As per usual, Chad's materials are really the best. While on the surface, they appear "easy", they are the absolute elemental-fundamentals necessary for mastery of improvisation. Understand that while leading to fairly immediate improvement, it will take YEARS to incorporate all his materials (I think I am on year 3, and still incorporating all the various ideas). What is so great about CLB is that he is willing to share the thought and work process in a clear and honest way. Believe me when I say the vast majority of music teachers are NOT this way (and I know whereof I speak). It turns out that only the most humble masters are able to do this.

Yes! This is something I do with my students with solos and walking bass lines. With walking lines, I’ll give my students Beats 1 3 4 with great voice leading and have them insert beat 2. Then I’ll give them Beats 1 4 and have them fill in 2 and 3. Finally I’ll just give them either beat 1 or 4 and see if they can write or improvise the rest using the same kind of smooth voice leading.

Been practicing this for maybe 3 days now and I can already feel my voice leading getting better every time I practice. So I guess it’s time to just grind through a whole bunch of songs until it gets easy.

This video is a gold mine for learning to improvise. If you are just starting, just playing the written stuff you had is fantastic but on top of that the concept at the end of playing bar to bar and picking out the sounds you like and dislike will get someone pretty far not just to playing well, but discovering their own sound/preferences. Thank you for this content really good stuff!

Amazingly solid clear concepts, thank you! As an extension of this, I’ve been working on using three and four note transitions to the chord tone of the next bar, and what I’m starting to realize is that some of my best lines are when all 8 notes are being felt as a transition to the target note of the next bar.

"Days Of Drinks n Flowers"... seems I might have heard of that one? :) I think one of the first few RU-vids I saw of you was an interview of you with "Better Sax Jay"... and this was the very topic you started on that really caught my attention- impressed me. I've tried to start thinking in those confines. I'm an old sax player (retired and started taking up the sax again) ... play with a few old timer bands around town- including subbing for a band that has my old (back in the day) band director in it. Told him about you... think he's very impressed, too! Anyway, trying to keep it short, keep up the good work- lots of us folks need folks like you!

I appreciate what you are conveying here. My problem is that even though the examples did show voice leading and playing inside, the phrases were terse and not-pretty. Like some notes were missing. So my problem i guess is the definition of what qualifies as being melodic.

I love your method, but in my case it is a challenge, although this is the way I feel. When I improvise I try to get to these closures but honestly I think you do it in a way that seems so easy. My way of thinking when creating melodies is very poor, because I think of notes that are very close together and those jumps that you make (which are wonderful) and that sound so intuitive are impossible for me, even if I do it slowly, it's hard for me to invent different things and cool. I don't give up. I also try to study rhythm changes but A is a world and it's not as easy to study rhythm changes as it is to study blues. It's easy to play a blues, but to improvise a good jazz blues you need to study a lot. Thank you very much for the knowledge you share. Cheers

Thank you Chad! Great ideas and tips as always. So the basic take away is to use approach notes or surrounds/enclosures on beat 4 to establish the next harmony. If you are dealing with a harmonic rhythm of two beats per chord you still appear to be targeting the chord tones of either 1-3-5-7 for the first and third beat of the measure to add structure. Does that observation seem right?

The short answer is generally yes. Taking licks through 12 keys, whether they're short or long ii-V's, minor chords, etc is an essential skill for blowing. It's really difficult at first, but gets easier with consistent practice and ultimately is a great ear training exercise. Don't write them out in 12 keys, learn it by ear/piano.

Interesting and useful video - thank you! I notice that in the Blues Chorus on the voice leading you are landing mainly on the 3rd each time, occasionally on the root, and only once I think on 7th and 5th. Is there any thinking behind this, or just how this particular solo happened to flow naturally?

Thirds are good as it will define the chord quality eg major or minor but you can use any chord tone you want with a half or whole tone connection best.
