I play about 10 months now, but must say I find fingerpicking much easier in comparison with a pick. With the pick you must seek out each string as if using one finger. 4 fingers are so much easier. But the sound is so much crispier with a pick :(. Must learn the pick.
@jeremyformerlyknownastoken8218
JoshTheBoss Do you have long nails? Because that really helps. I think playing with your fingers gives a warmer sound.
@TheJoshtheboss
@TheJoshtheboss 7 лет назад
Token Live Mattters I noticed with the nails it sounds nice. I don't really have long nails. Maybe when I get better I might grow them then. Pick is nice for strumming, palm muting , and semi-picking (my own term). Finger style is a finger style though.

It's crazy how a thing like holding a pick and strum, which may seem ridiculously easy, can be such a pain in the neck. I've been playing for 10 years now and I quit the pick right away. Just like Mark explained I did it because it felt uncomfortable. At first, I felt stupid because everybody was playing well with it and I was the only clumsy strummer out there. Little by little I found my fleshy sound and I loved it. I still do. The truth is, it always depends on what you intend to play and on the sound you're looking for. Then I moved to fingerstyle and man...that's just mindblowing. And again, as soon as I got better, I thought using a pick is just non-essential. Well, after 10 years of playing I'm here looking for advice. I want to take a step forward and learn how to use the pick effectively. And I am sure I will in (almost) no time because I really itch for it. I just wanna say it's never too late to change your mind and it's never too late to start over.

Just to “piggy-back” off of many comments, you were able to persuade me to use the pick in a way nobody else has. I believe your accent demands close attention, therefore I was able to understand exactly what needed to be done. A plethora of great guitarists and teachers simply talk about the universal “A-OK” sign as the standard way to hold tuned pick. You introduced the need to extend the thumb just past the edge of the pick, which for me, makes all the difference. Thank you Mark the Guitarist!

@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel
@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel 11 лет назад
Yeah, it's tricky sometimes to get that from video even... So it's a 'birds eye view' we are talking about. Looking down on ur strumming arm. Imagine a line from the elbow to ur thumb. Is it a straight line or does it angle out at the wrist? It should also run along parallel to the strings. Distance from the strings should be small.
@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel
@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel 11 лет назад
Haha..head games are our biggest enemy...so true. Straight strumming is probably the issue...you should land on the strings from an angle...like an airplane landing. Be as lite and gentle as you can. Let me know if this helps...otherwise, try not to get too caught up in what people say. In time, you cant help but improve, just from spending more time.
@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel
@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel 11 лет назад
It seems weird, but you'll actually have to constantly adjust the pick as you play. Hold it lightly. After a while, you automatically adjust without really noticing anything. Like driving a car in a straight line....you still have to adjust the wheel to keep straight.

Whatever works is exactly correct. Another option might be to attach a 'thumbpick' folk style. Hard to say without seeing you pick now. Or just get right into the fingerstyle like Mark Knophler/Chet Atkins etc

@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel

Basically you want your thumb to be pointing down the length of the strings...let ur wrist be involved on hitting the strings too...dont be afraid of ur fingers, palm or wrist hitting the strings too
@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel
@MarkTheGuitarGuyChannel 11 лет назад
Lol..Sure, it's a trust thing mostly. The strum should land across the strings like an Aeroplane touching down on a runway. So it angles down onto the strings...I hope this is clear enough for ya:)

Klodi I was the same about two years ago and only a few months ago did I actually start really getting into it and I wish I had sooner, so just practice rather than leaving it like me, because since I started trying harder to learn, I’ve gone from cheap, low- grade books to playing actual known songs by known artists, such as muse, nirvana, and way more. So just keep trying, it’s not impossible if you give it a go and you will get genuinely good at guitar after a short while.

haha it has only been a few days. This guy is really advanced. First you need to build calluses on your fingers by playing a little every day for a couple months. I've only been at it for a week or two and it still hurts after a few minutes but getting better. I just randomly found partymarty easyguitartunes to learn Let My Love Open The Door by Pete Townsend and it is very simple and yet I still don't have it down. Gotta start somewhere. Now that I just learned a new way to hold the pick from in this video I can't wait to practice it later.

Every person that begins to learn guitar, thinks that their 'unique' hands/fingers/body shape/injury etc is a reason to doubt that they'll EVER get this damned guitar thing hehe. The size of your fingers I'm sure is not a real problem. Although, I can't say for sure without seeing them hehe. It's a really great point you've brought up. Thankyou for that, I'm going to address this exact issue in my next round of videos. Just push on through!!! :)

The HEY OK technique saved my life. I was getting very frustrated as I couldn’t hold my pick properly and I couldn’t make good upstrokes. I’m going to practice this technique but I know THIS IS IT for me !!! Thanks !!!

Wow congrats on starting the journey. 6 hrs every night is huge...so you'll be playing great in no time at all. You should be able to strum through a song easily within the first few weeks at that rate. Everyone is different though. Master the '5 fundamental strums' and you'll find the left hand stuff really easy.

That's actually normal and part of the deal with strumming. The 'scratchplate' is there for that very reason...so you're good as gold:)

I've been playing for so long without a plectrum and have only rarely used one. My guitar is for repair at the minute and watching this has given me the mindset that I'm going to nail using a pick when I get it back. Thanks for the great video.
