Several types of helmet liner existed in the medieval era, and just as many ways were they attached. In this video I demonstrate how I install a suspension liner into my 15th century close helmet, this is a relatively common method from the time period.

Good timing! A lot of guys I know have entirely replaced the leather liner that comes with most helmets with something similar to this. Much more comfortable.

I am impressed on how they have a liner inside the knight helmet, but it's enough space go wear an arming cap. The knight helmet blacksmith designers knew what they were doing, to protect a person's head while wearing it comfortably.

Haha, how coincidental, us talking about liners and then this is your next video. It’s a insightful video and the craftsmanship is beautiful. It must be really rewarding looking at a piece of functioning kit and know you have made every part of it. From raising the shell to sewing the liner. Amazing work as always.

It was our conversation that got me around to finally doing this video! Thank you very much! It is definitely very fulfilling work when everything all falls into place.

Loved the video! Quick question though, can liners replace arming caps or the other way around? Or are they exclusively worn together?

Glad you liked it! I find that decent liners do a great job of replacing arming caps altogether, in all of my helmets with this method of suspension I don't wear anything else other than a little linen coif to keep my hair back haha. I definitely prefer suspension liners like this one over arming caps because the liner, being attached to the helmet itself, makes it so that the helmet is more or less floating around your head, which absorbs impacts far better than just padding alone.

Is it suggested to hug the humble knight? BTW, living, back in the display video of the wisby gauntlets you asked if you should make more dedicated armor porn videos, showing off all of the angles, do you think you could make more of those, possibly show what's underneath stuff, like inside of a glove or something to show us how something is made, how we can imitate what you make? Also buddy is there anything I can do to help the channel? I love what you make, you seem like a nice d00d, and I have an obsession with medieval times, I've been watching you for a while.

Hugs appreciated 🙂. I've been considering how to proceed with the armor porn videos, and I think that I may just include them into the construction videos themselves, then make dedicated videos for larger projects such as entire harnesses and whatnot. What do you think of that? I'm glad you like what I do! Interacting with videos and stuff certainly helps, I'm planning to open a patreon soon as well which I'll announce when I get around to that.

@@LivingManuscript Yeah, making dedicated videos for the bigger, final harness, or armor stuff seems like it would be the more efficient thing to do.

have you ever worn a construction hard hat? im wondering if you can strap them like they are to make room for space and allow for movement before the blow fully makes contact.

idk if what i said makes any sense
@LivingManuscript

It's actually pretty much the same principle! I didn't show it in this video, but a little cord passes through the eyelets on top and pulls the lobes of the liner together, which suspends the steel away from my head so that it moves and absorbs a lot of the impact before it reaches me.

@@LivingManuscript oh ok that makes sense thank you. im sure it absorbs a small amount of sound as well. i imagine the ringing
@LivingManuscript
@LivingManuscript 5 лет назад
@@deepseaknight416 definitely! Especially since its attached near the bottom of the helmet near the edge. Thay, and once I have my head crammed inside any ring is essentially eliminated

Hi, how did you add that strap around the inside of the helmet, also what kinds of screws did you use
@LivingManuscript
@LivingManuscript 5 лет назад
Hello! If I recall correctly I believe I showed how I put the leather band in an earlier video about this particular helmet. If not, I just cut a leather strip, then riveted it around the browline of the helmet's skull, no screws needed
