Irwyn Ince & Mark Vroegop stress the significance of recognizing and preventing pastoral abuse in religious institutions.
The first step is acknowledging abusive power dynamics and establishing methods for staff to express concerns about potential spiritual abuse, including annual evaluations and accountability structures. They also underscore the importance of senior leaders recognizing their influence and creating secure environments for voicing concerns.
Additional recommendations include seeking outside assistance, continued training and education, and having accountability processes in place to deal effectively with abuse when it occurs. While complete prevention may not be achievable, the emphasis is on equipping individuals to identify and respond to abuse and offering support for its victims.

I really hesitate to say anything here because of how it might be received but it’s too important of a topic to let it go unsaid. I’m not familiar with these pastors, and therefore have nothing against them personally whatsoever. I also have no intention of tearing them down, but here’s what I do know. I know what spiritual abuse is and what it isn’t. It isn’t just a mistake, it is a toxic pattern involving behaviors such as intimidation, control, manipulation, and deceit. These pastors clearly have no idea how damaging it is. If they did, they would never say that despite their efforts it will continue to happen. That’s like telling your congregation that despite your best efforts to train the children’s ministry workers, children are going to be abused in children’s church. No one would EVER have tolerance for kids getting abused, but somehow it should be understood that pastors will continue to spiritually abuse their people? It’s clear they have heard about this type of abuse but don’t understand it and don’t really believe it’s that harmful. Their solutions were weak at best and offensive at worst. As a Christian counselor, I would strongly suggest you take the video down.
