Exactly like my bow hold! I have struggled to explain the thumb placement to students, so you really helped me by distinguishing between the thumb "pad" and "tip/nail"

If you're having a shaky bow then my advice is always to stop focussing on the hand itself and look at what's happening further up your arm and especially your shoulder and upper back. If you can relax the big muscles, the smaller ones will follow. Micromanaging the tiny movements can result in a load of tension that just makes the shaking worse! Hope that's helpful 😀

I keep sayin... YOU. ARE. A. WONDERFUL. TEACHER!!! The person who was giving me private viola lessons was highly skilled in many ways, but she SUCKED at explaining the bow hold & enabling my mastery of it. Several weeks ago the pandemic ended my lessons (it’s May 2020 now), so I turned in my rented viola, and I thought I was ok for a while, but I REALLY missed that experience of learning and the achievement of tiny increments of (what has to, for now, pass for) “mastery”😂- not to mention missing the sound of the instrument. So, even as I write this, I’m waiting for delivery of my brand new (Glasser carbon composite!) viola! But now without a teacher, I turned to RU-vid to see who might help me recall (and improve) a helpful understanding of viola bow hold....... and here YOU are, again. You are a gifted teacher!!!! PLEASE post more instructional vids!!! I hope I’m not coming across as creepy; I’m just an (almost) old lady who recognizes (and benefits from) your skills. Thanks for posting this helpful video, and I’ll keep hoping for more of same! Stay healthy, keep playing, KEEP TEACHING, and keep growing! God bless 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐

Hey Drew, can you teach us counting and rhythms. I have trouble keeping rhythm or reading rhythms that are in 8th/16th and notes with dots and dotted slurs and ties while playing. Especially when I perform without a metronome on. Teachers say I don’t have a sense of tempo or rhythm. I am just terrible at breaking up notes and subdivide. Please help me I greatly appreciate it if you would create a video or reply with advices:) also I count by 1-2-3-4 1+2+3+4+ 1e+a etc...

Excellent video which answers the question I have had lately as a 3 year beginning adult violist--Is my bowhold ok? You explained the mechanics of it very well and the answer to my question was answered--Yes it its. I have a question regarding buying a better bow. My ceiling on $ amount is at $300. I do not want to go over that amount at this time. I'm looking for a wood bow but keep getting the CF bows pushed at me which I don't particularly care for due to the sound (not warm). Do you recommend any bows in that price range? I also think I prefer a heavier bow if that make sense. I feel it give me more control. Thanks!

Thank you for the video! Really helped me to check my holding position. I have one question, my teacher said that i should 'push down' the bow with index finger, to give it more power to the string and make richer sound. But it sometimes really makes my index finger painful. Is it correct way to play viola? Or is there other ways to play it more correctly??

I typically try to avoid the idea of pressing with the index finger in particular. When I add weight to the string, yes, the index finger leads the charge. But I think it's more of a transference of your arm weight to the entire BOW HAND. No one finger should take the entirety of the burden. The bow hand should work as a unit! =) If you're feeling pain, try to find ways to distribute some of that arm weight into your other fingers as well!

I have a question. When you were a Juliard, and/or even now, what did you base success on? Was it a chair placement in an orchrestrea, was it a mental goal, like playing a piece well, was it getting thought school learning.

I focus only on whether or not I am getting better. Progress. That's what I define my success upon. Oh, and being able to pay rent--that's dope too haha. You have to look at what you value and really see if it matters in real life. I always sat in the back of the orchestra at Juilliard, so many people would definitely view me as a failure. It's all about perspective

I can move my wrist up but not all the way down. Also just moving my wrist in general on both hands is a bit of a stuggle for me. Do you know any wrist exercises that can help me have a loose hold and not a tight grip (for both hands)?

Hi, tvk! I have a question. When I go to the tip of the bow, my teacher tells me to lift my pinky finger to keep my bow straight(during down bow) and then place it back as I go back to the frog- is this bowing also ok? I do find it comfortable, but then I see people do it differently- and then I know I'm supposed to keep third and fourth finger not spaced from each other on the bow, but the problem is, those two fingers can not touch- I literally have some sort of indentation between them making my fingers "almost eternal Spock fingers😂😖"... Do you have any advice or suggestions on what to do? Thank you!

Hiiii! Well, I honestly don't subscribe to pulling the pinky off the bow (except for maybe tremolo). If there isn't a reason to reduce the stability of my bow hold, I just don't do it haha. However, like I said in the video, there are many ways of using the bow, and many of them aren't wrong! =) I'm not sure about "supposed to keep third and fourth finger not spaced from each other on the bow." That's not generally a rule that I hound myself over, because I'm not sure if it really matters haha. Are you getting too tight? Too much tension? If there's nothing inherently wrong, I don't think minor, cosmetic quirks like that are going to make or break your playing? Howeverrrrr, I could totally be wrong! I will continue to learn about technique for the rest of my life =)

Well, my teacher and I have short fingers and arms and she also taught me that. I asked her if I could lift it lightly and she said "yes, even I do it". I didn't expect that. There's nothing wrong with it, but all the other fingers must still be doing their job. Because what actually happens is that you're doing a pendulum movement, shifting the weight when you bow. So, notice when you rest your bow on the frog to start a down bow your pinky is doing the heavy work there, like TVK said, it's balancing everything, but your index is the "least important" in that moment (I say "least" because it still gives direction). BUT as you move the bow up and you get to the middle you'll see that both the pinky AND index, if you lift them up the bow still is balanced. Now, when you get to the tip, the index cannot be lifted because the weight is now 100% onto it. It's a pendulum. I have short fingers so I lift it up JUST A LITTLE BIT THOUGH; it's not like I lose control or hand frame. Maybe you have short fingers too😉 This was long lol, but hope it helped. English isn't my first language, so excuse any mistakes.
