Thanks for this video, Zac. I had an opportunity to try this yesterday. Was stuck behind 2 trees in a "V", with about 190 yards to the green. I used my 4 iron, visualized the shot in my head, and compressed the hell out of it; even heard that nice "whizz" sound as it rocketed off. Split the trees perfectly and went under the overhanging branches. It stopped about 5 yards from the green, but it was about as good as I could have hoped for. Now I just have to work on not getting into that position in the first place! Keep 'em coming!

We learned this because as kids we played in the afternoon and there was, inevitably, a lot of wind, did I mention WINDY, where I grew up. You had to learn to play low. Add we played on courses with lots of elevation. I think watching Trevino was our best tutelage.

I normally don't use my 4 iron all that much. But I know what I'll be trying next time I go to the range. It's an incredibly useful shot. I just hope I can get the hang of it so I can use it next season. Great vid I could watch these shots all day.

Still loving this collection - have shared it with many golfing buddies - all very impressed, especially the very low markers who really appreciate what skills these shots require. A question if I may - I have the Titleist 716 CB irons which I assume are not as suited to these highly shaped types of shots as your MB irons - correct? When I get below 5 (currently 7) I'm hoping to move to blades - maybe the Titleist, Mizuno, TM etc. I love developing my shaping skills and my hope is that blades will give me a better platform. Was playing around with these on a round, first one out of deep rough went low and curved but not much distance, miss hit. By the end of the round I came up to a par three and and hit an eight iron that went 10 feet off the ground and bended left 20 yards, lol. That was not intentional but at least I know it can be done, need better pre thought process to get the right shot down, these take practice!

I worked at a Country Club and my boss let me follow Arnold Palmer's foursome around the course. Arnold would occasionally hit an exhibition shot. On the 18th tee he hit a stinger. It was the first time I ever saw one. I didn't even know that type shot had a name. It was one of the coolest things. That ball started out so low and then just magically like a Blue Angel soared way up. It was majestic. Thanks for the video.

Can you hit stingers with like a 9 iron? I'm thinking that if you are in a position where you need to hit 150 yards, but you can't do the typical shot that you would like to, can you shoot a stinger with a 9 iron with the same ball distance (150 yards)? So im hitting a 4 iron probably around 210 yards. Does the stinger travel as far as 210 yards or do you have like a math equation on how far the ball is going to reduce or better your distance? Love the vids!

I don't have a problem with the draw/hook stinger but I can't do the same for left to right. Seems like i leave the face open through contact and the ball always off right. If I understand correctly the face coming through on a cut stringer should be delofted with a little bit of an open face? Any tips on the left to right?

What is the yardage you're hitting to? 4iron is most likely a 240 club for you, I don't swing that fast, so much less yardage to practice for...

Not disappointed that youtube served me a golf video of magical shots. My question is how often are these applied in pro golf? It doesn't look like something that is frequently highlighted or well known to non-golfers. I would have expected to see an ESPN highlight of a golfball making a flipping 90 degree hook or floating into the sky go viral, but never seen this. Do some players use it commonly and others abstain completely?

I SUCK at stingers, but man do I love them when I hit them properly. The most satisfying shot in golf in my mind.

For the nerds here, what kind of angle of attack or dynamic loft are needed to do this? Just turning with the core, weight left and hands forward don't produce shots this low for me. I feel like it's a speed thing, like I don't have enough? Should the impact point feel more in front of the ball?

How I hit a stinger I just make simple and just close the face and hit a normal swing works good for me maybe not as far as the way you do it Zac but it’ works for me like I take an 8 iron close the face it goes about as far as hitting a6 iron normal but it really helps you get under tree limbs and we know what a pain they are ok just my version of the stinger not saying there’s anything wrong with yours Zac 👍👊on the vid

Great explanation. I was putting the ball too far back in my stance and thought I needed to use a 3-iron or 2-iron. I had the hook shot around a tree this past weekend. Took your advice on the setup dropping the trail foot back, and nailed it. Love this shot!

So basically it can be a shot similar to a punch when you wanna keep it low but can be varied for big hooks or cuts as well. Neat

I have saved countless pars because I taught myself to hit a stinger. No wild driver should be without a good recovery shot.

Half of these shots don't even require stingers and another 10% are shanks gone right.
