I’m this weeks video, we joined forces with Johnny Dawes, old school legend of British rock climbing, all round fascinating character and master of movement.
Combining ideas of play, parkour, exploration and decoding the relationship between gravity, momentum, stillness and friction to achieve moves that you wouldn’t think are possible, Johnny’s climbing and coaching style has all the hallmarks of a true visionary. Safe to say, I’ve never had a coaching session quite like this, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to share this episode - I really think you guys are going to love it.

This dude is such an effective teacher. I loved that once he realised that being critical wasn’t working, he thought of a different perspective, and as soon as he was supportive you were able to do it. Also, “Yeah, but if your intuition is a bag of spanners, you get an intuitive bag of spanners!” 😂😂

This stuff is really good for static climbers who get frightened easily, you have to trust and let go in order for your body to move well, any movement based in fear will be tight, stiff, inhibited and emotionally not coming from the right place. Emotions and mechanics work in harmony both have to be in sync for the body to really work.

I'm only like 4 minutes into the video, but proprioception is such an underrated skill. Ultimately it's probably the most fundamental climbing skill, as it affects everything, but people rarely truly drill or train it. It's not really a surprise that many of those who excel at climbing come from dance or gymnastics backgrounds.

The reason I ask is that flow state is usually talked about as something which we enter by chance, when the conditions are 'just right'. Yet what Johnny had you do seemed like a deliberate and conscious way of getting in sync with that state. If so, that's pretty bloody profound.

I think that sometimes in climbing the psychological side takes over you when you are looking at a move on a climb, sometimes you just have those mental blocks of “I’m not sure I can do this move” and “I maybe am to scared to do” it so I think that confidence on the wall takes time. :)

I once heard him say (paraphrasing) in response to being asked if he's full of himself- he's good because he's explored what a human can be. I.e it's not unique to him, rather it's something that we're all capable of, but it requires a sort of serious commitment to play which most people don't want to do or forget to do as they grow up. And now a direct quote- "You can do all this pumpy pull-up shit, but you're still shit" Sometimes I think he is kind of chatting breeze, but then you watch him trying stuff like The Meltdown in 1985 and he just makes it look like art. Brutal art. But art.

Johnny Dawes at 2:20 "If that was a Transit van I was trying to stop rolling down a hill, I'd press it like that" - I feel like there's a lot of hidden wisdom in this casual remark, about how, when thinking about how to do a certain move/sequence/problem/route, it's easy to have the tendency to think about how you would try to comfortably complete your goal... but sometimes how you would position your body/prepare your mind if you were pulling at 100% max effort is different to how you would do so comfortably at 70% effort, and sometimes you need to consider the 100% approach if you want to climb at your limit

It was a strange moment for me in climbing only once before has something came close, that was when a heavily bearded man approached me and successfully sold me three pairs of boxer shorts under the Neb roof at Shaftoe crags in Northumberland. the precision he sometimes shows when doing a dynamic move into a position amazes me. sometimes i wonder if the video froze because he sticks the next position without having to wiggle about, just landing in the perfect spot and keeping still for a moment. And the part with the blue footholds was unique. i think there were very many things on various layers tought just in this seemingly very small move. Very refreshing!

"Look at your face from the inside". If anyone but Johnny Dawes had said something like that with a straight face, you'd laugh them out of the room. From him, it makes a weird kind of sense. What a wonderfully goofy man. If you didn't know this session was about coaching someone to climb better, you'd think it was a slightly esoteric kind of therapy.

11:40 - so basically Johnny’s a Jedi But I found this really interesting. I’m so used to seeing people doing the physical bit without tuning in the mental & proprioception bits. Makes me feel better as (coming back from injury, I was spending a bunch of time re-tuning myself yesterday- simple balances weren’t there until I “listened” (in Johnny’s words).

This guy inspired me to try at my bouldering gym whatever I can do without hands, after few mounts of practice I can tell that my results on slab got improved as crazy. This allow to really feel the balance vs body positioning, get real limits of your shoe adherence, and mainly get a way to minimize the force required to grab holes by maximizing weight on your feet. It is also fun challenge.

Loved this Hannah! He’s a bona fide genius I think, and they can be very difficult to learn from at first, he weirdly reminds me of my former piano teacher, who is coincidentally called John Law. Like watching a training montage from a kung fu movie or something. Transcendent stuff!

wonderful..love JD so much..such an amazing coach, climber and such a wonderful man. The whole thing about shape of body in relation to the wall or rock..the relation between the physical and mental (and proprioceptional). We've done some drills like this with Johnny before..the best climbing coaching we've ever had. Such a star!! Brilliant video.

He comes across as erratic and beautifully unaware, however, he is clearly onto something, theres no overly contrived way of describing things, its very much as he sees it. Theres gold dust there and its in pure form.
