It probably would help people if you mention that you used medium set mortar that is polymer modified, because that's what you need for large format porcelain tile. Probably help a lot of people who would just think to use thinset

Thanks for taking the time and patience to shoot and edit videos on the job-site, I cant imagine the stress of having every single technique criticized everytime you upload a video. It surprises me to see how many "experts" comment on tradesman's videos despite the fact that the videos were probably not intended for them. These are probably the same people that leave bad yelp reviews at every restaurant they visit. Keep up the good work and thanks for putting out content!

My pleasure Skip! The funny thing is that a lot of these so called experts are making a lot of false accusations out of fear that I am taking away their jobs. That is very far from the truth . I am just trying to help those people who want to do their own renovations have better success with their projects.And in the mean time demonstrating how much work goes into a project to help people get better value for their money if they are going to hire out. Hope to hear from you again.

Hi, nice work,I have been tiling for 30 yrs and your technique is fine .Personally I lay and pull (tilt back) every tile I lay with my margin trowel to check coverage and add or remove adhesive if necessary.It is very quick and efficient with the knowledge I have achieved 90% coverage.Here in New Zealand our timber framed houses are often built with out of plumb walls and often lined without checking the walls for straightness.Don’t take too much notice of the haters .

Folks, key note tiling in wet applications. 90% coverage! And always check to maoe aure you have proper bonding. Large format tiles it is just as important as it is smaller tiles. Always always check your coverage and bond.

What size is the notch on the trowel? I’m going to being doing 12x24 in tiles soon and it’s my first time so learning as I go. I already got the size that is recommend for the Kerdi system which I’m using as well, can I use that? Lastly what cement did you use for these? Thanks for the videos they help a lot!

Hi Jeff, may I ask why you are using Kerabond versus Kerabond-T? I want to install 12x24 porcelain tile on kerdi wrap. I've read that kerabond-t is designed for large format tile. Thinset deserves its own video series. Cheers from Toronto!
@ryanmckee3193

While I don't feel you should tear it down I do have have issues with s few things. 1. you said you didn't need to try and get 90% coverage because it was a strong tile...the strength of the tile has nothing to do with the amount of coverage needed. 2. If you aren't collapsing the ridges of thinset by pressure and sliding the tile perpendicular to the direction of your ridges, then your coverage and bond is far from sufficient. 3. However you choose to apply thinset is up to you but if you're going to use a notched trowel on both, the wall and tile you need to make sure the ridges are going the same directions otherwise air will get trapped and you won't get the coverage needed. Just a few thing I wanted to pass along, these arent opinions they are industry standards. Feel free to ignore them, but industry standards are in place for a reason. That is some good looking tile!
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
Thanks for your feedback Ryan, first let me say I have been installing tile for many years and spent 3 years doing nothing but contract tiling. I know a lot about what I am talking about. Secondly let me address your criticism. The 90% rule is a standard for floors due to the transfer of weight. When installing wall tile the goal is to set the tile in position and to ensure that there is a flush surface, this can be achieved in a number of ways. My technique has never failed and has never resulted in the need for a service call to correct it. Instead of trying to apply floor installation techniques to wall installation, why not just take this opportunity to learn from a pro.
@jgat007
@jgat007 7 лет назад
To sum it all up: none of the tile installed on this job will lift and there won't be any cracked grout. In the future, best to pull a tile after installing and show coverage to the camera. That'll prove everything.

Seems like the ridge direction is a matter of personal choice/experience. I've seen some youtube tilers 'back butter' flat (Schluter Systems North America ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AaP1uA6FIQE.html), some with ridges parallel(Polmaster Construction & Tile Ltd.) and some(like here) perpendicular.

Hey Jeff, I was looking for a video where you go over making sure the kerdiboard/cement board is plumb before tiling. Looks like you don't wet shim the boards. Instead you apply extra thinset, press lightly and adjust if needed to get plumb. Correct?

Can you offer a suggestion on using 24x24 tile on a wall that is 35 3/4" wide? The shower door will probably be about 1" in from the edge of the wall. Should I tile like the shower door won't be there, and cut the tiles so they each take up half the wall (just under 18" wide each) with one grout line down the center of the wall? Or should I cut the tiles like the shower panel is the edge of the wall, so the grout line goes through the center of the shower valve/spout, and then the one tile will be a little wider, going all the way out to the edge of the wall into a Schluter profile? This will make the tiles look even while in the shower stall and have a grout line that seems to go right in the middle of the shower stall. Thanks!

I have non-load bearing interior walls made from steel studs 16" on center facing basement exterior wall. As I'm buying all of my materials I'm coming to the realization that this is a tremendous amount of weight of having porceling tile that I intend to hang on steel studs that are secured at top and bottom by little pan head screws. I'm worried that hanging all of this will put undue stress on the studs at the point of the pan head screws and tile wall may collapse. Are these valid concerns? What could be done to avoid it or any other light weight solution?

@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
Thanks for asking. I use mapei ultrslight cement, however there are other products on the market that have a great bonding strength and can hold large tile on a ceiling . Chances are you cannot get this type of product at your local building staor so go to a tile supplier and ask for the cement that can hold 40 lbs per sq foot on a ceiling and they will help you out. other than that use leveling clips to keep everything smooth. And wear a hardhat....just kidding

So you always place the tile motar on the wall vertical and place the motar on tile horizontal or vice versa and in that way there will be a strong bond. But if I was to only place motar on the wall and scrape it vertically and place bare tile on it, would I run into any problems. I'm a DIY guy .

@HomeRenoVisionDIY

Traditionally yes but when using a water[proofing system water diversion is not the goal so I did it this way to maximize the look. This way the floor tile covers the cuts in the wall tile since it was scribed to the contour of the floor pan

I'm trying to tear up a concrete board from someone's dining room to put down hardwood flooring. I'm just a helper so I'm getting the grunt work, not laying down the hardwood lol. The tile installer nailed AND glued the board to the subfloor, making it very difficult to get the subfloor smooth enough to put down the hardwood. And suggestions on how to get the adhesive up? I also had spinal surgery on my neck and am not feeling too well back there haha.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 6 лет назад
I would use a different approach there. I would suggest to the boss that he gets a machine to remove it or install plywood or floor leveler over it. adhesive will tear up the subfloor and you will be right back where you started with a bad surface, and a sore neck.
@jacobwilson8151
@jacobwilson8151 6 лет назад
Would using an orbital sander with 60 grit sandpaper work? The boss said if I hit a nail it'll tear the paper up, but I'm bringing my own ROS and paper and that's a risk I'm willing to take lol.
