Inviting the gaze to a focal point rather than getting lost in the chaos of detail.... A fantastic reminder for me. Thanks!

Glad you like it! It was a popular piece at my latest Comiccon this year. I might do more dragons in the future 🙂

This one is gorgeous 😍. I envy your ability with a dip pen. You’ve encouraged me to keep practicing and I’m getting better at managing the thickness of the ink (especially when I use white ink). Thank you for the video. This dragon looks so good!

Thanks so much for watching, glad that you found value in the info. The more I use dip pens, the more I discover how versatile they can be. I wish you all the best with your practice.

Wow, what an amazing piece. Probably the best pen and ink dragon I've ever seen. New subscriber here. Hoping I'll be able to hold this kind of pen. (I have autoimmune disease) Such an inspiration. Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words! A dip pen works similarly to other tools in terms of how it is held, it just takes a bit more maintenance and time because of the dipping in ink part.

I appreciate that you draw in batches: from a general outline of one part of the dragon with adding fine details, then moving on to the next part and so on. I can get caught up in thinking that I have to outline everything first and only then start adding detail, which can get overwhelming. Thanks for reminding me that drawing is a flexible process.

For sure, it's personal preference whether to outline the entire subject first, or at all. One of the ink masters that I study, Bernie Wrightson doesn't use outlines at all - which I find fascinating and a technique I aspire to emulate.

Your ability to do such detailed work is impressive. I sometimes get impatient when faced with large amounts of fine detail and try to finish the drawing too quickly. You (and your gorgeous cat) encourage me to slow things down and be more Zen. Loving your channel. Keep up the great work.

Thank you so much 😀 For the longer projects, I sometimes do them over the course of one or several weeks, in sessions of 2 hours per day. With the shorter intervals, there's less fatigue and more patience :)

Thank you! The process took six hours to complete, from start to finish, including the thumbnails, pencil underdrawing, and ink application (and filming).

Thank you very much for the video. I particularly appreciated the explanations provided during the illustrations, as they were highly informative and enlightening. Please continue your efforts; I also perceive an enhancement in your skills, although I intend not to insinuate that your initial performance was lacking, but rather to acknowledge your increased purposeful approach to your artwork.

Thank you, I appreciate that. Skill development is definitely a journey and I'm glad to hear that my progress is visible. I can probably thank RU-vid for this, as talking through my process makes me more aware and conscientious of what I'm doing. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much Chloe for this amazing process video😍, I'm definately tempted to try to jump into inktober challenge this year, I did try such a challenge last year from a Domestika course I took with teacher Sorie Kim, it was my first ever drawing challenge and I really enjoyed it. 🥰👌🖋️✏️

Chloe, I want to thank you for your videos which have helped me so much on my own inking journey! Please can you answer this question. Why do my brand new, cleaned of any industrial oil pen nibs, suddenly turn all crappy and stop making reliable lines? Please help!!
@longstrideillustration
@longstrideillustration 11 месяцев назад
Thank you, I'm happy to hear that the videos are helpful. It's hard to say without seeing the nibs, maybe you can email me a picture? Nibs can last for decades or for only one drawing, it depends on various factors: the amount of pressure on the pen, the paper type and quality, the type of ink, the angle it's held at, and regular maintenance. Nibs can become dull, misshapen, or rust. Some nibs are of poor quality and break but generally, they should still hold a line if all of the above factors are addressed.

Hi Chloe. -.ZeS.- from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad). First of all, thank you for sharing your Art and your knowledge, it always helps a lot! I have been exploring inking with dip pens for a couple of months (I was more used to using fountain pens and brush) and I'm really liking it due to the line with variation and the full control of the lines, as well as being very meditative! I do have a question for you, if you don't mind... I'm currently using a G nib and a Maru nib. I see that you're using some other nibs and, in this video the 101 Imperial (I believe). I'm looking to expand to a few more nibs, specially some with a broader line width as well as others to increase the type of lines produced to make the final drawings more interesting in general. What would your recommendation be in order to have a good set to cover 80-90% of line types? FYI, I draw more artistic art, not comics or manga (though sometimes for fun I might do a piece on the subject too). Thank you for your help in advance and I subscribed a few weeks ago when I found you on RU-vid (I really like your work). Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎

Thank you for watching, subbing and for the comment. I also use Tachikawa's G-nib and soft Maru 77. I have a very light touch and so the 101 nib is nice with high flex and elasticity but is not for everybody, they break under pressure and can feel "squirrely". For broader lines, I like the Hunt 513EF or a Kolinsky brush no.2. I created a nib chart in my Blog: longstrideillustration.com/a-beginners-guide-to-dip-pens-for-drawing/ and also have a look at my (brand new) FAQ page and Tools page where I list the supplies I use on a regular basis. longstrideillustration.com/faq/
