I started crocheting twenty minutes ago watching another youtube video, and was close to quitting already because I can't control the tension. Luckily I though to look for alternative ways to hold the yarn. Thank you!! I think either the minimalist or your choice will work best for me, even though I'm still having issues with the tension.

Wow! I’m glad this was helpful. I also have a video that explains how to crochet with consistent tension, which might be helpful for you. It also just takes practice to get used to crocheting but it sounds like you will pick it up quickly! Crocheting can feel awkward at first but keep going and I promise it will “click” for you ❤️ let me know if I can help in any way or if there is a specific video you’d like to see! Happy crocheting! 🧶🧶🧶

I've been learning for about a week now and still have trouble. I'm still experimenting but I think tension is a big learning curve - just like the grip.... I kept switching back and forth between knife and pencil grip. I decided that for me, the pencil grip requires more actual wrist-bending (as opposed to rotation) so I'm pretty consistently using the knife hold now. Like you, I kept getting so frustrated. I just kept chaining and stitching - assuming that eventually it will start clicking. In the meantime, my colorful vocabulary is getting a workout 😜.

I'm new as well and I'm having trouble with 3 things. Holding the wool,tension and I keep splitting the wool with my hook. What are the best hooks sizes and yarn types to do simple Granny Squares?
@crochetunraveled
@crochetunraveled Год назад
Some hooks are more likely to split the yarn (they have a sharper point) so you may want to try different hooks. I would recommend using acrylic yarn to start. It shouldn’t split as easily and it’s cheap compared to natural fibers. For granny squares, I would use a medium, worsted weight yarn (4) and a 5mm hook. Hopefully this helps!

Method 3 has been a game changer for me! I naturally crochet tightly and wasn't aware of other ways to hold my yarn, but this method has opened up new possibilities. Method 4 also offers some great techniques, so I find myself alternating between the two to keep my stitches even. ❣️

Thanks so much! I've been crocheting for 5 years, and I'm a teenager, but my hands get cramps in them a lot because of how I use my fingers, and I really didn't want to end up with artheritis before I'm 20. These are way more comfortable for my hands and will definitely make my continuous journey easier❤

I know what you mean! I'm 62,,and have a middle finger that is affected on my right hand,called a " trigger" finger.Tge tendon doesn't work right and sometimes I have to get it "unstuck," by opening it manually.It is a simple procedure a doctor does to release the tendon with a small incision in the palm at the base of that finger.I just haven't done it yet But I'm glad it doesn't interfere with my crocheting!

I taught myself to crochet as a teen and in the 70's I had only library books to guide me.Now after 40+ years of crocheting I was just curious to try different ways to hold the yarn,since I have developed over the a totally different way that seemed to come naturally for me in a personal way .I find it helps with my annoyance with the "tension" issue,and it may be useful to someone reading this...my "method " is to thread the yarn over the ring finger,then under the pointer finger,then around and over the thumb,followed by going back under the pointer finger then over it to crochet.I sometimes wind a too long length of forward yarn around the pointer finger a few times to tighten for the hook area that you work at.The reason I like it so much is that I can extend my thumb to pull forth more yarn as needed.Its unusual I know, but it works for me! I have an issue with the lack of being able to control the slackness in yarn and this "way" the thumb pulls the yarn like a tension on a sewing machine and as I tend to crochet too tightly it helps with uniformity for my own projects .I also hold my hook underneath as you would a pencil.But your video is great for trying out ways that may be easier for beginners to do and you did great! I was curious to see if anybody else does it the way I do,but you just meet to get comfortable with whatever works for the individual crocheter personally..I'm a new sub!

I learned to crochet when I was 3 from my great grandmother, MeMe, who used to babysit me a lot. I was pretty good at it and kept it up until I was 10 or so, then got distracted with other crafts and never picked it up again. Now I’m reteaching myself at 42! I was struggling with just holding and basic chains until I found this video. I like the first method, but yours works the best for me! Thank you for sharing! 💜

Thank you for such a wonderful visual tutorial on how to hold yarn. It may sound silly, but placing my hand on the table like you did helped 100% vs trying to wrap the yarn with my hand in the air. For me, I am just not as coordinated (yet lol) with my nondominant left hand. My grandmother did a lot of crochet and tatting. I remember she always had a squeeze ball or the hand exerciser grippers in her left hand when she'd take a break. It makes sense to build up strength😊 Thanks again!! ❤

If you hold item with first finger and thumb the yarn round little finger under ring finger and over middle finger the tension of yarn is perfect. Hold the hook like a pen much better and no rsi of fingers. Paton method is much easier on wrists.

Hello Narges! First of all, thanks so much for watching. Secondly, I’ve looked up the 3D daisy and it looks like there are many variations! I don’t have a tutorial for the 3D daisy, but I’m sure you can find one for a design that you like on Pinterest or here on RU-vid. Let me know if you have any questions! Happy crocheting 🧶

I don't have an issue with tension... I watched your video hoping I'd find a way to have my left forefinger less involved. It is getting so sore! I can't figure out why.

I can't hold it any of those ways 😶. I've tried, but the only way I can crochet is by holding my work between my middle and ring fingers, and feeding the thread through in-between my index finger and thumb. I cannot keep my index finger extended while holding the thread on top.. It may be because I cut hair years ago (still do occasionally) and control the hair cutting scissors, or just because I like for all my fingers to work, except for my lazy pinky.😁

I am having trouble with either it's too tight or its too loose and I just started 2 days ago. My mother and sister could crochet but I couldn't learn from them. I am taking a class at the library where I work. It has its advantages! It was suggested by my crochet teacher to find and check out how to hold the yarn comfortably. My fingers cramp up because I am holding to tightly and if I loosen my fingers, I loose what rhythm I had. The other problem I have is I somehow hook half the yarn loop and make loosened holes in the yarn making it frayed. Any help or advice you can give would be appreciated.
@crochetunraveled
@crochetunraveled Год назад
Well, first of all, it’s amazing that you only started 2 days ago! A lot of this is just going to take some practice, but it sounds like you are off to a good start considering the fact that you can pinpoint exactly what you are having trouble with! What might help is first of all, get some acrylic yarn. I’m not sure what you’re using now, but I feel like acrylic yarn is harder to split than some other types. The type of hook might help, too. Some have a more rounded head that will be less likely to poke through the yarn and split it. Also, acrylic yarn is cheap, so if you mess up no worries! I would try out a few different ways of holding the yarn and then just figure out what feels most natural to you. Then I would suggest you just pick one type of easy stitch to do (probably dc or hdc) and then, using your cheap yarn, make a big rectangle that has no purpose other than being something you use for practice. Practice making your rectangle while listening to a podcast or watching a tv show in the background. This will help you not think so much about what you are doing and I think you’ll naturally find a flow where you’re not gripping the yarn so tightly and your tension will become more consistent. Don’t put pressure on yourself 😊 it’s a new skill and it’s supposed to be fun andenjoyable! You got this! ❤️❤️

Interestingly enough, the way I hold my yarn and hook wasn't shown. Between my pinky and ring finger, over my pointer, nothing looped around. I use my pointer and thumb to hold my work and hold my hook like a pencil. I began crocheting in the 70s.

I’ve been trying to improve my technique lately because I’m self taught and I naturally fell into having the yarn on my right side and wrapping it around the hook with my right hand while holding my work in my left. Is this a known technique or is it just me making things up? I will be trying out these methods as well. Thanks!

I have seen someone crochet really quickly with this technique! It is a common way to work with yarn while knitting but not very common for crocheters. If it works for you, I say go for it!

I find it difficult to crochet holding yarn in my left hand , I was an ardent knitter so I tend to use my right hand and kind of knit the yarn If that makes sense? Mmy tension is quite loose though I keep having a go with my left hand but I always go back to my right so frustrating!! So weird as I am actually left handed lol

Hi Karen, have you heard of crochet rings or yarn tension rings? It’s a ring that you can wear on your left hand and wrap the yarn around it to keep tension. Maybe that would help?

I feel for you because I have the same problem! I would just suggest trying out different methods and make sure you are taking care of yourself. Maybe you can set up an elevated yarn holder or something so you don’t have to use your left hand as much… not sure what this would look like but something to think about

You didn't include the most minimalist method. Just hold it between the middle and index finger (over the pinkie, ring, and middle). I held it this way for years (and still do sometimes - depending on where the ball/skein of yarn is located in proximity to my hands and hook).

I have difficulty holding the yarn, but your favorite way seems to be what my fingers want to do. I really like this video, I like your clam voice and slow instructions. However, the jangling “music” annoys me absolutely and since I need your voice I can’t turn off the sound. I am a beginner and it hasn’t been easy. I just cannot tolerate the awful noisy music partnered with something that should be soothing (not nerve-wracking).
