Eastern USA Maple (Acer) identification. Lots of people get them confused but if you want the best trees to tap for Maple syrup, go with Sugar or Black maple. You CAN tap the others though, but they may not be as productive. Different maples also have different properties of their wood, shade, and growth form. There are even hybrids - Acer x freemanii.
Also, Canadians come get your maple trees straight. ;)

Thank you for this information! I found it very helpful, especially the part about the Acer x Freemanii.

Man alive, did you saved me from going absolutely insane. We have a hand full of OLD maples in our yard (4-5 feet in diameter) and I could not for the life of me understand why their leaves didn't match up anything I researched, whether Black, Red, Silver Maple or Norway... until you mentioned and demonstrated the one thing I hadn't accounted for: Red/Silver Hybrid. THANK YOU so much!!

Do you have any advice for differentiating between the leaves of a silver maple and the leaves of the hybrid maple?

The main thing I see with them is the leaf width, the hybrid is usually much narrower and the lobes are straighter and smaller than pure silver maple.

Also most of the hybrids have much redder fall color, petioles and stems than pure silver maple does.

Thanks! The apps can't tell them apart in the younger trees. I think I have Freemanii because it's growing at 25% of the pace as the tree next to it and the leaves are much more complex than the red.

At one one point you said something like "this technically isn't a samara, it's a ...". I couldn't make out the word, what was it?

4:17 yes this is the exact kind of Maple Leaf I've been researching for.. thank you for interviewing a Video about types of Maple Leaves.. my question is does the Green side turn to Red in Fall Time and the other side still stay's White in Theory is how Canada Flag was made. Interesting Fact my Surname Currie does mean River and Wet Marsh like how Silver Maples are found on Wet lands aside River Shores..
