Some information that might be useful on this subject. Some VCRs don't make good RF modulators as the macro vision copy protection can cause trouble even if you not using the VCR to record. This not very common but I have had a few VCRs that I hooked a DVD player into for the RF output. The symptoms are the picture will go from normal brightness to very dark every few seconds and on some machines it will lose color and vertical hold. So not all VCRs are good as an RF modulator for macro vision protected media. Here are the VCRs I know for certain that give trouble (I don't have these machines anymore so I can't give the model number of them). The VCRs are Orion built VCRs from around the late 80s. mine was an Emerson from 1987 and funai built VCRs from around the year 2000.

That's a very good point I completely forgot to mention. Macrovision messes with the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) circuitry that is used when recording to tape. Some VCRs were immune to it, but most had the issues you describe. I've also found that some VCRs only exhibited the Macrovision problems when in record mode. I had a late 90s GE (Samsung mechanism I think) that did this.

I’ve always thought of it as a beautiful symphony. The amount of thought and engineering that went into ensuring backward compatibility of a analogue signals was incredible, and always impressed me. I bought my first Panasonic (or National as it was back then) in 1982, and yes, it has BNC video connectors (I still have it in 2024), so I’ve lived through all this. The VCR cost me AU$1,099 in 1982. My first ever big purchase after leaving school, and getting a full time job.

I grew up in the analog TV world... watched and learned about colour burst when colour TVs firste appeared, right through to modern encrypted-digital signals. I've repaired lots of analog TVs, cameral and monotols, and have had more than a few suprise figh-voltage zaps while tweaking analog circuitry while watching the CRT in a mirror. I watched this video to see a modern youtuber's understanding of old analog TV, and was pleasantly surprised by what I saw! Nicely done! You sure took me back. BTV, I had some old Archer analog effects generators similar to the item you showed. They were considered pretty cool back in the day.

This came out at a perfect time! I just received an RCA 19 or 20 Inch Colortrak TV from 1988 (luckily it has Coax and Composite Stereo). It's been sitting in storage for 9 years, I connected a VCR by Composite and it looked really sharp and colorful as it should! I forgot how good VHS tapes look on a CRT TV after watching them on HDTVs for 6 years straight LOL! The sound kinda works, the right speaker is a no-go and the left speaker works but it gets crackly at bassy parts so I try to keep the bass setting close to center if possible. Used to sound better than Bose speakers LOL😂 Haven't looked at the innards of it yet, so I haven't figured it out. It has a digital tuner like your RCA TV that you showed. Only thing I need a Matching Transformer is for an Electra branded 8-Track / Radio unit for the FM Radio that I also received from the same person. Great video as always!😁👌

Hello and thanks for your interesting video; In Iran (Middle East and probably Europe) VHF was 2 to 12 and UHF was 21 to 69. Until the early 90s in Iran, many people had televisions that did not have the UHF band. For this reason, the first box that was placed next to the televisions; The external UHF Channel boxes. I will make a video of these UHF mobile channels and post it on my channel. Thanks again.

The logo on that TV at the start of the video is a lot like Atari, but with a slight twist. All the basic prinicples are exactly the same as in Yurp, but ever so slightly different. The coax connector is still a coax, but ever so slightly different. Makes it so wonderfully surreal to watch, because everything is as it should be, but it is just different. Ever so slightly. Very well done tutorial video for anyone who needs to connect a VHF/UHF TV to anything else.

Dude! You gotta do a DIY UHF /VHF broadcast from video source onto these old TV how to. I got an RF modulator and it’s quite easy to get it hooked up. There definitely isn’t a lot of detailed videos on how to actually broadcast OTA within your home. You content creators are missing out on this subject.
@probnotstech
@probnotstech Год назад
I'm a content creator? Neat! :D Regarding transmitting over the air, it gets a little hairy. Legally you can under a certain wattage, but putting together a DIY transmitter means that gets difficult to certify. I know people have taken an output from a VCR or RF modulator, run it through a few signal boosters and then connected a set of antennas. Or used a commercial Agile Modulator connected to antennas. But both those are probably over the allowed transmitting power, so it's not something I want to go recommending in a video then getting someone in trouble. 12voltvids did a video about a "Video Sender" that used to be sold back in the day. It's a low power UHF transmitter, and I still see them show up from time to time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u5-h5MVontk.html Also, maritimegirl did a video on using signal boosters as I mentioned earlier: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kqetXGthMyw.html

@@probnotstech it’s quite hard to get rabbit ears dipole antennas here in Tokyo… I’m seeing a lot more extendable ham radio antennas. I think my previous antenna was for the higher UHF range… so you know what the actual VHF frequency range rabbit ear antennas are… I’m aiming for the old vintage TV’s like your videos.

The martimegirl video really helped thanks for sharing that link! My issue was that the boated antenna type I had was built it… hence your not able to reverse the direction of the booster. Have a booster as separate unit to the antenna was the answer!

Just discovered this channel ! Incredible videos - especially the full house closed loop cable network. I have an old small CRT at home I like to use as a nostalgia window (watching older than shows) I wish simple devices such as chromecasts had a 4/3 mode to be used easily with older sets. I know you can use a computer but it’s more cumbersome.

I use an a Sony Trinitron KV1925R tv from 1985 and I have a Zenith side loading VCR VR1830. the RF out cable from the VCR goes into the input of a radio shack RF modulator which I have an older Sony blue ray player that has composite output still and has been very reliable as it has tons of use and still works as good as the day I got for Christmas in 2012. On the rf input of the VCR I have my Sega Genesis connected up to with the factory RF adapter. I do have a Roku streaming stick connected to a composite adapter which I connect up when I need it which is rare. As I have 1700+ in DVDs and blue-rays and about 600+ VHS tapes so I hardly ever use the Roku but I have it for the rare occasion.

Can two twin leads be on one VHF connection? Like say hooking up two old consoles onto the same TV sharing that single twin lead connection on the back.
@probnotstech
@probnotstech Год назад
Sort of, but it will cause an impedance mismatch, since they would be connected in parallel. I'm not sure how that will affect the signal, but you'll probably get more interference . When you see coax splitters, they actually have a small transformer type circuity inside to "match" the same impedance on all the connections.

I am using a matching transformer and a av to rf modulator and all I'm getting is sound, no video. I know the setup works because I tried it on a newer TV without the matching transformer and just plugging in the coax and it works fine. I'm plugged into VHF and I've tried fine tuning to no avail, it's just a squiggly fuzzy mess. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! 🙏
@probnotstech
@probnotstech 2 месяца назад
Does the fine tuning have any effect at all? It could be that old components in the TV (usually capacitors) drifted and caused the tuning to be off. Even so, you should be able to get some sort of picture by adjusting the fine tuning.

I didn't get into PAL because I don't have much experience with it, and there are quire a few differences. PAL countries used different RF connectors, different channels ranges and frequencies (UHF for modulators, for example) and BNC for composite instead of RCA. Also PAL countries had the SCART adapter that seems really neat, and included RGB which was unheard of over here.
