you cant even easily re arrange pages either.. theres no click and drag option for re arranging pages you have to create a heading for each page first.

It never used to be so long winded. Years ago, you could just say to start numbering at whichever page you liked. Then they went and changed it and made it so complicated

@@gj3044 The challenge is that people have many different needs for page numbers. Some want roman numerals for the table of contents and then Arabic number format for the text. Some want page numbers to restart in each chapter / section. By having the functionality to add sections and to then format the page numbers depending on the section, you can cover all use cases. Once you run through the flow once, it becomes intuitive. I'm not sure how you would design it differently to cover all the different use cases.

Also, I think having this method adds accessibility features for those with lower vision. The section divisions and numbers can be identified by text-to-speech readers which makes it easier for the listener to follow along with the structure of the document.

I have been using Word since it was an egg and thought that you couldn't teach me about page numbers, as I knew all about it. I persevered with your video and, of course, you explained Section Breaks, which in the 34 years I've been working with PCs, I didn't know anything about. I will never doubt your superior knowledge again! Thank you for that. My only concern with this is that I may have to spend my life watching your entire collection of videos, as you explain things so well that I learn mahooosive amounts. Hi Kevin. I knew all the features you explained but I still like your very clear explanation, as usual 😉. At the end perhaps you could have mentioned that a right click on the table of contents on Refresh would allow to update the page numbers in the ToC.

The ToC updates automatically when you print the document or export it to PDF.

Kevin - I have watched a bunch of videos trying to figure out how to do this and yours is the absolute best. Others go to fast, confuse me by switching to other things, add extra information that is not about this - I only wanted this information. Thank you. I am still struggling with one thing. I have separated the document into sections and put page number 1 on my page 6. Great. However, it is not extending the rest of the page numbers through the remainder of the document. I'm trying to figure it out.

UPDATE: If anyone is interested, I found a solution: I double-clicked on my page 3 footer (where the "Page 1 of 3" is), and then double-clicked on the "3" which highlights it. Then, I right-clicked on the highlighted "3" and clicked "Edit Field", and changed the Field from "NumPages" to "SectionPages", and then clicked OK. Now my page 3 shows "Page 1 of 1". ORIGINAL COMMENT: I opened a new Word doc and followed along. Great tutorial! I have a cover page and a table of contents page. My book starts on Page 3. I want my pages to show "Page _ of _", but Word is counting my cover page and TOC page. I only have 3 pages on my new document. How can I get Page 3 (the beginning of my book) to read "Page 1 of 1", and not "Page 1 of 3"? Reading the past comments, Keven doesn't reply to comments... but, I thought I'd take my chances. If anyone has the answer, please reply, because this problem is kicking my a$$.
