If schools taught for a few hours every year how you can learn effectively, the pupils would be much more productive and still have more free time.

When the "sunk cost fallacy" was being discussed, it reminded me of a time when a critic received backlash for giving a book - that s/he didn't finish reading - a bad review. However, as a response, the critic said something like "if I eat a rotten egg, I don't need to finish eating it to know that it's rotten".

This was very fascinating…it led me into an interesting merry-go-round of circular reasoning. Applying the principles in this video to assess the video, I came up with the question, why should I avoid all bias? If I know I’m right about something, having found truth, shouldn’t I relentlessly maintain my bias toward that truth? Just because you’ve framed the issue that biases are ‘bad’ (in your opinion), should I try to find evidence to support that assertion or should I search for contradictory evidence? I finally decided that just because this video was easy to watch, that didn’t make it true - if it sounded good, I should question it; and that I should remember the sunk cost fallacy and not watch any more, having only lost five minutes on this one.

You start to talk about #5 "anchoring" under the confirmation bias. "Are you HAPPY with your social life?" vs. "Are you UNhappy with your social life?"
@rahvithecolorful
@rahvithecolorful 7 лет назад
As a person with social anxiety and very low self esteem, my bias is the opposite of self-serving: whenever something goes right it was because of external factors that helped me, and whenever something goes wrong, it's my fault even if it's clear that there were issues involved that I couldn't control. So I think that bias isn't about protecting your self esteem as much as it is about confirming the idea you have of yourself, even if it's actually making your self esteem worse.

I've noticed that most scientists exhibit a confirmation bias towards negative aspects of life. Although, it is the job of a scientist to be honest and tell the facts as it is, it is also important that they take care to not adopt an overly negative world view which could be detrimental to their own psychological health. Facts are facts, but as a person, it is important to believe in oneself and learn to ignore the facts sometimes in order to lead a healthy, positive and happy life !

Cognitive biases are how the natural mind of sinful man operates! Wow! It just hit me! Those who are still in sin need the biases functioning for them to survive their own stupidity until they meet Jesus, and give their lives to Him, thus taking one's first step into any actual knowledge, which the fear of the Lord is the beginning of. The first one keeps life from totally crushing you, until you are strong enough to learn from your mistakes. Then, you do not have to appear good in all things, because even the bad things become mere learning experiences taking me to better places.

All four of these are probably less pronounced in those of us who are deeply depressed. 1) We don't think we are performing very well, 2) we don't believe in easy answers, 3) we believe we have screwed everything up so badly that a little more doesn't matter, and 4) we automatically look for what will go wrong from here. I'm not arguing that we don't have equally poor cognitive biases but simply that they are different ones.

@BigHenFor
@BigHenFor 7 лет назад
edi Relationships are hard because 1) we aren't mind readers so have to learn how to communicate, 2) we all have insecurities - in all of us is a little child needing to be love but vulnerable and defensive, and 3) no one is perfect, and 4) we come into life without an instruction book telling us what do, so we screw up, and don't always learn from our mistakes. Hopefully, your parents will go to marriage counselling to address their difficulties, but there are no guarantees. Sometimes people love each other, but can't live together. What is important is that you get help and support for yourself to deal with whatever happens. It might be useful to consider counselling for yourself, or family counselling if circumstances allow. A good counsellor will help you steer through these tough times. I hope this helps.
@edi9892
@edi9892 7 лет назад
BigHenFor I agree with you for the most part, but for my parents everything comes too late. My father wanted just a pretty woman to show off, but never accepted her as a person. My mother saw in him a possibility to run away from her difficult home and as the end of all financial worries. Guess what: now her worries are bigger than ever before. I saw it going down for over 20 years from bad to ugly to incredible. Now I'm glad that none murdered the other.
@BigHenFor
@BigHenFor 7 лет назад
edi Yes, it is too late for them, and looking at it, they screwed up but, don't let it ruin your own life. We've no choice who are parents are. All we can do is learn from their mistakes, and someday forgive them.

I agree with the first, second and the fourth bias. However, in my personal experience I've come to see that 'sunk cost fallacy' isn't always a bad thing. My experience is based on a few projects I've undertaken. But lets just consider your example about a bad relationship. If you've been in a relationship for years and invested a lot time and effort, its a pretty good idea to hold on to the relationship even though the chances are bleak because humans are usually faced with situations that are highly unpredictable. So even though the chances are slim, you can focus on this future situation to improve your relationship. This is well within the context of your "FOCUS ON FUTURE COSTS AND BENEFITS" advice. Amazing video. Would love to see more where that came from.

I think it is a little contradictory to have a video like this when you have another one defending the idea of free will being an illusion. in fact, all the other videos that you have related to self improvement seem pointless if the one about the absence of free will holds true. I don't mean this as a criticism, but simply I don't see the sense of anything in the absence of free will, whether that is true or not.(Idk) bitesizepsych
@Enourmousletters
@Enourmousletters 8 лет назад
Free Will might be an illusion in a philosophical sense, but in a pragmatic sense we make choices and videos about the choices we make will change the way people make choices.
@franbbes
@franbbes 8 лет назад
+Enourmousletters i think that if there is no free will, we dont make choices, we simply do stuff and after your brain has already determined the action, you make up the reasons that construct the illusion of free will . the video describes wrong reasons (biases) that lead us to do something that doesnt really benefit us. if those reasons are merely a report on what our brain has already decided, why bother? your learning about these biases will only make you see why you did the right thing or not. no rational thought like "id better not fall into that bias" is going to change what youre going to do. probably your brain will make up excuses to justify your action anyway. reasons to do x or y are irrelevant if there is no free will.

@skillustrates
@skillustrates 7 лет назад
Making it to heaven is a matter of accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior. Believing in your heart, and confessing with your mouth, that Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, died for your sins to redeem you from hell. Point being ANYone can make it to heaven, so long as they believe and verbally admit Christ died for them. They don't have to be anything close to the perception of Mother Theresa. They could have just murdered somebody, and still make it past the gates of heaven. Why? Because it's not what you accomplish that gets you to God, it's what Jesus accomplished that brings you to God. Your efforts; your good deeds; your moral standing, are all irrelevant.

You made a fatal mistake at the very beginning of the video. Poor choices are going to depend on who you talk to. You can be very successful in business but made poor choices to get there, such as exploit people. Now you have achieved success at the cost of others but was that a poor choice, depends who you ask. Second lose money, how do you define lose money? Is it spending it and having nothing to show for it? Or not making enough to begin with? How do you measure this? You have made a lot of assumptions and used your own bias while making this video.

ki11bunny Isn't that a circular argument that misses one important point? That there are no perfect decisions? We cannot ask every source of information for advice, as we don't have the time and resources. Moreover, if everyone has biases, then all advice is has an element of self-serving spin in it. That is the problem: we seek certainty, where certainty may not exist because life is complex. Decisions can only be perfect in hindsight, that's why the Precautionary Principle applies: always have a Plan B.

MustHaveChannel If you are referring to the big bang *not once* will you find in the big bang theory that an "explosion came out of no where". Please educate yourself.

Big Bang was in spite of confirmation bias, not because of it. People wanted to believe that the universe has always existed, and Einstein himself tried to modify the equations so that we have an eternal stable universe, but that was later proved wrong. Also, the big bang is not an "explosion," it is simply an expansion, and furthermore doesn't address where it came from, because we don't know yet.

By the way, did you know that your own Bible scholars say that the Bible can't be 100% right? Check it out at biblehub.com/commentaries/matthew/28-10.htm
