How to improvise over chord changes - The 1357 method

In this video we discuss the steps of how to play harmonically correct solos over chord changes. This method not only creates 'correct' sounding solos, but also helps you recognise the associated notes with each chord symbol. Obviously I've written the 1357 (which are also known as 'chord tones', or 'arpeggios') above each chord for now, but eventually you'll want to know the 1357 of a chord just by looking at the chord symbol. Knowing your major scales is essential for this!
This method is brilliant for new tunes and 'getting to know' the changes.
If you'd like to play along to this video, then please find the relevant PDF transpositions below:

Thank you for taking the time to video and post this. This lesson is also a helpful lesson for the guitar player moving from strumming chords folk/cowboy style to being a bit more creative with the the chord tones/arpeggio. Thanks again.

Very nice video, thanks! I play tenor, soprano, and baritone myself, sometimes thinking of getting an alto. And for all of you who didn't know it, this method was discovered in 1357, the year when jazz was invented.

Good stuff and reasonably simple for budding imrpovisors. ... I often use the chords to Hazel O'coonor's 'Will You' to get students on the road to picking off chord tones, as that song is arpeggiated in 1-3-5-3; gets them hitting the changes. But it can be done on any song chord progression. The other method I use is arpeggios over 1-IV-V Rock and roll 12 bar changes as that comes in handy so often in different keys.

Really helpful. Thank you. I've been playing the 1 then the 3 then the 5, etc. - eventually full arpeggios, guide tones, voice leading, etc. - and saying the chord names out loud while I play to help cement the changes in my head (I play violin, so chords aren't second nature to me, yet) ... but that's not yet improvising - it's mechanical. I like the technique shared here better, because it's improvising right away (by feeling, playing, and varying the rhythm in a meaningful way). That seems more useful to me, more reinforcing (and less boring). Will be trying it tonight!

I think the theory behind what you are teaching ie.e chord tones is admirable, but I wonder if a beginner alto sax player would want to play along with you but automatically start reading the notes on the screen? Then they realise that they are not playing in the same key as you and get confused and disheartened. If you are on alto wouldn't it be better to have the notes on the screen in the key for alto sax so they could play along with you? At the moment you are asking a beginner to transpose the notes off the cuff without any assistance from you.

Hey! thanks for the feedback. It's more a demonstration than a practical exercise to do simultaneously to the video... HOWEVER, I agree that if someone really wanted to play along to the video then they'd likely need a transposed PDF to work from, so I've added these to the description! :) Thanks again. G

Do not learn how to read music….start young….have hero’s….compose your own music…play at least 4 hours a day…be relentless….listen to everything…the T.V is your friend…it plays every style of music imaginable……does not discriminate…..great teacher…this guy is sad…do you really want to sound like him…chase your own sound.

Hmm I might gently add an opinion here if I may. For those that may not know, George is one of the top sax players working in the professional player scene in the Uk. Having known his playing for years as both a very successful saxophonist touring the world with A list artists, and as a highly effective educator, I think perhaps it might be folly to disregard his experience, FREE advice, and irrefutable expertise. As a guitar player- I wish I’d had this advice 20 years ago, and as a professional musician myself, I can also attest to the accuracy of his knowledge and suggestions - AS THE FIRST POINT of understanding the mechanisms of music improvisation - which are universal across all instruments - to find your sound. As much as it is often popular to suggest otherwise; music is a language that follows hundreds of years of gradual development. Disregarding the importance learning the rules is THE tried and tested method to ensure one doesn’t appear on records, doesn’t tour the world, doesn’t experience the highs of playing alongside others of a world class nature, and doesn’t get gigs. I wouldn’t normally bite on internet comments - but your accusations were rude and graceless. The internet continues to baffle me. Much of your other advice however, before the snarkiness crept in, is spot on though. *But I’ll add; if you can’t read music, you’ll never be able to play someone else’s. You will miss out on the joy of it revealing itself to you alongside other wonderful players doing the same in an ensemble. Be relentless…. In looking for ways to fill the cup.
