Excellent use of the curtain (fence) to learn the basic serve technique. I would add tucking the tossing arm into the chest as a way to initiate the upward motion of the racket. The tucking motion helps keep the racket arm from coming around too quickly (stay sideways as long as possible). I agree it is better to start serving toward the add court but for true beginners I would also suggest starting to serve from the service line and then gradually move back to the base line. Great job gentleman.

Excellent video, I've been playing tennis for 2 years now (learning)... I have lessons and play matches, but just a few chances to win because my serve is crap, I find it so difficult to learn, I practice over and over and I feel I am not coordinated enough to do it, even thinking to give up the sport many times and move on to padel. I am 32 years old and took the first racket at 30. Thanks for the video guys, I'll try the exercises and come back with more comment. Dennis

Good stuff. I'm a former pro athlete myself. But just started tennis. Unfortunately my coach doesn't break it down to me like that. My serve is terrible and i keep hitting the net. But all he says is i have to hit the ball higher up, i wait too long when it's fall down. He doesn't tell me how to stand or how to hold the racket. Nothing. So i'm here learning myself.

Great drills, good progressions. But guys, Continental = Hammer grip. Shake hand grip= Eastern Forehand. Never seen anyone shake hands by dropping their hand from on top.

Love your videos! Video idea: when to change baseline rally direction (ball is short/high). I see too many players trying to switch down the line from 5 feet behind the baseline :)

Is this a good exercise for children too? My 9 yr old granddaughter is having trouble learning to serve. Her forehand and backhand are coming along good, but she struggles with the serve.

Absolutely! Children can be easily injured learning the swing path on the serve. The 3 finger technique helps keep everything loose and helps ensure the mechanics keep the shoulder safe. Thanks for the question, best of luck to your daughter!

Great video. Too many coaches let beginner start with a pancake grip. Just doesn't make sense. I actually like to teach beginners to start with a spin serve. That way their forced to learn pronation.

Jeff Lewis agreed sir. Sometimes it depends on the student but our preference is certainly to get them using a continental grip and proper mechanics from the get go. Students often find it devastating when years later they have to change their serve to accommodate the rest of their game and find the established muscle memory difficult to overcome. However, if the student simply wants access to match play and needs a temporary serve we’ll incorporate the pancake as a “back-up serve” or ask them to use it only on the second serve.
