Out of nowhere 11.17.0-50 has been released for the Nintendo 3DS firmware in all regions. It seems "stability" is the only information Nintendo has given us about the update. It seems the System Settings, eShop app, and Internet Browser were updated. For US-region 3DSes, the HOME menu was also updated. Here's what you should know: ◉ If your device is running Luma 10.2.1 or higher, it is 100% safe to update. You can check your Luma version by holding (Select) while booting your device. ◉ If your device is on an older Luma version, you should update Luma before you update your device to 11.17.0. ◉ If your device does not yet have custom firmware, do NOT update to the latest version, as installation methods are currently unclear. I plan to create an 11.17.0 tutorial once more information is known about it. However, in the meantime, I will release a video on how you can update to this version if you already have a modded system. So make sure you stay tuned! Thanks and do let me know any updates on the situation.

I have a 3DS that has not been updated for several years. Do you need to be updated to 11.16.0-49 or can you use a much older version? I'm currently updated to 11.5.0-38U. Can I follow your tutorial and have it work?
Someone has already mentioned this but I'll say it again. Thank you for saying which buttons to press through the whole process, I really appreciate it. I watched the video once before attempting it myself. I've always been too scared to mod anything but this video made the process especially easy.

Still working as of March 13 2023. This is by far the best modding walkthrough I've ever used. I'd been stressing about the e-shop closure but now this is like a massive upgrade instead.
@@rowan_.1548 If you didnt figure it out yet I had the same issue and found a way to trouble shoot it. So what worked for me, is at the beginning of the process, right after reformatting the SD Card to FAT-32, you are supposed to insert the SD card back in and turn on the system so that it copies over the Nintendo account information to the formatted SD card. At this step, go into Data Management and then DSiWare. It will take a second to load and probably say there is no accessible data. DO THIS STEP before loading in the software on the SD card. Once everything is on the SD card (including DSiWare), boot the system back up with the SD card in there and navigate back to Data Management and then DSiWare. It should open up the black screen and congrats the hardest parts are over! (Edit: I just did everything as of Mar 17th 2023)
DISCLAIMER TO ANYONE WHO HASNTED UPDATED TO 17.0 AND IS USING THIS METHOD. At 9:32 where your 3DS is supposed to fail a system update, since 17.0 came out, it will update your system instead of getting error. What I did was to disconnect my 3DS from the wifi (i just unplogged my router) before pressing ok on the update. After it will fail the update, once you reach the Error Code screen, connect back to the internet and the rest of the steps will work as normal. :)
As of 12/27/2022 this homebrew method still works for those who are curious. This is my first time ever homebrewing any device and lemme tell you this guide was super helpful. I homebrewed my 3DS (2011 version) and am currently installing Virtual Console games that I never got the chance to play when I was a kid. I 'm barely scratching the surface of homebrewing and am already loving it! This definitely gave my 3DS some life back to it and I plan to basically take it with me wherever I go. 10/10 guide don't be scared to homebrew! (Can't wait till I can safely homebrew my Nintendo Switch once a more simpler method arises).

My brother who can't use computers wants to tell you that your tutorial is brilliant! He loves how specific you are about things, how you read out the names of things, and how you specify stuff like the number of times you press A during whatever part. @@big_ph1sh at what point are you stuck? Cause what I did was watch 10-20 seconds, go back, and watch them again while going alone. It's nice to have an idea of what is ahead, and makes the chance of doing it wrong smaller

probably one of the best hot to videos ever imo. I've never dared to jailbreak any device i had in worry that I would fuck it up along the way or something. @@kk_t7333 so the drive name can be different for each person. Just go into your "This PC" where you can see all your drives and choose the name of the drive your SD card is on. Just triple check so you don't accidentally format your computers Hard Drive, haha.
@@12icki it's recommended to use 128gb or less otherwise loading times take longer. keep in mind it needs to be reformatted to fat32 if it's above 32gb.
What region was your console? As I am wondering if it works for other regions such as Pal for Australia and Europe. Also, for the Japanese version (cheap second one).
As of February 19, 2023 it still works :) for those following this tutorial with an old 3DS XL, I just used a Sandisk 32 GB extreme SDHC sd card and followed every step carefully. I kept going back on the video to hear every single step before proceeding. Good luck! 💖
IT WORKS!! i know i'm pushing it super late to the homebrew crew but on feb 22nd it still works! the clear instructions were very helpful and as someone who second guesses every move (i had tried to homebrew before but was too afraid of bricking my system) i appreciated the simple steps! really helpful & great vid!!
@@ioquando984 late reply but yes, i was initally running low on the storage but i've since upgraded to a 128gb sd card (don't recommend, use either 32gb or 16gb if thinking of upgrading, formatting it was a nightmare) and it works perfectly fine.
@@JellyClawCake which size sd card are you using? up to 32gb you should be able to format it on pc through system settings but if you're using a bigger sd card than 32 you'll need to download a formatting software to change it to fat32. there is a really helpful tutorial i found on youtube when formatting my 128gb if you still need it.

@10:30 i was able to get in the configuration but when i pressed "start" to save, it would close but wouldn't open the luna 3ds custom home screen. Is the custom 3ds home screen supposed to like exactly like mine, i have a dark mode thing as well as apps is different spots.
Modded my "New" 3DS XL on January 24th, 2023, and I had absolutely no issues outside of guiformat thinking my E: drive was open when it wasn't. I was super worried going into this, but it was *way* easier than I thought it was gonna be. Props to Anton! Tip: When you want to eject the SD card from your computer, make sure to right-click on the appropriate drive and select 'Eject.' This is to prevent possible data loss and/or corruption Edit: Wanted to use this video again to mod my cousin's old "New" 3DS XL, but of course, Nintendo's on their bullshit again >:(

@@Ayochriiiss I think the main reason why people do it is to mod games. For example, I’m actually going to attempt this because I want to install CTGP-7 so I can play custom tracks on Mario kart 7 because Nintendo is probably going to shut down the online multiplayer in it.

Could you help me? In the ID0 folder I only have the other folder exdata but none of the others, does this matter/ Did you have the others? Also, when attempting to setup the proxy server it doesn't start the b9sinstaller the bottom screen goes red and stops, I am also using a new San disk 128gb micro-SD do you have any idea if what i may need to do?

as of april 17 it still works perfectly fine! very nice tutorial and very well explained! had some issues at having a red screen from 10:15 but i just re-did the steps and it worked fine at the second try
You made this so easy...after seeing the eShop go down, I can finally hunker down and not have FOMO and play so many of the games I missed out on. Just finished installing all of this on my 3DS. I'M HYPED.

As of January 30, 2023, this guide was flawless and extremely easy to follow. I was skeptical to mod my 3ds myself at first because I've never done anything techy, but doing this saved a lot of money since I was thinking of buying a modded 3ds off etsy. Now I can play a bunch of games for the price of $17 (The sd card) !

I wouldn't say I'm tech savvy, I love gaming and tech but am very much a pick up and play person. This worked for my Nintendo 3ds xl with an sd of 4g, and I’m surprised it can work very well! Not a single frame drop, I absolutely recommend modding your 3ds as the eshop is closing in march, great tutorial!
@@ioquando984 for me it worked and the sd was the one included, even if it works I recommend a higher storage sd because you’ll have very common problems with storage
What does that mean? Also are you using a USB stick or the card adapter thing and would I install it the same way you describe in the video? I got a 2ds and want to mod it but I don't know how to mod or update it when I do I stall the mods. Sorry for all the questions

Had a bit of trouble, but that was on my end with SD cards. Figured out how to format them correctly, and the tutorial worked like a charm! Did it on a 2DS XL and 3DS XL. Working as of 4/7/2023 :) Thanks mate!
@@devandstuff4919 Well upon putting the card in your computer, there should be a pop-up that allows you to format the card. (I don’t really know how to explain it, as my dad was able to figure it out.) Plus, as I said, it might’ve been the cards I were using. (Oh, and for formatting, there’s of course the method in the video, using the fat32 program.) When the cards weren’t working, they had an extra hidden file that was interfering with the data storage on the 3DS. I forget what the file was called, but perhaps you can check if that’s present on yours? I think formatting them with the original pop-up is what got rid of the files. I’m sorry if this isn’t helpful, I’m not too great at explaining things.

as of march 29, 2023, this tutorial still works : ) thank you for posting such an in-depth video tutorial along with the accompanying text on your website, anton. i used both in tandem and now my 3DS is fully modded. i had no issues installing anything and my 3DS works great - the only thing i noticed is that it takes a tiny bit longer to boot up, but that's probably bc i haven't run it in a few months and have also changed the sd card (it is also not that big of a deal when i can still play it with no problem : ) ). i cant want to back up my favorite games and customize everything. you rule!
Still working as of March 1st. Everyone needs to mod their 3ds to play Mario Kart 7 on March 27th in honor of the eshop closing for the 3ds and Wii U. Spread the word everyone.

I just want to bring this to yours and everyone's attention: As of May 23, 2023, Nintendo has pushed out update 1.17.0-50, which officially breaks ALL known exploits, including the one on this video, despite Nintendo officially killing off the 3DS with the closure of the eShop on it. So if you want to hack your system do not update or wait for an exploit that will work on update 1.17.0-50

Phenomenal walkthrough, thank you. had an issue at the start after purchasing a large sd card that just would not work well with the reformatting. After buying a 32gb card that was already ExFat by default everything worked perfectly. so it's working as of 10 April 23, I used an old DS XL. The H store is pretty amazing.
3:51 Hi! Sorry to bother you but could you maybe help me? I am on the FAT32 Website and my SD Card is F:\, but the website says something about G:\. It won’t let me change it and i honestly don’t know what to do. It also wants me to download something i am not very sure of :(
Great & clear guide. Only difference for me is when I backed up my SysNand, the resulting folder only had 3 files (was missing boot9.bin). Shrugs shoulders, everything seems to be working fine.

I absolutely love you my guy! I followed this tutorial sometime late last year and successfully completed this. I’m here today to say that anyone who says/thinks “nah I don’t need a backup” my answer to you is YES YOU FRICKING DO if it wasn’t for the backups of everything I would have a completely corrupted sd card and zero way to fix it. So in short, once you’re all finished getting everything setup take literally 5 whole minutes to secure copies of everything!!!
