How to identify an original kalamkari from fake? remember these are handicrafts. Which means Hand made. So look for flaws. look for errors. look for irregularities and imperfections. That is how you identify a handmade product. coming to kalamkari, it is hand-painted(Sri kalahasti)/ block printed (Pedana/Machilipatnam) with natural dyes. Natural dyes are taken from natural sources like leaves, flowers, tree bark, etc so these colors are always subtle and are never too bright. Even the yellows, Reds, Indigo blues...they all are subtle. They would never be loud. So if you ever see a fluorescent yellow or bright pink in a kalamkari, chances are it's not natural which means it's not kalamkari.
To reduce the required time and to make kalamkari cost-effective, some of the artisans are screen printing it instead of hand painting/ block painting. If its screen printed, it's no more a handicraft. printing techniques like screen printing, rotary printing, roller printing are used in industries. not in the handicraft sector. Screen printing, once again, is more perfect compared to block printing. The placement of the motifs, the distance between the motifs, the filling of the color...it's all perfect. whereas in hand printing, you find flaws. That's how you know it's kalamkari.
So it all boils down to one thing. appreciate imperfection. That's the beauty of human touch. That's the beauty of handmade products. the more the customer asks for perfection, the artisans, who are already confused and unsure about the future of the handicraft sector, who are already demoralized being not able to compete with commercial fashion/craft, would compromise on their core values to satisfy the consumer and would create a fake product. Not that they like to. It's just to survive.
