Thanks for connecting people with their food. As a dairy farm hand I find that many people have no idea about how their food is produced and processed...no matter what kind of food it is, but especially if it's plant based.

Excellent video. I always knew you were a tree hugger. Ha ha. I measure trees the same way. If fingers touch then only one tap. Yes; big crown = lots of Leafs = higher sugar. If we have a line running next to a Red (soft) Maple we tap it.

Great video Nikki, I could follow this up with a whole other video of the tapping sins that I've seen while out leak checking our bush. Taps directly above/below or within an inch on either side of old holes, below the lateral, kinked drops, upside down spials. I shake my head sometimes and have been keeping a photo folder of the silly things I find for training purposes. I was wondering if you find yourself having to do on-the-fly filter paper changes or do you normally make it through a full boil on one set?

For a guy that wants to hang only about twenty buckets to collect maple sap, how long will the sap stay fresh hanging on the side of the tree if the temperatures never reach 40 degrees Fahrenheit? I mean if it takes a week to collect a total of 5 gallons of sap, will the sap start going bad at some point during that week that you should have collected and boil down the sap more often? And, is there a big difference in the taste of the maple syrup when it's boiled down over an open wood fire (by a couple of guys sitting around drinking beer stoking the fire at 2 am on a Saturday morning) verses boiling it down on your wife's brand new electric stove in your nice warm kitchen?

Do those tap spouts have a little air inlet to allow air to flow that fluid to the collector?

no, we try to make sure everything is completely sealed.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 2 года назад
@@MapleFarmer My engineering mind inquires, how does the sap flow back to the vacuum source if the tap spouts are sealed to the tree? It's like sucking through a straw with the other end sealed. I guess I'm missing something.
