If you just click "X" to close the server you will loose all progress since the last world save. The proper way to close the server is typing "quit" on the window prompt. It will save the world and close the server.
Just replaced my gaming PC, my old rig easily function as a server. I really hate relying on Nitrado's terrible business practices to host my wife's Patron server for her Ark YT channel. I don't know if I want to rely on hosting it myself for our community, but I am glad to have the option. I will making this video rewatch later if I end up doing it. Thanks!
I think the server might not be as power-hungry as initially thought (at least, not for small groups), as I just tested it on my 4-year-old laptop (i7-9750H with 16GB RAM) and I was able to play on the same machine while hosting, AND I had a "second player" join via Xbox (it was me, lol). It was only a 5-minute test, but I did use the fly command to zoom around a bit and there were no issues at all (besides being killed by compies while I was switching between PC and Xbox to find the other character, lol). Further testing may be required to see how it handles with extra tames, bases, etc.
Your live streams look so good, could you please do a vid or even a short where you run through your settings/console commands? I want my game to look like your game.
A bunch of those settings in the server config of the wiki that had a question mark have been updated. I've been testing and updating them the last 2 days, updated at least 5 of those by now.
So the new update you can’t see anybody’s server if it’s made by players, you gotta click show player server and it doesn’t stay click every time turn the game off and on you gotta re-click it to find the server
I was losing my mind, thank you ton. I was searching high and wide to see what changed and I found it. To extend it further, also turn off the PC-Only option. I didn't need to do that before but after the latest update 17/12/23 I do. Thank you thank you thank you.
In the ASA Terminal, you type in exit and it will close the server and save the game at the same time. I closed the ASA terminal by clicking the x button on the top right and it never saved the game progression. Just an FYI.
The way I've been doing the .ini stuff is set up a single play world and use the sliders, then copy it from the .ini file to the servers .ini file, you just have to make sure its under the right header then
If you don’t mind me asking, what is obelisk? Is it like ASE where you could host a dedicated server from the game? The reason I ask is I’m still screwed for hosting a dedicated server for my Xbox even though I have a strong enough PC because I can’t port forward with starlink but with ASE I could by hosting in game.
Neddy this video is super helpful! The only thing I'm wondering is how major are the differences if you have a dedicated machine for running the server? Will I still have to be linked through my own steam account for example?
I suspect you probably know this by now, but I'll reply in case it helps others: No, you do not need to use ANY credentials to run the dedicated server.
I play on PS5 and looking to host my own server when I just play with my freinds instead of doing non-dedicated (when asa comes out). I hope this works for ps thanks to crossplay (I also have a computer).
When I make the folder start servers I get "this app can't run on your pc To find a version for ur pc check with the software publisher " plzz help someone
@starsgaming9343 I figured it out. If you go back and launch the steam.cmd and then login to steam anonymously again and then do add_update 2340930 it should update to the current version. Double check the video to make sure that number is right, but that's the jist of it.
Hi Neddy, Super helpful video as always, thanks for sharing. I know I wont be the only one thinking of this but, How does the mod function work for the server? if we want to run a particular mod say cryopods or upgrade station... Do you know how we would install the mod on the server and how would we update it? Thanks in advance and also - Thanks for everything you do :)
I recommend using the same server install and running 2 different batch files. Just make sure they have different Ports, Query Ports and session names, but they MUST have the same cluster ID (make this unique to your cluster, otherwise it will try to cluster with other servers using the same ID).
Great video thank you very much. It may be worth adding a comment at the bat creation stage that installing visual C is required. If you do not have visual C installed you will get a .dll error
I wish I had an extra PC lying around so I could do this. Playing singleplayer in Ascended has a weird stutter bug, where every second the game freezes for like half a second. It's not gamebreaking, but it is SUPER frustrating. FPS is fine. It's just the stutter. But to play on a server I'd either have to buy a whole new computer, as mine is not good enough to host and play on a server at the same time, or waste money paying for a server for ONLY me to play on, as I don't have any friends I want to play with, and I don't like playing with strangers.
An easy way to get a working game.ini that I did for my server is to make a single player game with the settings I wanted and just copied the ini that generated into my server. After that its a matter of tweaking and fine tuning the settings to suit your needs there.
They make those parameters unable to use, so nitrado can charge you money for them. Nitrado was given the exclusive rights for servers for ASA, by Wildcard. :(((
K someone tell me if i'm stupid but i thought you could just start a non-dedicated server through the in-game menu....? when you start the game, theres the Play/Join game option, and you can switch a save file between "Single Player" and "Host Server" (or something along those lines) options. When doing so, the pause button no longer pauses the game, you have access to ALL the admin commands, etc. From the little time i spent in it, it sure felt like it legit switched from single to multiplayer....How is that different? I'm not being rhetorical or a smartass either, i legitimately know next to nothing about servers and am curious what the difference in. This stuff all seems like a LOT of extra work for the casual player just wanting to play with a couple buddies
A dedicated server is an encapsulated process, completely detached from the game client(s). When the player of a non-dedicated session has a crash, for example, the "server" is gone too. That's not the case with dedicated ones - they are MUCH more stable. They are also much easier to keep running when you're not actively playing. No graphics to render etc. It's basically just as the name implies: "Dedicated".
okay so what Noodle is covering here is a Dedicated server, that is independent of any one player's PC and can be accessed by any member at any time, rather than having to have one person leave their PC turned on 24/7 (non-dedicated), am I understanding that correctly? where what I was referencing above, that you can turn on through the in-game menu, is a non-dedicated server that would result in other people only being able to play while my PC is turned on with the game running @@Ferodra
There are non-technical differences between dedicated and non-dedicated, or at least one major difference. Non-dedicated servers force tethering between the host and any other players. Furthermore, this tethering is currently broken. So right now all players must stay within approx 180m of the host, otherwise they get teleported or dragged towards the host. Once tethering is fixed, it should function similar to ASE, and allow you to change the tether range to a very large number, but the tethering still forces the teleport if you approach/enter a cave system. This is very disruptive to standard gameplay and can be somewhat game-breaking. If a group is far from home and someone dies, they just get teleported over by the tethering, which removes the whole walk-back. It's like the devs forcing a cheesy strat that players can use/abuse. Also, because the non-dedicated server shuts down instantly if the host crashes, no proper game save is performed during the crash, resulting in potentially significant rollbacks. I changed the save frequency to 5 minutes in the game files but it appears to ignore that setting. It defaults to 15 minutes, but I'll be honest it often feels like MUCH more progress than that gets lost. I'm not convinced that setting is working correctly either.
@@MarEvayave This is and has been because arks map checkpoint, which where unchanged from the island when porting the heighmap to UE5 (not specifically talking about the landscape but the general areas of the map in code for the island) since ASE some of that saving and progression depended on where you where and if the last save encapsulated specific areas, this coming from experience, as a game analyst that as a player ran its own server for friends and also had tried for many years the non dedicated version, in my experience the reason it doesnt save is because there is a delay in the areas for what other players do from what the host does, therefore a save only encapsulates very temperamental files for instance if you where taming a creature and that tame belonged to a friend non host this could cause the server not to save that in the next save and wait until another pass to save that info into the file type of the save, specially if said tameing was far from the host, this is the reason of the thethering in original ASE that original distance of 200 was to avoid this kind of issues, in UE5 however this should not exist as is, we will ahve to see if they change the non dedicated tethering when fixed
I think I did everything right but when I go to run the startserver.bat it doesn't do anything or run it. Then I run it as administrator and a error pops up saying-> windows cannot find 'ArkAscendedServer'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again
I was able to create the server and play for about two days but now when I load the server I am not able to find it.. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?
I'm currently looking at coding a very simple GUI to cut out alot of this out to help people who are not so familiar with this. I may need some help in regards to testing it?
I really wished you explained how to actaully port forward because I can't seem to get it working everything else worked I just can't get anyone outside the network to join
Hello! Thanks a lot for the guide, its great! I do have a question though regarding modded dinos.. I have added few modded dino IDs as also others items, and while everything is working correct, the modded dinos do not spawn what so ever. I tried i think everything till now (destroywilddinos command etc) but nothing seems to spawn them on a private server. I play from ps5 and from xbox SX, and in signle player those mods work just fine... and idea what could causing the dino mods to not spawn on the private server?
Question, when I make the start up Bat file and use it for starting the server, does it update too? How do I make sure that it updates? Hope this isn't a dumb question....?
Everyone I see showing how to do this is always putting it on the same computer that they run the game on to play I want to know if it's possible to put it on a different computer that you don't play on without having to buy a whole another copy of the game
What I did is for the 2nd PC running the server, I toggled my Steam account to OFFLINE mode, and run the dedicated server, while on my gaming PC I am online on Steam and launch the game. It works splendidly
@@NeddyTheNoodle Awesome. My plan is build a pc out of my old xbox one. and use it as a server. im tracking down all the parts and trying to figure out how to use the xbox power brick because my house has power issues and fries psu's if you dont run a ups. but ive never had psu issue with the xbone
Hi i used this method and it worked perfectly for a couple of days now i am on a more recent version of ark and my friends arent and it doesnt let me change the server version how can i?
I have port forwarded and can only join the server I have running on a laptop on my main PC. I cannot join through GeForce Now on the same Wifi and my friend on Xbox cannot join. I’m very confused
Hey man appreciate the video. I actually set up my own server like this on my PC so me and my friends on Xbox can play together. The PC is strictly for the server as I’m playing on the Series X, however I can’t figure out how to make myself an admin. Do you know how I can do that? Thanks in advance!
@@Immortal_Tyrant i still havent.. I redid the whole dam script of code and it fucking reset my server and i had to start all over.. Makes me sad and i cant figure out how to save a backup file nothing works right.
When you have time could you please show how to update the dedicated server I have been running a server since launch on my own pc and for the longest time no matter what I did the server would not update at all, i had to uninstall steamcmd and re-download everything to get the update, if you could show the proper way to update it that would be fantastic! Thank you very much for making this video!
Does this work for those who play on Xbox/PS/Windows version? I see a lot of questions in the comments asking this question. I'm sure nobody would want to do this to find out it doesn't work if they're doing it for Xbox/PS/Windows version. Please shed some light on us. Edit: I can confirm that this does work for XBOX/PS/Windows
Hi! The video is incredible, and I have set up my server, opened the ports on my router, and everything, but I can't find my server when I enter the game, and I don't know why. I've been trying for 2 days. Can someone help me?
Hi i have a problem. The window of the server's console is locked outside of 2nd monitor, i can see it just slightly. I can't move it and Win + UP doesn't work. How can i make it so i see the console
Hey there cracking video. I have pc that I was looking at setting something like this up however I don't wanna play on pc I have ps5 I play on. So could i set up on my pc the server and then play it on my PS5 . Also could my friends who live elsewhere play on it too. ????
@SpoiledChocoMLF did you have to port forward to be able to use your ps5, I got svr active on pc says platform windows on the screen, im trying to play with an Xbox to a pc?.
hello, sorry I'm searching and can't find this problem I'm having.. after the last update I can't place items of mods, for example the traps of randy's animal trap. I go to place them but they disappear; I see the green image but it doesn't construct. somebody knows about this? thank you
It worked for a while but then about 10hrs in the game crashed and no one is able to join back in anymore. It says theres a connection timeout. Any solutions to it?
I did all the steps correctly but when it gets to the running part, the server doesn't enter, it gives a message saying that the time to access has expired, is it because I'm trying to access via Playstation 5?
When i try to transfer character to one of my cluster's map i get Host timed out , when i reconnect my character is there but i would like to be able to transfer without being disconnected everytime . Does someone know where its coming from ?
I got a range of errors relateing to missing .dll files I've fixed those issues by just downloading them and copying them to the folder but now I'm getting the error "Windows cannot find 'ArkAscendedServer.exe'. Make sure you've typed the name correctly, then try again." I can see that .exe in the folder, how can I fix this?
So, I am confused... You have the Xbox logo in the thumbnail for the video... As far as I know Xbox and Steam are NOT crossplay? So how does this work exactly. I was trying to set my PC up using the Xbox Gamepass PC version. But the video has you download SteamCMD? Does this work for people playing the game through the Xbox gamepass version or not? PS - I am on PC, but several people I am trying to set this up for are on the Xbox console.
Same, I play on PC but my friends play on Xbox. There seems to be no clarification on whether this works for Xbox and if it doesn't the preview is misleading. I did see that on his ark game there was a box that says PC only* for server searching that you can check which I assume indicates that it's cross-play cause if it was just the steam version why would it even have a PC only option? 😵 I guess the only real way to see if it works on Xbox is to just do it. What's the worst that can happen?
