Outstanding teaching. Please reply mam He is better than I. Hindi sentence I is used instead of me. Why mam ? Because me is an object
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher 4 года назад
I is used because it completes the second verb in the clause. He is better than I am. Here 'am' is implied. Me is a pronoun object. If you use me it becomes a simple sentence with one verb. Both are correct.

Verbs: was and is = 2 clauses. Split into 2 sentences. Something is unknown. (the reason) why I was sad. What is unknown? Answer: why i was sad. I could have substituted with (The way to the park) is unknown. How is it adjectival? Is it describing any noun?

Hello Mam, Please look at this sentence: The stage at which cancer is curable is already over. Question: I can deduce that the group of words("at which cancer is curable") is modifying the noun(stage), so the group of words is playing adjectival function. However, I don't know what to call this group of words. The group starts with a preposition (at), so maybe it is a preposition phrase. But then I will have to call the sub-group("which cancer is curable") a noun clause. However, doing so doesn't make sense. Please guide me!
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher 3 года назад
It cannot be a phrase simply because it contains a verb 'is'. What is your main clause? The stage is already over. Which stage? 'at which cancer is curable'. adjectival clause. the pronoun 'which' stands for 'stage'. It would have read as: the stage at (the stage) cancer is curable. so the prepositional phrase is simply 'at which' or 'at the stage'. It is the 'which' that complicates this.

Mam I wanted to ask you that in the sentence, "The reason why I was sad is unknown. " you asked the question which to the noun but said that it is a noun clause..It should have been an adjectival..
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher 2 года назад
I have answered this question before on the comments section. Actually you can do it both ways depending on which question you ask. If you ask the verb what? you get a noun clause where the whole phrase is taken as 'something' . If you ask the noun which? you get an adjectival clause. So you are right as well. In a combined sentence as we cannot see the original it is hard to tell what the original conjunction was. But I think your analysis is better than mine.

First and always find the verb - ask what? (noun) Ask when? why? where? how? (adverbial) If not possible. Find noun ask who/which/what kind? (adjectival) So now you can work it out.

@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher 3 года назад
You don't frame questions. You merely ask the verb who or what? or the noun the question which? In this case: Has what? Ans - the virtue. which virtue? Ans - of committing us ........ If you frame big questions you will go wrong.

Nice video mam, have few doubts while practicing. In the sentence "I have forgotten to play chess". I asked the question what have I forgotten which should be a noun phrase. However the answer is Adverb phrase. Can you please help me
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
For noun phrase you ask the question who or what to the verb. Here the verb is 'have forgotten'. What? 'to play chess'. This is a noun phrase. To get an adverb phrase you need to ask the verb questions like when, where, why, how, although what?, what if? Do you get the answer 'to play chess'? No. Hence it is a noun phrase.

Ma'am I have a doubt , after classification of particular type of clause is done then while classifying it's type should we look at its subordinator ?? For Eg. = While classifying type of adverb clause should we look at it's subordinator? Also Ma'am you teach very well, I was in search of experienced and we'll versed teacher like you, Thank You.
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher 2 года назад
Thank you Soham. By subordinator I think you mean the marker like when, where, because, if, although etc. right? Yes you can look at them but they are not reliable. You need to ask the question when? where? why? how? what if? although what? etc. to the verb to get the clause as your answer. For noun clause ask the verb who? or what? to get the clause as answer and for adjective clause ask which? or what kind? to the noun (not verb) This is the acid test.
