Don't forget that many door frame areas have been drilled and nailed to death. When you replace door reinforce and repair the jam. A weak structure can fail with sufficient force. I managed an apartment complex and we had break ins and a rape. I doubled up the wood, used security strike plates and wood cored metal doors. Also reinforce the hinged side! That is another failure point folks miss. One more note. Select knot and defect free wood and try to find with grain pattern that is parallel to the strike plate. Stronger against strike forces and will have better grip on the long screws.

back in 08 my dad bought a house in nowhere, north carolina. few days after moving in we were robbed. the same day my dad went to home depot and came home with a bunch of supplies to pin-lock all the windows and reinforce door frames with quarter inch steel. over the years we saw a couple scrapes and tool marks but never were we robbed again.

These doors will save your life when police come to raid the wrong house.

People in the comments dont understand. If you were asleep and someone tried to break in they would go for the door first. If the door is reinforced then that means they will probably kick it a bunch of times which basically wakes you up and prepares you for it. Meanwhile they now have to decide if its worth going for a window now that the homeowner is probably awake and alert. If they decide to go for a window now they have to find somethign to break it with if they don't have a tool with them, they also have to climb through the window which can be dangerous as well if its off the ground. It also means if they steal anything they have to either jump out the window which means they can't steal anything too large, or they have to unlock the front door which slows them down. there is no reason NOT to have a reinforced front door.

In Sweden all external doors open outward so that they “can’t” be kicked in no matter the price range

Another tip: If you have glass panes on your front door, be sure to have a double deadbolt lock. You lock it from the inside with a key. No one can break the glass, then reach in to unlock your door with a twist knob.. Be sure to keep the key nearby for an emergency exit in case of fire. 🔥

One great, albeit industrial looking solution is to use three 2×4s equally spaced across the back of the door and a locked metal security/storm door in front. The metal storm door should have spikes to absorb/deter kicks and other impacts. Had an angry manic depressive ex kick down a door with that fortress jamb featured in this video installed! 1. the jamb was about 2/3 up from the bottom of the door instead of halfway. 2. While installing the jamb I told her that it could be defeated by kicks to the MIDDLE causing the door to flex along a mid-longitudinal axis and pop the dead bolt, not knowing one day she would kick it down herself. 😅 Lesson be careful what you teach certain people!

We installed a steel back door. Lots of break ins previously, in our area, through patio doors. I had the pleasure of looking out around midnight, with no lights on, at a bunch of baffled would be burglars staring at my shiny door. Turned on the light and they ran for it.

How to keep away from the FBI and Police Enforcers

I bought a product called door jamb armor which is thick metal and wraps around the jamb. Used a dozen 4 or 4.5" screws, needed to drill additional holes as it only provides 6. You must use the square drill bit or you'll strip the screws before you can drive them in 2 inches. You have to secure the hinges as well or the door is just strong on 1 side. You also need metal wraps for the knobs.

That frame would break if a ram was used. The most secure door is mounted to open out, not into the room. A door & frame installed to open out properly can only be forced open with a truck mounted ram. If a steel door is used & framing is built 2x normal, the ram truck would take out a section of the entire wall to get in.

This reminds me of when Popular Science or Popular Mechanics tried to design a theft proof vacation house in the late 70's. They spent a lot of their effort making the door and door frame extremely strong. The thief went in through the windows.

Those cheap kwikset locks make it too east to pick. Having a 1 sided deadbolt lock from the inside before you sleep is crucial. Also, advanced locks on your windows. And a anti open bar for windows. In case someone is good at slipping window locks or leaves your windows unlocked before you sleep. The metal or wood bar would prevent window ls from opening enough.

I'll just stick to my time tested and true board that blocks the door from opening. It's been used for over a thousand years and still does the trick.

The first thing I do in any new house is replace all the door screws (including a few in each hinge) with 3.5" framing screws. This includes the door into the house from the garage. So few people know that a really common way for Intruders to get in is to break into your car and use the garage door opener.

Why so easy to kick in? Despite the low crime rate, here in Hong Kong most houses have a metal gate in addition to a hard wooden door bolted to a steel frame embedded into concrete wall. Burglary by forcing into homes is very rare.

First thing I did on my house, was add that strike plate with 3 inch screws. You'd have to kick the studs out of the wall to open the door. Strike plate was like 8 bucks, peace of mind is priceless.

All you have to do is break the door handle. It opens right up or breaks off then you just stick a metal pin and turn it. I know because someone broke by door lock like that. The used the metal pin from a belt that goes in the belt holes to turn the lock once they broke it off. They left the belt pin stuck in the door lock.

I am a lifetime carpenter and I have done that type of installation for my entire career and that is why you should hire a professional to do the job also another thing I always found when people install the door knob they do it wrong the little half moon on the bolt is called the bolt lock it should not enter the hole in the jamb it needs to be against the strike plate so the bolt will not be able to be opened with a credit card

Wouldn't it be easier just to go through a window. When I was a fireman a lot of people had their doors barricaded, and you'd be surprised how easy it is to go straight through the wall. And just bypass the door duh!!!!! I have never seen a contractor and I am one nail a door the way he did. You always use screws and you hide it underneath the weather stripping.

I always wondered why Americans have such thin and frail doors (in movies/media anyway) and why they open inwards? My tenement has thick and fireproof steel doors that lock with three hooks on each side and open outward. When the cops came to bust a neighbor they tried busting the door open for an hour but couldn't get in (they got one hook outta six). They eventually had to get someone with a master key to come open the door for them. Edit: I live in Sweden btw.

The very best way to secure any door is to install a gate rod at the bottom of the door drilled directly into the concrete slab or foundation, the thicker the rod the better. Believe me it works great 👍

In Peru is a "rule" using metal door for the entrance. It is way more safe than wood.

On the inside before you put the drywall up put some 2x4’s horizontally between the vertical studs so the 2x4’s can’t flex. Sometimes with a big enough pry bar the vertical 2x4’s will flex because the only thing holding them in place is at the top plate and the bottom plate. By doing this kind of ties it all together and makes it solid.

I was assigned to a SEAL Team as a builder support guy. One of the tasks was to build doors for a breacher team to practice on. Obviously, theyre bringing the "A" game but I would build them to spec. They have longer strike plates than that and hinge security plates as well. But there is a limit. Id always build at least 1 strongest door, they knew it and they would blast the hinges off, blow the lock set with a charge and be right behind it.

In the UK near to every house automatically comes with the steel plate and every door is very secure and thick. A lot of our doors also lock at the top middle and bottom for extra security (done when locking the door with a key)
