Ive been suspecting my Cat being the issue, this video will help me make a solid diagnosis. just keep doing what you do. don't worry about how many subscribers you have now, the more you put out the more will come. stay consistent and dont quit. the world needs RU-vid Professors like you!
Had 6 codes cleared them all, changed the oil, transmission fluid, spark plugs, air intake, cleaned egr, changed the evap cleaned all the stuck carbon out of the manifold including removing the sensor and cleaning that port out as well. Test drove a million times and still the same issue and no check engine light and I almost lost my mind until I watched this. Even though I havent done it yet, I know this is my problem through your explanation that ive been looking for over 22 web pages. Great job and thank alot for the help. Subscribed!
@@MuscleCarMike it actually turned out to be a bad bearing in my transmission so I had to get a new one. But hey, after doing all that work feel like I got a brand new car! 🤷🏾♂️💯
Man I went through the same. This is on my 2005 buick lesabre. Fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, wires, coils, fuel injectors, egr valve, mass air flow sensor, upstream and downstream o2 sensors, battery, alternator, and lastly the valve cover gasket(just needed it) I'm trying one last thing before I replace the entire exhaust (rockauto $360) and that's the fuel pressure regulator. Before any of that I'm going to loosen the exhaust manifold and just see because of this video. Problem is the random misfire code and flashing check engine light...
This dude reminds me of my old Boss Hogan. I went to work for him right after I got out of college for mechanics. I went in already having been fixing vehicles for friends and myself, didn't learn as much as I hoped (especially after the money) but I learned SOOO much from Hogan so quickly. Seriously, when I say reminds, I mean basically is. They even look similar. I hope he is doing well, haven't talked to him in many years. Guy took me in like family.
Keep posting videos like this one! Diagnosing problems the on cars can be harder than the actual work sometimes. All your videos should be "How to idenitfy a bad ...." in my opinion or at least have a playlist of the most common problems. Looks like your going to pass 130k on this one and from the looks of it your other videos don't have many views. Stick with what's working and you'll get there. Great job on this one!
Glad I found this video, bought a 2001 Ford ranger 3.0 v6 a month ago & notice it’s mighty quite & when I try to floor it , does that same as that 4Runner
Thanks so much. My car has the same exact issue. Two places told me I need a new transmission. But the trans shop I went to today said it's an exhaust issue and you are confirming that. Subscribed !
Thank you so much! This helped me figure out whats wrong with my car after multiple mechanics couldn't find anything since I have no codes. We need more like you!
It's look very easy isn't it but taking many people to figure out and some people still don't have a clues what's going on. Lol 😆 🤣 now please help me subscribe to my channel ok 👍 thanks
YO I am so thankful you made this video I’m driving a 2017 dodge journey with no check engine light on and I’ve change the spark plugs boots and oil change even had my o2 censors be replaced and it still did this and is still doing it now finally I have something to show to the mechanic to give them a better understanding thank you so DAMN much fr fr These dodge journeys have all types of issues I swear smh
Thats great analysis. I suspect the same in my Camry 2005. It's blowing a lot of air from oil cap, and it sounds like exhaust when I open the oil cap in the valve cover. No smoke, no check engine light, PCV valve and hose are new. There was an exhaust leak just before the cat converter, and I just repaired that leak. I didn't check the oil cap before fixing the exhaust leak, but my guess is that engine is not able to breath from exhaust, and as a result the pressure is building up inside the engine, and releases any where it can. In this case it's the valve cover. I also noticed that in idle if I cover the exhaust tail pipe by hand, the engine does not die or even struggle. Unfortunately I cannot disconnect my exhaust easily. Someone removed the flange and welded it to the pipe permanently. Thanks for sharing your analysis. Subscribed.
My man, thanks a bunch. You've helped me confirm my suspicion with my 3v Mustang GT. No jerking or struggling while accelerating, but definitely, like you said, very little air coming out the exhausts (almost no air at all). I also run a burble/popcorn tune, so, yeh...Plus orange hot cats when climbing around the mountains. Plus bad smell especially on cold start and all the time basically. I've also got an up and down idle but I believe that's because of a bad water pump? Lots of evidence of coolant coming out from below the pump. Haven't done any vacuum leak tests though. Thanks again for the awesome video.
I have a problem with mine that I'm thinking is cat it almost seems like the timing is off one side must be clogged pretty bad bc I have misfires on one hole side of the engine
Thank you so much for making this video. I have a 99 Jimmy and it is acting just as you described. I have to push it and push it to maintain 100 km on the freeway. Yesterday, initially, I barely made it over a hill close to home. I had it floored and would hardly go over maybe about 20 mph. I was thinking maybe a problem with the injectors but after watching your video I am convinced it is most likely a clogged cat. Maybe debris from the cat has also travelled farther down steam and possibly caused a blockage in the muffler too. I have a scan tool the reads live data so I can also check the O2 sensors and I will purchase a new vacuum gauge also so I can see how the engine is breathing. Like you said that it is like trying to run with your hand over your mouth. ( I had a vacuum gauge but it is missing in action. ) Thank you so much and I am now SUBSCRIBED!!
This is what's happening to my car, I have a 2003 mazda protege. People say it was my transmission, ot turned out to be the catalytic converter. Thank you for this video👍
This video helped a lot. All we could think about when we faced the same problem was a malfunctioning ECM but in that case there should be a check engine light or something. This is the last option we are left with. Will try this! Thank you.
@@savyj6569 Hey sry I didn’t check my notifications. We took the car to a local mechanic shop and he asked us to keep the car at his place for a day so that he can check it properly and let us know what’s wrong with it.. The next day he called and said, there’s something wrong with some sort of sensor in the car. I don’t remember what what he said exactly but all I could figure out was the sensor is not allowing the car to exceed 80kmph. ( Sensor in the left wheel works fine but the one in the right wheel has some issues)
@@savyj6569 I visited this mechanic on 21st December and he said he’ll order a brand new part as a replacement for the worn out part, he hasn’t called back yet and Everytime I ask, has the part arrived he either says no or doesn’t pick up the call.
@@savyj6569 I’m thinking about visiting another mechanic and asking him directly to clean the clogged cat converter. I’m literally fed up of this issue.
just the other day i had a 1991 chevy s10 with the 4.3l v6, no fire up condition they brought me a timing set told me to change it.. first thing i checked the timing it was perfect! so i checked for fuel, had fuel. no spark, i told the customer about it. had him take the coil pack to oreillys tested good, so when he came back i had taken the ICM out of the distributor had him test it. and it failed!, put a new one in and she fired right up!! happiest customer i have had in a loooong time!! saved him alot of money!
laser temp reader. They're like $20 and if the cat is plugged it's hotter upstream (closer to the engine) than it is downstream. When a cat works properly it should be hotter downstream. I dumped sea foam into mine after removing the upstream O2 sensor into the cat and it cleaned it up.
Nice video! I think the cat is my problem with my 4runner too! Replaced the clutch components but the car was still low on power. Hoping for more videos from you!
The very hot exhaust coming out of my truck is what lead me to pulling the catalytic converters off and I did find that the front cat is clogged. Now I need to find a way of cleaning it! Great video. Thanks for sharing.
A very good test for sure right on mr good video I will be checking your channel because it's worth looking at and listening to you explain it good job
Car having hard time going over 2 rpm. I checked plugs, air filter and other basics. Nothing. I removed upstream sensor from catalytic converter. Car went to 4 and 5 rpms no problem. It seems last place to check is where the problem starts. Now I'm going in right direction. Thanks for your video and time.
Had the same problem on my 03 impala. Was throwing codes that made no sense and even clearing them while backfiring and no power. Super hot out the exhaust with no air coming out. Drove 1000miles and barley made it to my destination. Replaced it and "WOW"
Thank you for your time. i replaced a clogged cat 4 years ago and today i just noticed the loss of power symptom im using an aftermarket one and i guess it is clogging again.
THANK you, having problems getting up to speed and car jerks like crazy, replaced 02 sensor spark plugs snd TPS problem still there, i noticed the exhaust gas was extremely hot as well! and it comes out all sputtering inconsistent and not smooth, aftermarket cat as well, taking it tomorrow to get checked
Bro perfect description or explanation.. i was also having this problem n some sound (like a metal contact) from silencer too due to this cat issues.. all resolved now. Thx. I paid C$750/- including installation too..
this was exactly what i needed. i removed my cat and drove like a charm. i was so close giving up because i did everything from new plugs and new coil packs and new valve cover gasket and tube seals and nothing worked. thank you!
@@XxXGBatXxX my car engine is whining like i was towing something heavy, i thought my brake was binding. Now I'm thinking it's the cat, but it's only 4 y/o.
Wow, Excellent Video Very Informative. You just helped me figure out what was wrong with my 2009 Nissan Altima! Thanks again brother and keep up doing great videos! Bravo 👏🏻
My 2003 Dodge Caravan with 158,000 miles, got P0420 code. Lugs bad on grades. Barely making it up losing speed from 40 to 25 mph by the summit. Runs fine on the level. But runs hotter than usual but not overheating. Replacing cat tomorrow.
That’s exactly what my Camaro is doing now it’s hardly going 3,000 rpm’s so I’m gunna take my catalytic converter off because it’s bad to honeycombs in it broke all up I need a new one. Thx for your video 👍🏻
Backyard mechanic way to tell if it's the CC. Pull the O2 sensor out of your down pipe near the exhaust manifold and if the car goes from running rough to normaling out when you pull that O2 sensor out, you know it's the catalytic converter. A bad CC isn't absorbing emissions and is forcing back pressure back up into the engine. Pulling that O2 sensor allows that pressure to escape out of that O2 port. If you can afford it, take it to a mechanic and they can pull the engine computer data and it'll take them about 5 mins to diagnose it.
Well....in my case: 2000 camry V6. Light on for 420 code all kinds of power. 3 O2 sensors and 3 cats later 2500$. Bc the mechanic could not diagnose it the first time so he ended up replacing everything. Stay away from Toyota especially with California emissions.
@@bryan_trades8867 honestly could be either. I had the same code and changed the upstream sensor, then after changing it and clearing the code. I had a different code pop up for the catalytic inefficiency on the down stream sensor. The CEL reading should tell you which bank it’s coming from, but in your case(v6) I believe you have at least 3 02 sensors if I’m not mistaken.
Mine is also 21 yrs old haha I was like 4 years old when It was first registered 😂 but I'd rather buy a car cash than take one from the bank... Oh yes mine has 211 000 on the clock. My car is doing this same thing, I thought it was spark plugs because of the low power, but they were fine. Because of the sound I figured to check the exhaust system. And possible CC problem. Thank you for making this video!!!
I love this guy! Thank you I think this is my issue. Fuel+air+spark=running engine. I’ve changed my plugs, coil pack, fuel filter, I’m running injector cleaner, the truck shifts fine. There gotta be two issues… I’m sure more but, it’s either a bad cat, or a bad fuel pump.
Update : this video helped me diagnose and fix my 2013 Acura TL SH-AWD V6 which had no check engine light, and a sudden loss of power above 3500 rpm. One of the catalytic convertors was clogged due to broken catalyst bits stuck in the exhaust mid pipe. Pulled out the pieces and it runs like a top again. Thank you very much 😊
Wow 2013 already have this type of problem. Could be made in China part lol 😂😂😂 glad you found this video thanks for watching and don't forget to help me subscribe 😊
@@alltsab actually it was the original 3rd catalytic convertor ( which luckily isn't monitored so no check engine light from gutting it either! )But the car has 163,000 miles and burns some oil which I think killed it quicker. The acura J37 v6's have oil consumption issues unfortunately.
@@LeoM-zt3ploh I can see that. Even though poor gas also killing the cat. Converter too. from 2010 and above seem like many Japanese made vehicles have consumption oil a lot. Toyota 4 cylinder is terrible.
Bro you just saved an f150!!!! I thought it was my differential but it does the exact same thing, I'm gonna get that serviced and ill be on my way. THANKS
Bought a Grand Cherokee from a shop who had replaced several parts while "troubleshooting" this problem. Paid $800, drove it home and sawsalled the bad cat and installed straightpipe. Good to go.
Wow, it explains alot, I was thinking the same changing out everything spark plugs, engine, oil change etc.., thanks to your video , no engine light on and no speed above 40 on freeway, well hopefully I get this fixed soon. And yes I liked and subscribed because it explained alot👍🏼
If this helped what did you do to keep your car running better? Did you simply loosen the catalytic converter like in the video and left it that way????????
I'm having problem with that too. Even I have check engine light on,I diagnosed it(OBD2) and it's said something about cat from under (catalytic converter sensor),not front catalytic close to engine then I ignored it. I don't even know what front catalytic does. I noticed my car jerking while I accelerate like it making me feel that it was low motor oil and I changed it myself. My mpg burned fast than normal. It won't go up to 40 per hrs. I thought it was transmission worn out because of 300k. I went to mechanical(near house). He tested drive it and floor the gas like why it got loud on the hood, he said that my front catalytic is clogged. I started to understand why my OBD2 trying to warn me but it did not say anything about front catalytic . I never knew front catalytic have honeycomb as filter to prevent harm dirty gas in my life. Only under car catalytic pipe I only heard since I took care of my car.
Will a bad Catalytic converter make my truck stall when pressing the gas? Loss of power, I also hear a ticking noise from under floorboard by my feet. If I let it cool when it stops it will start again but die about every 3 miles. I have a 1978 Chevrolet c10 truck. I have checked it for a cracked cylinder head it does not have that?
I wish I would have seen this video two months ago, I did change all those things. Including camshaft, rollers, injector ,were sideways only running on seven cylinders. Blown head gasket. And still truck doesn't run. Mechanic finally told me it's probably the catalytic converter.
I change my o2 sensor since that’s the codes that were being thrown. A day later I get on the highway and my truck starts doing the same was this truck, couldn’t go over 45 mph seemed like to wanted to shut off. Exhaust smells different and when I started it this bring back stuff shot out.
Thanks for the video!! I thought my camshaft sensors were the issue with my car as it was jerking and fault code I got was p0340. But issue still the same so I will go ahead and clean out my cat converter. :) thanks for the video!!
They clog up more when you only drive short distances . Every now and then I put a bottle of cat cleaner in the fuel tank and go for a 50 mile drive , driving at high revs , and down one gear.
You can test it with a back pressure gauge . There is also a test with a vacuum gauge . If you have a very advanced scan tool , there is a volumetric efficiency test . Otherwise , disconnect it and drive it to test .
@@gabrielsierra6890 I believe you put the gauge on a MANIFOLD vacuum line . Use the brake booster . Raise the RPM up to about 2000 . Instead of stabilizing to about 17 - 22 lbs. , it is much lower because it is restricted and not breathing . It could be a clogged CAT or exhaust . Make sure the air filter isn't clogged . The engine is an air pump . Air goes in and has to go out . I think there are a few videos on You Tube . A back pressure gauge goes into the front O2 hole . That is measuring the back pressure in the exhaust system . You also can remove the front O2 and find the car improves because you are allowing the back pressure to escape . If dual exhaust , remove both O2's or test one at a time .
Well said sir, my car got same problem but Machanic changed spark plug, o2 sensor no use then change transmission, NO use ( I spend lots of money) Finally my friend drove the car and told me it’s catalytic converters problem. Don’t go private Machanic’s all r making only money 💰
It could be an air filter clogged too. Not in your case, but the symptoms. I also have had the same symptoms in the past and and the cause turned out to be all of these (not at once): Cat. converter, fuel filter and Mass Air-Flow sensor.
