How to Identify a Rip Current in 1 Minute

It's important to know how to recognize a rip current. If you're lucky, the rip currents will be identified with a sign or marker on the beach.
A rip current is a narrow channel of deeper water that funnels through sandbars on either side. As the waves crash to the shore, the water recedes rapidly through the deeper channel, creating a dangerous current.
In this photo, the first clue are the wave breaks on the left and right sides, created by the sandbars, but no wave breaks in the center, where the rip current is. The shallow water is lighter and the deeper water is darker.
Lets look at this in motion. Again, minimal wave breaks in the center, where the water appears darker.
Closer up, you can see the ripples of the rip current flowing in the opposite direction as the breaking waves. Even in shallow water where kids play, the current can be strong enough to be swept away.
If you are caught in a rip current, don't fight it. Stay calm, conserve your energy, and swim parallel to the shore until you reach shallower water, where you can then swim back to shore.
So be aware of where the rip currents are and know where and where not to swim.

One time as a kid I was at the Pacific Ocean, the water came up to my ankle bone, the next second I was straight on my face in the water! Still on the sand part though!!! It blew me away , all in a split second, no warning! You tell me what a out of no where can do to you!Thank you for posting! A toddler could have had a possible bad outcome!

Amazing that there is a rip with such tiny waves. Probably not a very strong rip but could take a child out.

The tiny waves are the clue that it is a rip. It looks deceptively calm and can pull a man out if he's in waist-deep water.

I go kayaking to the ocean. one time I was practicing my fall and re-entry to the kayak but the water was choppy. as I fell on purpose from my kayak to practice getting back on it, as soon as i tried to reach for it with my hand my kayak was already out of my reach being sweep to the shore in a diagonal angle from me. I saw a friend going towards the kayak to catch it on the shore so I thought OK I guess I just gonna swim back to the shore no problem. Note that I had my LIFE SAVING jacket on as usual like every single time I kayak. as I started swimming in a direct like towards the shore i notice that I was actually moving away from the shore so i stopped and i started floating, sure enough I was being carried away from the shore, at that moment this information that I had studied in a few videos when I started kayaking kicked in and I started swimming parallel side ways. After a few seconds I stopped swimming again to see if I was still being carried out and I wasn't any more I was just floating in the same place. so I started to swim towards the beach and it felt way lighter and easier on my arms as I swam. got the beach in less than a minute. Thank God for my live saving jacket and this knowledge because even with the life saving jacket with out the knowledge i probably would have tried unsuccessfully to keep on swimming inside the rip current until who knows when lol. Stay safe and RESPECT the OCEAN!

The first step that everyone misses: 1) Put your feet down and see if you can stand.
@ChiDraconis
@ChiDraconis 4 года назад
then 2) Do not panic 3) float for ½-minute to see which way it is going; Other than real storm a strong swimmer can likely follow it around to return to shore▬if not able to do that either stay in a pool or in the sand & if do choose to swim use an abbreviated fin for the purpose and flotation devices
@juniorgamboa5236
@juniorgamboa5236 3 года назад
Nobody misses that step, actually is the most common situation. You noticed that you are going deeper into the ocean for some reason, then you try to stand. You realize that you are not able to stand because the rip currents can only exist in the deeper bottom. That's why people get desperate.

How does a swimmer know they're in a rip current? They're frolicking in the ocean for a while and then glance at the shore and everything looks real small. So they try to swim back while the current is pulling them the opposite way and they quickly tire and drown. So as said here they must swim sideways until they are out of it and then can easily come back in.

I was at Hilton Head once and me and my friend were on our rafts. The tide took us out. I was keeping my eye out and man it was literally seconds and we were really far out and yes everything looks smaller. So I got off my raft to touch bottom and I couldn't. I had oil on and couldn't get on my raft. Now the lifeguard came down on his 4-wheeler and there was a crowd. Then I heard someone say get on your raft. Oh never mind it's just a dolphin. I'm thinking, I'll never see the shark it comes up from the bottom. I'm like crap. I look back at my friend and I tell her she needs to get moving and she says I am I am and then I knew and I said do what I do. Instinct took over. I went parallel to the beach. I see this guy in the water with the water up to his neck and it was the life guard and he said I was watching you 2 and you were gone in a couple of seconds. Meanwhile they have this boat cruising the water and I'm thinking and you didn't send the boat because...... That was quite scary and I have to tell you that it was all I could do not to panic because I knew that if I panicked I was dead, that's what would happen if panic set in. The rest of the day me and my gf kept looking at each other like man, we really had a close call.

One second you're waist deep, the next you can't stand... but it's not because the current took you out so quickly. It's because of the underwater channel 😎👉👉

I was at the beach once with my friends, they both went up to the shore “Smart” me decided it would be a good idea to go out deeper on a yellow flag. I got caught up in a rip current, I didn’t realize until my friends were yelling for me to come back, a bigger wave carried my back to shore. I was on a surf board so it was helping me I was all safe in the end! Be careful when your at the beach, you could never know what Would happen, don’t make the same mistake I did!😬

I was once out in the ocean when one started to form right where I was because the tides changed. Luckily I managed to make it out diagonally, but that was one of the scariest thing imaginable. I am a good swimmer and that wasn’t the first time I went upstream but the pull was honestly something I had never experienced before. It was like trying to swim against a waterfall. Luckily there was a little Rock formation in the distance that I could pass so I realized I was actually going forward little by little. Always keep up with the tides guys and only swim in lifeguard secured areas if you don’t know the area.

There are many reasons I would never swim in the ocean again including rip currents, pollution, man o war, jellyfish, flesh eating disease, and other marine life that gets too close to the beach. If I had known about these dangers back in the day I would probably just swam in the hotel swimming pool.

Are rips in exactly the same place every day, or do they keep changing their position?..And if there are lifeguards around, couldn't they plonk a warning sign on the beach when they spot a rip?
@opwave79
@opwave79 2 года назад
It depends on the season and tide. Waves constantly reshape beaches, so a channel that was carved in one month might be in a different position another month. It’s more reliable to look at the waves, especially how they retreat back into the ocean from the sand. A normal wave retreats evenly. But when they criss-cross or flow into a channel that resembles a little creeek in the sand, that’s the beginning of a rip. Avoid going into the water at that position.

Should change that to "don't fight it unless you're a professional swimmer." I got caught in a rip current once. I didn't feel I was in danger, but that was because I didn't know anything about them at the time, let alone that I should swim parallel to shore. I'd know better now, but right then I was in trouble. Thing is, there was a lifeguard. He tossed me a buoy and then not only did he swim directly against the rip current, he did it dragging my fat dead weight. So, an actual serious swimmer may be able to fight a rip current. A guy like me, who knows how to not drown and slowly chunk around in the water but is slow as shit, should not fight the rip current.

... 24 And such people, if you see them starving and throw the rest of your food into the garbage can, you have not sinned because, when God says, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself", He did not mean the devil! [Ed: The congregation says, "Amen!"]. Brothers and sisters, the serpent and the swine are not our neighbours! You see? If Adam and Eve had understood that, things would not be so in Eden! You see? Your neighbour, it is this one who says, "I do want to go to church but I’m addicted to smoking or alcohol drinking"! Your neighbour, it is this little girl who says, "I do want to go to the church but I am unworthy of being a Christian because of my dissolute life, I am too impure!". This is your neighbour. But somebody who transports a bible thinking that by following all that is written in the bible he will go to Heaven, it is a son of the devil; it is a descendant of the serpent and that one is not your neighbour. The Pharisees and the Sadducees, the Zealots, the Essenes were not the neighbours of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Apostles. #ProphetKacouPhilippe
