Thank you for this video! I appreciate You mentioning to get a copy stamped signed declaration of intent to homeschool. I plan to do this this year. 💜💖
I love how in depth you made this and how you mentioned the subjects required to be taught! Sometimes people think they can just start homeschooling and don't know they're required to teach certain subjects.
I always liked the fact that we didn't need to turn in a letter of intent to homeschool until our kids turned 8. I spoke at the WHO homeschool conference every year for a decade, and they are definitely a good resource.
It is really interesting to hear what the laws and regulations for homeschooling are in a different country, although many of them were very similar to Canadian laws 🤷🏼♀️ and thanks to remind me to check them again 😊
I am also in Washington. We have our first year of testing this summer. Everyone I've talked to says we can use CAT testing. Have you used this before? Is it valid here? If you have used something else what do you recommend?
We have always just done our testing through the local public school because my kids take a class or 2 there most years. I’m pretty sure the CAT would be fine. I’d probably do something like that if I had to do the testing.
I know it's been a year,but...can we pull our child (14yo) out in the middle of a quarter and file the DOI same day and start or do we have to wait for the start of the next term?
WA state law question here. Two years later from this video and more of a personalized question . Do you keep grades in their portfolios ? Or just their assessments? I know the law doesn't specify anything about grades or credits. Would like to know your opinion on these two.
This was such a helpful video thank you! Question… My 6 year old did kindergarten in a private school - because of this do I need to send in my letter of intent to the public school system before he’s 8?
That is a very good question and I would be nervous to answer it. I would definitely check out the Washingtonhomeschool.org with that question. They have a Facebook group that would be a great place to ask that question too.
Thank you for this video! I am starting homeschool for the first time this year and just looking to find out more about record keeping. Do we need to create report cards/transcripts for the records? If so, how do I go about creating this?
You don’t need to do any grading or transcripts until high school. Then, as the homeschool parent you assign grades and create the transcript for your child based on what they are planning on moving into after high school. If you are not going into or near high school, you have lots of time to learn how to do all that. I’m just starting the high th school process for myself, so I’ll be making videos about all that as I learn myself :)
@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool thank you for getting back to me! That gives me so much relief. My oldest is just starting 3rd grade so I have a few more years. Looking to learn more from you!
Oh… and I’m assuming you are asking specifically about WA laws, because this is a WA video. If not you need to check with your state, but they rarely require report cards or transcripts for younger kids. Welcome to the channel!
Question: I started my son homeschooling a year early so he will be age 6 and 7 in January for 2nd grade. I am wondering for the standardized testing when does he need to begin being tested?
Assuming you watched this video because you are in Washington, you don’t need to do anything at all until the day he turns 8. As soon as he is 8, file your DOI and get him tested within the year (between ages 8-9). That is my understanding of the law. As far as the tests, I would check out the Washington homeschool organization to see what tests are acceptable in Washington.
My husband is getting stationed in WA in the spring. We are coming from a very low regulated state, TX. My son turns 8 a month before we move to WA. From my understanding, that means I would submit the DOI right after moving to WA, and then again before 9/15? Just asking for clarification..thank you for the video!
My daughter is in 8th grade and has been in public school her entire life. I need to withdraw her very soon, the environment is not ideal. I reside in king county kent. I am a sahm the past year, so this homeschooling is new to me. In your opinion what is the best home school curriculum for our situation? I was looking into private online Christian school ( ignite academy) or at home curriculum like monarch, Abeka… Very overwhelming of the many option with the combined lack of experience on my part. Thanks
This would be the simplest of the programs you mentioned. I would say that you would probably want to supplement a bit more with this. I honestly would not go with online Abeka as a full time curriculum. That would be completely overwhelming. That one is A LOT and as a new homeschooling family, it would be hard to know what to cut. Honestly, though I have not used it before, I would go with monarch in your situation (it seems to be the most comprehensive without being overwhelming). Or, if your child has some school trauma and needs a lighter load for a bit, you could give Miacademy a try. All in all, do look into deschooling a bit too. Are we entitled to a copy of our students transcripts (Do they do transcripts in 3rd grade?) at their schools? Or keeping report card and IEP records good enough?
Hi, there. What version or method of end of year testing do you use? I ordered testing from a company and that testing was done at home. My dd is entering 7 grade so I'd like to change it up
I pulled my daughter out of public school 3 weeks ago and started homeschooling. Unfortunately, I don’t have a high school diploma but am going to school for my diploma. My daughter is 7 but will be 8 in July. Is it still possible for me to teach her as I’m still getting my diploma the same time?
I think the best thing for you to do is sign up for the homeschooling course. As long as you have signed up and intend to take the class, you are ok. I have heard it’s a really great course for anyone homeschooling to take. So totally worth it. Do you have a husband who happens to have some college classes? That would cover the requirements as well.
Hello :) so basically, before submitting an intent to homeschool, I’m good to go if I am almost done with community college? (Meaning I have lots of credits & they don’t have to be specific to teaching degrees?) I won’t need to find someone from the school district to watch over us, and I don’t have to take the homeschooling course? I’m good to go as is?
Hey, I know it has been almost a year, but I’m commenting in hopes the questioner might see this if she took this advise because it is incorrect. Online-only/out-of-state private schools like Abeka Academy are NOT considered valid schools to meet the compulsory attendance law in WA. If you choose to use something like Abeka Academy you must be following all parts of the homeschool laws in WA (qualify, declare, test/assess, etc) as such programs are seen by WA as merely a curriculum choice like at other. If your child is age 8+, and you are using Abeka Academy without having legally filed as a homeschooler then your child is legally truant from public school and you are subject to prosecution as such.

I believe so, but in order to be 100% sure, contact the Washington Homeschool Organization. They are our homeschool law supporters and know all the answers to questions like that. But I really think it doesn’t matter where you do continuing ed… just that you did. A tech school should be fine. Also, you can ask in some WA facebook groups. Someone is sure to have experience with that
Yah... thankfully, anyone CAN qualify to do so, but there is a bit of a process for some. I'm honestly just thankful it's not illegal to homeschool here like in some countries in Europe.
Nope. They don't have to be vaccinated... You have to keep their vaccination records. Meaning, if they have them, you need to have them and if they don't, then that is your record as well.
