Love your content, but did you really just do an entire video on how to hit a fungo, without hitting a fungo?!? 🙄🤔🤣. Would have loved to see a demo on front hand vs back hand toss and such.

I have been an assistant coach for several years and this year has been my first head coaching spot in our 13u division and one of the perks is getting to send the defense to their field positions during practice whilst I have a catcher next to me and a fungo bat in my hand…. Ahhh bliss.. That being said I occasionally swing and miss in front of the whole team, coach’s, and parents. A little piece of my soul dies each time for sure, but the key is to just pick the ball up and say “woah that was a good pitch”… and pray you don’t strike yourself out.

Imagine watching a video of how to hit a Fungo and not seeing a single ball hit with a Fungo. 😂 All joking aside great video. Back toss definitely looks better. Best thing about fungo is no matter how bad the hit you can still play it off like it was on purpose 😂

My two favorite baseball dudes. I once got a personal tip from Coach Wash in ATL on catcher pop ups. Very stoked he took the time to show me. I’m about 25% with those. Same with 1B foulball pop ups. Tough. They take a lot of practice but the other 3 usually end up being pretty good practice for middle infield anyway. Wash said you got to hit those at your head height. Like the top of your head and just practice a lot. My sons an outfielder so I get a lot more practice at that. I’ve found through trial and error you will hit four types. The knuckle, the regular side spinner that drifts and carries, the end of the bat that dies, and then the really bottom of the ball that usually is unplayable or would be a SS fly out. You can learn to recreate these to make sure your players are getting different looks and not just catching the same fly ball over and over.

Great tips thanks. I can’t hit flys to 1st base to save my life let alone catcher pops. I’ll work on hitting it at head height makes sense!

It's very simple and very hard. But the advice is the same: grab a fungo bat and a bucket of balls and start hitting into the backstop (so you don't have to walk a mile picking balls up from the outfield). Practice builds competence, competence builds confidence, and confidence leads to performance. I spend a few hours every spring before the first team practice just hitting fungos by myself so at that first team practice, I'm ripping balls all over and look the best of anybody out there. And that kind of swing repetition translates into being stronger with better hand-eye coordination at the plate.

A common flaw when people start out with hitting fungos is tossing the ball to close to the body. Furthermore hittng the straightup fungos for the catcher really takes some practice to master.

Seems simple but these are the little things that set your two channels apart from others. I coached for over 20 years and have always been a front flipper since I was a kid just hitting a ball around. I didn't realize that there was snobbery when it came to "real" coaches using a back flip instead of front. I laughed it off and said whatever. Then I saw some youth coaches with a glove on one hand, holding a bat in the other and tossing the ball from the glove to hit it and was like, "now I get how those other coaches felt watching me" lol.

I was the worlds worst fungo hitter. I made a huge improvement when I traded my fungo for my kid's t-ball bat. Shorter and lighter, easier to use.

I use my kid's old 27" bat and can put the ball anywhere and do outfield fence drills from home plate. Move up to his old 29" and i struggle with popup accuracy. On a 34" wood outfield drills look like I've never swung before.

I’ve coached for a while now. You can custom make a fungo to your specifications. I have some of different lengths. We spend a lot of time indoors in the winter so I had a 32 inch fungo made. Absolutely love it for indoor work on one knee and for using it with my catchers blocking balls. I won’t post the names I use since the OP is also selling theirs, and maybe they can make custom length ones too, but there are many manufacturers. Flair knobs, traditional knobs, thinner handles, you can really dial them in. It’s not much more $ that buying one at a retailer.

Fungo tip. You don’t need an actual fungo bat. You can use a short -10 hot as hell usssa bat

Anybody else using a usssa 1.20 BPF slow pitch softball bat for a fungo? Any similar suggestions that give really good pop, so an old man doesn't have to work as hard.

Used to set up cones in 5,6 hole and shallow outfield & other spots and use em as targets for fungo. I’d do the bucket by myself while kids were at school and I told my wife when she got home what I was doing all day. Thought she’d be happy and say “good for you honey I’m proud of you for getting out & excersizing” but instead she said with such disgust “you did WHAT!!! You need to get a f***ing JOB” Lmao! she’ll never understand what it’s like to hit fungo. I’ll put my fungo up against anyone now though. I get surgical with this shit jake!

Yep! Coaching my son's team a few years ago, I would go to the fields on an off night and hit a bucket to each imaginary fielder. You look weird at first, but then everyone who strikes themselves out hitting infield begins to understand. Antonelli brings up a great point because throwing a ball up to yourself vs. tracking it from the pitcher is WILDLY different and takes time getting used to.

Hitting a fungo is no different from hitting a ball with a regular bat... the mechanics are the same!!!

for pop ups to the catcher, I've found that if my toss is toward my back shoulder, I stand a better chance of hitting the pop up I want. A toss about the middle of my body/head will give me a pop up to the infield.

Damn are we really concerned how we (coaches) look while hitting ground balls to players. If that's your deal, stop coaching. It's not about the coaches, it's about the players. You learn by how many you've hit over the years. It's not rocket science. If you hit easy skimmers, your not helping the players. Damn, I can't believe I'm actually watching this crap. Travel ball has ruined baseball. They've turned into a business instead of a game. Now it's a talent show for the coaches? It's a no wonder why today's game sucks something awful. Apparently they players are getting it from the coaches, big surprise. Kids impersonating what the adults do on and off the field. Learned behavior, look good 1st, win 2nd. C'MON MAN

These advanced levels have always been there. The difference is that there are fewer kids getting into athletics. They are either too busy playing games, have parents who don't want to put the work in, or don't want to buy into an expensive and time consuming sport. If you're not into people getting better and sharing how to do that with others then maybe this isn't the channel for you. I thought this was a great video and my kids will never sniff travel ball.

Yeah, it is no longer on their site, replaced by a white fungo without any weights or drops listed...bummer. And agree that hitting a fungo should include actually hitting a fungo...

... but why use a Fungo versus a regular bat? I have a old pre BBCor bat that I use to hit to Outfield Fielders... in my head may be I think I am putting less stress on my arm... If I use it for Infielders I take a lot of strength off so I don't injure anyone...

On a little league field it really won't matter much at all. I used my son's old LL bat for years. Was when we moved up to 90 foot base paths, it was tough to toss a ball and get good hits to the outfield and even challenging hits to the middle infield. That longer bat made a big difference.

WEIGHT. If you are hitting 300 balls at fielders a day a 30 ounce bat is far less efficient.

we had extra time in practice once and played a game of fungo baseball and I did the back hand and everybody was amazed and for some reason never had seen it before
