We would almost would forget how installing drivers in Windows used to require a crafted person. Luckily the mainstream brands have hardware that is detected and installed automatically by Windows 10 update.
I had 5 devices showing up in Device Manager without drivers. 3 said PCI Device, 1 said SM Bus Controller and the last was Unknown. Got rid of 1 PCI Device and the SM Bus with one driver. Your video helped me get rid of the other 3 with one other driver install so THANK YOU!!!

On my Windows 10 Lenovo Ideapad 305 laptop, I have a PCi Encryption/Decryption Controller with the yellow warning icon with it, and ever time I try to update it it crashes and goes to a BSoD. It has no folder as demonstrated in this video. This all happened when I was trying to transfer data from the laptop's drive to a new and fresh SSD. The hardware ID for this PCI is: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0F18&SUBSYS_398617AA&REV_0E Well, that's the first one on the 'Value' list when I changed to Hardware IDs. Any advice on fixing this please Britec? I've had this problem now for a few years and even took it to several repair shops and they couldn't do it.
Thank you very much!! This has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time how hard it is to find an unknown device without iffy third party software. Will check into the program you mentioned too though as you are very trustworthy.

Finally someone explaining snappy driver manager I didn't understand a thing about it, now a little more. Thx I did last years with driver booster never had any problems with it, although 2x it installed an incompatible driver. Gr Ed
You don't have to do this every time. This is only for unknown devices. There's many reasons why a device becomes unknown. Could be an old obsolete piece of hardware. Could be an unbranded or unknown piece of hardware from China. Many many reasons
@@Britec09 I believe the OP meant leaving your desktop window in size and just do it as if you're showing someone in person... I do appreciate the zoomed version you do as it brings more clarity to what you're trying to show for the process.
Suggestion: a " How to"...to remove the 'Printer Name (Copy X)', in the Devices and Printers/Control Panel. All the usual remedies suggested by everyone and their brother never seem to work. It's always 'delete printer', unplug the printer, reboot and plug in the printer, then the Copy Number increments(again)... Thanks.
Ok Brian now if one finds an unknown device before it is un-installed is there a way that it can be identified as to what it does? Because knowing my luck it would be a device that is essential for the computer running. I can see how the device can be described as in that Intel driver - I just want to be sure that I am doing the right thing. In the past, I have used driver update sites and ran into problems, so point taken there.

You never identified the original unknown device. When you checked the details tab, it did not have the VEN and DEV items that you used in your later example. How then, do we find the actual unknown device driver? You side stepped the entire problem that you proposed to solve.
That is very extensive for me when I went in to locate my d disk drive it stated Windows was unable to install your unknown device Can I buy a new disk for this laptop

Think twice if you do a Bios update - the motherboardmakes dont tell all . If you must do the all the bios updates or only the latest bios-since I f I had the oldest motherboard and installed the latest bios (4 years later) - voila dead motherboard - So do bios update carefully and biosupdates can go wrong if you done all correct - Just read all complaints about that bios and updates first
