worked many years with patients who had suffered a stroke, I know how difficult it can be. Of course, the most important issue to address is why does he fall and how to prevent him from falling, if you can. But, the other issue is picking him up. You may have need to invest in a product that can help you to do that. There are several available - amzn.to/3EvnE14.

How do I help someone to bed?
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 2 года назад
Well, there are too many factors here to give you a helpful reply. 1) How much help can they give? 2) Can they stand? 3) Are you helping them from a wheelchair or from standing? 4) Are they using a cane, a walker, etc? 5) Can they follow verbal instructions? 6) Is their vision intact? 7) How high or low is the bed? 8) Are there bed rails installed? Many more questions to assess the best and safest way to help this person into and out of bed. I would recommend to ask your doctor to give you a prescription for an Occupational or Physical Therapist to come to your home to give you the best possible set of instructions (and possibly equipment) to help get your loved in and out of bed safely.

The technique we give in this video are mostly meant for someone who can assist themselves or the person who is trying to get them up off the floor. If you are unable to do that - then the solution is to use a lifting cushion or a hoyer lift. Unless of course emergency responders are the ones who are lifting you - they are normally strong and do the work with at least two people. Other than that - a lifting cushion device, or a hoyer left is what would be needed to help you off the floor. You can see what a lifting cushion looks like here. seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/mangar-emergency-lifting-cushions/ Another device that may help is called Raizer. @SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 2 года назад
Yes, of course. This technique shown in this video is NOT for anyone who cannot kneel. For someone like your mother - the best solution is two people to lift her or a Hoyer Lift machine to lift her. For someone like your mother - the best thing to do is to do everything that can be done to prevent her from falling in the first place. Although of course, nothing is 100%. Thank you for your comment.

This is not helpful. The seniors I cared for were too weak to help in any way to get turn off the floor. Also how many places in a senior’s house is there enough room to maneuver two chairs into place.
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 2 года назад
So sorry this was not useful for the seniors you are caring for. Certainly if they are too weak to help than the use of a product like a Mangar Lift Cushion or a Hoyer lift are an option or, of course, the help of another person or persons will be needed. Certainly, for seniors who are this weak, it's extremely important to do all that you can to avoid them falling in the first place such as using a wheelchair or assisting them with a gait belt while they are walking or transferring from one position to another. Of course, there will be areas in a home where it will be not possible to place two chairs but if there are multiple areas in a home where this is the case then it's certainly possible that the home environment is in dire need of decluttering. As an Occupational Therapist, I have worked in many homes where that has been the case and it's certainly always been my recommendation that certain pieces of furniture and/or items simply need to be re-homed in order to make the environment safer. Not only for the senior person but for the caregiver as well. Growing older requires certain changes and as difficult as it may be for everyone involved, in order to keep safety as a priority, these changes are necessary. Thank you for your comment.

NEVER attempt to help an elderly person up if they have fallen. CALL an Ambulance!! Fractures and pain or other internal injuries may not be evident until the next day....even if they say they feel ok. U are not a doctor or have x-ray vision to determine whether or not ..there is an injury...but you could be responsible for making the situation worse...AND what if they fell because they had a quick mini stroke??...and you are helping them up because to U all seems well???...CALL an ambulance.
@SeniorSafetyAdvice
@SeniorSafetyAdvice 2 года назад
Well, within the first 2 minutes of this video we DO state that if you have any doubt about the condition of the person on the floor to call 911. This video is intended to help caregivers and anyone who is with a senior when they have fallen to safely help that person back up again. We do mention several times that assessing the person on the floor is extremely important. This of course is only obvious assessments and again, if there is any doubt, call 911. But as in the case of both our mothers, the fall did not cause an injury. As an Occupational Therapist, I helped many patients to get up from the floor who were also not injured physically. Their pride was hurt much more. Again, as stated in the video, if you are uncomfortable helping someone up or if you believe they have injured themselves in any way from the fall, then of course, call 911.

Oh, well sorry that is your experience, but we all have different levels of pain tolerance. It's certainly not easy to help someone up from the floor. But for someone who experiences pain it may be worthwhile to use a tool like a Mangar Lifting Cushion or Indeelift. Also, it's important to try to prevent the fall in the first place. But I know that is even more difficult. Here are links to those 2 products, if it helps in any way. seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/mangar-emergency-lifting-cushions/ seniorsafetyadvice.com/products/caregivers/indeelift-human-floor-lift/

Absolutely true. Honestly, if someone cannot bend the leg, either one or both. The solution is to call 911 for help. You can try to use a Mangar Cushion or a Hoyer Lift but those may be difficult for that person as well.
