TILE A SHOWER WALL---TUTORIAL

There are many different ways to tile a shower wall. One of the most common questions I get is, "do you tile the wall or floor first in a shower?" In my experience, and the way I was taught, is to tile the walls first while stacking off a stick nailed to the wall. Then tile the floor, then lastly add the cut tile between the floor and wall. Another way it could be done would be to tile the floor first, then tile the walls. The problem with that is you could damage the floor tile as you are working on the walls. Also, shower floors may not be perfectly flat and level, making it difficult to stack the wall tile on the uneven shower floor tile.
I also get the question, "how do you layout wall tile for a shower?". Depending on the size and shape of the tile there could be different methods. But the most popular size today is a 12x24 porcelain tile, laid either in a horizontal or brick pattern. In this video, I show an easy way to lay out the tiles, using what is called a "story pole". This way, it is easy to check the layout of the 12x24 porcelain tiles in the shower itself without trying to remember fractions of an inch off of a tape measure. Since 12x24 is a nominal size (actual size will be something like11-13/16"x 23-5/8"), and grout joint width needs to be added, a story pole can make things much simpler. It is also important to make sure that the layout has a full tile is at the ceiling, and not a small or sliver cut.

To avoid mortar in your grout line don't push your tile and close your grout line but lay your tile up against the other tiles and push away. You can close your ridges at the same time. I been installing for 15+years but after installing over 3000 feet alone, 12×24 with square edges, I perfected the method. Thank you for the tips.

Ehh, just sister most out of plumb studs, then if you need a little extra leveling, I use mortar to screed on the substrate before tiling. Then, you have flat, plumb walls. Similar approach to make corners square. But clearly, the more you do it, the easier and quicker it gets! Isaac is a great tile teacher.

The best way to secure the support stick to the wall is with a few dabs of hot glue to glue it to the wall and then wedge a few support sticks underneath the stick to the floor. A support stick on either end and one in the middle is usually enough. This is the best way to do it especially if you have the kerdi system or other waterproof membrane where you cant pierce it with nails or screws. Afterwards the sticks comes off fairly easily and you can get the hot glue off the membrane carefully with a scraper without damaging it.
@billymacktexasdetective5827
The best way is to not use one in the first place. I never did understand why people do that...
@lomparti
@lomparti Год назад
@@billymacktexasdetective5827 The reason its used it because its alot easier to run the tiles up from a prefectly level line rather than starting from the floor where many times its not perfectly level and also many times the bottom row of tiles need to be cut. You just install all the full tiles then next day remove the support stick cut and install the tiles on the bottom row etc etc it just makes things alot easier and cleaner
@lomparti
@lomparti Год назад
@@billymacktexasdetective5827 Also I forgot to add usually you want to run the wall tile over the floor tile but its not a good idea to install the floor tile first, then the wall tile because you dont want to be working over freshly installed floor tile and risk dropping something and damaging the floor etc. Using the support stick you can get all the wall tile installed, then install the floor tile, then install the last row of wall tile around the floor. Basically there are many reasons and benefits for using the support stick.
@billymacktexasdetective5827
@@lomparti I stand by what I said. I don't give 2 shits if the floor is unlevel or any of the other "reasons" you state. I set wall tile on top of the floor tile, like any rational person would and I install them perfectly level. Then I run right up the wall. But if someone can't cut a wall tile to conform to the floor, they should probably find a different line of work. This method is unnecessary and a waste of time...

I’m not a tiler, but I’m embarking on my first tiled walk in shower. I have 2 questions...#1 wouldn’t you want to set the floor tile first, so the wall tiles would “overlap” the floor tiles? For water runoff purposes. #2 instead of puncturing the waterproofing membrane, can I use the story pole method, cut the bottom coarse to fit, and let it set up, and build from there? You were only missing that bottom coarse when you did the wall. One coarse. You could have started with the bottom coarse then, and waited to finish the top coarse from what I watched. All in all, professional work!! Thanks for the video, much appreciated

I have never had the issue of my bottom tile kicking out but I also use the level master wedge system so that helps a lot. I’m surprised you don’t use that system but you probably don’t need to I guess. Your method is very weird to me but hey no judgement, it obviously works.

I made a huge mistake and used a nylon 80grit wheel brush on a drill to remove some mortar from the joints. It removed the finish off the tile. I’ve reached out to the store with zero luck on how to fix this. I search your videos but couldn’t find anything. Can you please recommend a fix or sealant to use that will give the factory shine back to the tile. I have attached a picture of the tile brand I used from floor and decor. Thank you!!! So short story. I went to re-caulk my bathtub about 6 or 7 weeks ago (just moved into my new house last year), and as I removed the old caulking, tiles started popping off the wall. One thing led to another and I'm now in the middle of a full-blown remodel of my bathroom (even took out the floor and exterior wall). The last thing I expected was to find Isaac and think, wow somebody made me really genuinely appreciate incredible tile craftsmanship. Not only are you an incredible tradesman but you're also a legitimately good coach. Thanks again for all the awesome tips you've really helped remove a lot of the anxiety of building my first shower. I’m thinking that because he started one row up, the story pole is holding them in place. Otherwise they would slide down the wall. The nail holes are then re-sealed with membrane compound. I’d be tiling the walls first, from the bottom. then any gap is hidden by the floor.

It's been around for a while, but cast iron doesn't age well compared to newer materials. That's why every tiler on RU-vid switches out the old cast iron ones for an updated drain assembly. But, I do get using a product for a long time, only to have so many others switch to another style, while you wonder why. lol

Then install remaining wall tiles on top of finished floor so water flows off wall to floor more easily. Correct???? Thank you so much. These are great logical tips!

I scratch in mud before I trowel and also back butter every time. Reason being is how hot or humid it is try it some time in a test. You know how the bag gives you x amount of working time per product ? Troll it on wait a little bit as is starts to crust over time it. Then flat trowel and then trowel and look at the time it’s takes to crust over. Huge difference in time for when it’s hot and dries too fast. I see a lot of guys setting of mud on a run that is already too far gone so the bond would be less than ideal. Works especially well on long runs on floors vs a shower you not going far on anyway

I respect your skills, but why do you say level each row of tile? Who cares if it is level? 1/2” off who cares? You want to have full tile at top, if you level the ceiling first, and know if that’s dead nuts, then ok, but that’s never the case. I tile, and treat ceiling as boss! Unless it’s crazy off

Thank you tile coach, I gained a lot of important tricks of the trade from you, and that means a lot because I’m a guy who did everything on my own house, built it all myself but It helps to gain smarts from people who do it every day. Thank you so much, Steve

Doesn't nailing into the waterproofing compromise the waterproofing? I don't know why it's okay to puncture the waterproofing.

Hi, great video. Can you go into the proper way to do the inside corners? I've seen the back wall done first then the side walls. I'm using 1/8in grout spacing. Do I keep side wall tile 1/8 in off back wall and grout it or use silicone in the corner? Seen a few different ways online. Thanks!

I am using a prefab pan but don't know how the tile and pan lip work together. The lip is about 5/16, so the backer is already over it. Do I still install the tile down to 1/4 above the pan? How does that bottom edge get sealed? Thanks in advance.

I am using exact or similar tile for only 3 rows around a soaking tub only, in an alcove - is the wood piece still necessary to start the 2nd row on first or can I skip that and just start with 1st row? Also, i saw another video by someone else who said do not caulk or silicone under / around that 1st row, that it’s just “food” for mold/mildew grow on - which sounds logical but I can’t wrap my head around not doing it.. so the tile just sets right around deck of tub with nothing “finishing” the 1st row to tub? 😮

I use a hawk and flat side of the trowl to spread the thin set instead of having to bend over to get out of the bucket...much faster and cleaner

The tile at 19:55 has some sort of bubble/flaw on the face of it. "Ceilings are usually highest at one of the corners." Yeah except when they're not. And I'd never tile against a ceiling that drops 1/2" across 3 feet. That's going to look lousy. Do it right and get the ceiling level.

What thinset did you use where no back butter is needed? What did you use for edging since the backerboard stuck out so much plus the tile? It must have been an inch higher?? Awesome vid, lot's of tips. Thank you!

Thanks for the video. Can I ask a few questions. 1. What are your thoughts on laying the first row on the main wall and then carrying on to finish the side walls and building up, to eliminate any issues Vs main wall first and then side walls as you're showing. 2. You are leaving a gap on the edge of the wall that looks straight. If the top width of the wall is different to the bottom width, how do you keep the line uniform. This is critical to maintain a vertical edge down. 3. What are your thoughts on shluter edging to deal with the above

If you installers are leaving a 'blobbing' tile adhesive on the back of each tile and leaving large air gaps behind all the tiles, should I worry? They don't seem to own a trowel. Putty knife.

How high can you tile up a wall before they begin to buckle? I’m going to start on a wall next week that’s about 12’ tall using 12”x24” tile.
