The thing I do for inking that I learned from lettering class is to tape the art board up on a piece of board. I use a Masonite drawing board. Sit it on your lap. Spin it around as you ink. Angle it as needed. Works great only if you’re inking with brush and or marker. Which is primarily what I use. Saves your back on long drawing sessions where you’re cranking.

They re-issued it a few months ago with new Pencils by people like Kirby and John Buscema, and Danny Miki was one of the inkers.

I have that version and it's very superior to the one shown here. Steve Rude's pencils don't allow for much interpretation so finished product by the various inkers looks almost the same. The new sections with pencils by Buscema, Gil Kane, Jack Kirby and others allow for more input from the inker and really show that there's more than one way to ink a page.

Man, I have a worn-out, dog-eared copy floating around somewhere on my shelf. Learned so much from this book, and Janson's DC's Guide to Comic Book Inking. These two books totally changed my thinking on the craft.

I know ya'll are busy but it would be cool if there was "How to Ink Outlaw Comics" with Piskor & Rugg pencils. Something for the back burner.

Ruler tricks of the trade work for animation as well. I used the taped penny trick to make clean pencil lines. Another tool was a stylized straight edge by banging a plastic ruler against a desk a bunch of times. Makes a nice altered natural line with the pain of eyeballing perspective. Works great when you need to crank out production bgs.

Great timing chaps, being referring to this book again for my current inking project, had it since it came out and although dated still very useful. Oh and there's also a useful second volume with even more examples and try out pages.

I used the DC guide to inking that was penned by claus Jansen when I starting in the indi books in the 2000s Amazing artist who inked frank millers works. Heavy inks with brush and quil pens. I did use this book as well for a time as well but nothing compares to claus.

I thought I read this book in high school, but I graduated in 96. Anyway, had this when it came out and ever since, I've kept every drawing surface (these days a Cintiq) as close to a 90 degree angle as possible off of advice from this book.

i'm a digital artist and you really still cant beat o.g. inking on paper.not only that but a physical piece can sell for big bucks! digital is great for color though.

I own the book, but hearing you talk about it adds so much more depth. Thanks for this video! I hope you add more inking content. If you do,consider doing a collab with Walden Wong (Walden Wong Art) He’s an DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, inker who has a growing RU-vid channel. I’d love to hear a show talking about the craft, inking history, various artists and their styles. Thanks again!

There was a multi-issue inkers roundtable in some early issues of Comics Scene. Janson, Palmer and a few others I can't remember. Might be interesting to cover if you have those issues already. I distinctly remember Janson discussing the playboy model he used as reference for Black Widow.

Also this book was part of a contest when it first came out. It had a blue line page inside you could ink up and send off. I think the prize was to ink a issue of nexus.

It was the ghost rider books early 2000s that was the first Wacom drawn books nearly put inkers out of business. I think it was Claremont that was drawing them. Everything was done digital.

Just wanted to publicly shame myself for getting rid of all of the how-to books I'd collected from the 90s and early 00s (including this one) before a move across country. Ended up being totally unnecessary to do so. I'll never forgive myself and neither should you.

The “inkers doing drawing” wonkiness reminds me of when Scott Williams did an Uncanny X-Men variant a few years back and it just looked like a worse version of Jim Lee.
