I used a combination belt and disk sander to remove the recommended area and it took all of 30 seconds! Just be careful not to remove too much as the belt melts away the aluminum very quickly! NB if anyone wants to try it, please do this in a workshop or even outside and wear safety glasses and clothes you don’t care much about because the aluminum dust will fly out like crazy.

Excellent, I consider myself just a hack before I started watching your videos and really paying attention to what you were saying... Mechanical watches are just absolutely fascinating I grew up on a farm and always was working on our old out of date equipment trying to squeak by... But all the videos you've done gave me confidence and trying to take a non-working watch and make it functional. The last couple of months I've had more success than the last few years combined and your info is well presented and has helped tremendously. I bought a Rolex 6426 off of eBay and disassembled and loaded it and voila it ran after I was done LOL success!!! So the current project is my wife's grandfather's 1950s Crosby automatic. Not an expensive watch so there's no pressure other than sentimental value... Winds well and and the mainspring is storing plenty of energy, but for some reason it's not making its way to the escapement wheel consistently and I think it's just 60 years of crud and old oil. Anyway it's disassembled and in the cleaning solutions you recommended and I think I've got a reasonable shot at getting it back together thanks to you 👍👍👍

Yeah, I can think of a movement holder hack, but I can't seem to get 10 minutes into a watch without breaking at least a couple stupid things... so far anyway.

@Mars-zgblbl
@Mars-zgblbl Год назад
Hey Tyrone - if it’s any help, get yourself a couple of junker movements and take them apart and reassemble them 10 times. Hold parts so that slips (like slippery screwdrivers) will move away from delicate parts. Remove one screw at a time, and place into a tray. I use old chocolate boxes. Use a sharpening stone on your tweezers and you’ll lose things less. I suspect this is due to a burr on the edge. Use a stone on your screwdrivers to make the blades fit the specific screws of that watch. Hope this helps and welcome to the slippery slope.

@awdturbopowah773
@awdturbopowah773 Год назад
Great idea! Excellent video as usual Alex 🙏. I noticed on another comment you mentioned you use the size specific holders for hand placement. Is that because it's just a more stable platform? I'll admit, I'm a bit afraid to modify my Bergeon 4040, or anything with that damn B logo after the prices they fetch 😂Maybe I should grab a cheap one from Amazon and try this trick, and see how it compares to the Bergeon 🤔. Thanks for the tip!
@watchrepairtutorials
@watchrepairtutorials Год назад
I can understand your hesitation about modifying the Bergeron but pick up a cheap one and try it out. The reason I like the stainless steel size specific holders is because they have a support for the center will jewel which prevents that jewel from moving when you’re pressing the hands on.

I think you’d probably have to make your own in order to achieve that.

What about movement holders that are made of hard plastic with movable pins?

Well, personally, I’m not a fan of them because they’re a little big for my taste, but they usually present the same problem because the pins are too high over the movement. Those are typically used for holding cases with the movement inside when you’re removing a screw down back.

@@watchrepairtutorials Good point. I’m just starting out and it was a low cost (cheap) alternative to the Bergeon 4040. But I’m learning that cheaper isn’t better in some cases.

I’m surprised by this solution. However, what’s more surprising is that the movement holders are designed this way to begin with.

Well, it seems to be a common design but for me, it just doesn't work

@@watchrepairtutorials I feel the same. It doesn’t work for me either. I’ll try this on one of my cheap, brass movement holders. I was meaning to file the edges anyway, so I’ll do this too.
