Hey Everyone,
At the beginning of the year, when I quit my 9-5 job, I stated in a vlog that I was going full time with RU-vid and I was planning to embark on further motorcycle training.
I wanted to cover road, track, offroad - really as many disciplines as I could!
I thought about doing my IAM qualification to try and test myself and of course wanted to learn lots in the meantime!
After 2 months of delays starting the course - due to illness and being unable to ride a bike, I started my IAM journey with my mentor and first observer - Dave Lindley! This session went great and it was time for my second observed ride with the lovely Harry Sharples.
If you would like to read a more in-depth breakdown of this day: please refer to my website for the blog/diary.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this vlog!
If you are interested in embarking on your IAM journey, there is info here:
www.iamroadsmart.com/courses/...
I was not paid to attend this course and all views are my own
I hope you enjoy!

Personally speaking initially found it difficult not to see feed back as personal criticism and sometimes this can lead us adopting a defensive attitude. I can see why bikers are resistant towards further training because It can feel like we are being anialated but that is only the ego feeling threatened. Once we drop the defensive attitude we can see that we can only benefit from an alternative view point and this can only broaden our view and improve our skill level. I applaud you doing this series Kate as you are an experienced and confident rider and you are brave for documenting your journey. For anyone who is considering doing an advanced riding course I would say do it, it's not a dogmatic rigid set of do's and don'ts, it is a flexible system which encourages better observation and higher skill levels. Advanced riders and not only safer but actually ride quicker imo. I have done a few IAM skills days on track which have helped me massively and improved my confidence a great deal. Thoroughly recommended.

Another great video Kate. I would encourage all bikers to explore advanced rider training as it changes the way you ride on the road. I did my ROSPA and absolutely loved the experience. Hats off to you for documenting your observed rides, especially as you said, your not as relaxed riding as you would normally be if you was out be yourself! Keep up the good work! 😁🙏

I’m enjoying your vlogs Kate - your IAM experiences in particular and appreciate how exposed you can feel having an observed ride never mind posting the video footage for the world to see - courageous on your part to say the least but you’re clearly a good rider. I’ve got a KTM 1290 SAS also - awesome bike 👍

I’m really enjoying your videos Kate. It’s funny (in a nice way) seeing you do the things I was doing at the start of my IAM training. Your riding is really clean. It took me a little while to embed the system and I felt really inhibited for a long while. Then something clicked and then my riding started to flow. I’m sure you’ll do it a lot quicker than I did 👍

This is really interesting to watch, and as the intructors are telling you, you have good self-awareness to pick up on errors. It's only been a few years since I did my driving and riding test (A2), and they really rammed into my head cyclist etiquette so I was cringing a bit when you passed them - I knew he would say something XD. I have to applaud your motorway skills, I absolutley crap it on there and avoid it, so I think I'll be looking to do some motorway training next year.

Great to see how you dealt with the slip road after the feedback and the thought process develops as you become more familiar with and practice the system. Some people actually start riding worse at first, because they're using a lot of brain power and attention to think about the system, until it becomes more "automatic" in application.

You've just made me Google "are you allowed to cross a solid white line to overtake a cyclist". Answer is "You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less". I thought it was something like that!

Well done for undergoing this training. You'd get a much better experience if comms were used as there were many opportunities lost to identify hazards with improved awareness and anticipation in real time. It also helps dramatically with directions en route and not to be continually looking for the guy behind, there's only a limited amount of assistance he can give when you ride on visuals. More structure for this session would have helped clarify your aims and objectives for the ride and feedback to confirm if they had been achieved. Onwards and upwards, have fun and enjoy your rides.
@UsernameKate

They're doing exactly the right thing there, discouraging an illegal and unsafe close pass. If we're going to cross the white line (which we can do if they're going less than 10mph) for one cyclist (to give a safe distance) then we can do the same for two cyclists. There's no "need" to overtake, it's perfectly fine to follow slowly until it's safe to overtake.
