For those that might still be confused, like I was when first starting, the #5 wire goes to common on the contactor, not the capacitor...1 to run, 2 to start, 5 to common...Thats potential relays...Again, that common, for #5 from the relay, goes ON THE CONTACTOR power out..I've seen people get this wrong, confusing common, but this video is clear and well done.

The circuit diagram that comes with the 521, makes the connection points crystal clear.

@@PH-md8xp For most...Some people think a common wire or terminal is neutral...Of course these people shouldn't be dealing with electric in the first place, but they're out there...They even think a common terminal on a switch is for the common wire and that common wire, the neutral, not the power source...Yeah, Smoke that switch...Like I said, they're out there.

After watching your video, I installed a 521 3 wire kit that I bought probably almost two years ago but never got around to. Turns out when I opened the electric panel up there was already a Supco SPP7s installed. I pulled that out and put the 521 kit in and I went from loud starts and dimming lights to barely noticeable when the compressor kicks on. I replaced the capacitor at the same time after watching your capacitor video. Turns out neither were the root of my no AC problem as it was the float switch under the fan in my attic - which I determined after watching yet another of your videos. Fantastic resources - thank you!

If you have a clamp meter with an Inrush function, it’s possible to measure the current flowing into the compressor before and after the install of these hard start kits. There’s usually a significant difference and it’s just satisfying to know that the thing is helping your compressor do it’s thing.

Thanks my Man !! Used your video yesterday and installed a 521 Kit on our 1 year old, 4 Ton, 14 Seer split A/C system that was installed last July. Two things that I noticed after install was that system is a lot quiter on start up and the loud noise that the compressor used to make at the end of each cycle was a lot quiter too and almost non-existent !! Great video, keep up the Good Work !!

I installed one of these 5-2-1 Hard Start kits (CSRU2) just like in this video in a Goodman unit from 2016 and it let all the smoke out of the Hard Start Capacitor, looks like I may have a defective unit so I have another on order. Thanks for making this video, I was able to double check that it wasn't me that wired it wrong LOL!

excellent video, recommended it in an amazon hard start kit review. dont know if it helps, but instead of just connecting the wire tabs, i sprayed contact cleaner on every tab of all the components, scrubbed with a toothbrush, then applied conductive carbon grease on the tabs to prevent future corrosion and improve electrical conductivity.

As. Handyman I have been following your channel for quite a while. I really learn plenty. I did this upgrade to my AC system a couple of years ago as I discovered that the inrush amp draw was nearing the locked rotor amp limited listed on the the unit for the compressor. Prior to installing it the unit was struggling to start. You could hear the difference afterwards. It’s an amazing difference. It makes me wonder why AC manufacturers don’t include a “hard start kit” as a normal part of the units. Built in obsolescence perhaps...? Anyway, I enjoy your extremely clear, professionally prepared videos. Your an excellent teacher! I’m always looking forward to see more of your videos! Thank you very much!
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 4 года назад
Thank you Richard! Glad to hear that my videos have been helpful and that the hard start made a big difference for your unit! As far as I know, many manufacturers actually did include a hard start capacitor and potential relay (basically a 521 kit) in older units. But to cut costs, this "un-necessary" part gradually started being omitted in newer units until now, when it's only the premium expensive units that still come with them. Well it actually kills two birds with one stone for them - the compressor does not last as long so people have to buy a new unit sooner and their production costs slightly decrease.

Thanks to this guy, I install the hard start kit and it work. But I also instead a new capacitor since it is completely dead. I manage to orient the 3 wire hard start kit in an upright position as indicated on the diagram and on this video...but it is so damm hard to drill a hole and it was hot outside. In the end, I just used tape and hope that it stick. I turn it on and wahla....everything running again. Even the fan is spinning. It wasn't spinning before. First time opening up the air conditioner, I noticed someone had installed a hard start kit compressor previously. So I ended up leaving it there and hooking up both start kits. This is my first time doing this fix and it is a life saver because I have no idea who to call for help. And it is summer and it's hot, I cannot stand the heat.

You are correct that the start capacitor should be installed with the terminals up. As per the instructions: "Mount the 5-2-1® Kit potential relay and start capacitor in a suitable location within the electrical box. The potential relay should be mounted with the mounting tab up. The capacitor should be mounted with the terminals up." REASON: Most Capacitors are oil filled and could be subject to leakage therefore it is always recommended to minimize the chance of leakage

I was painting the outside of my house in the sun last week though and I can understand a little.. It does get really hot! One of my chickens was killed by a weasel at night. I got out there before it could kill the others. I started closing their coop door for the night now. Oh dear, instead of weasels, there's snake problems over there.. I don't know what's worse.

Your videos are awesome and easy to understand. THank you? I installed this kit on my AC unit months ago, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly. Thanks to this video, I just learned that I have a single pole contactor, and I attached the black wire of the kit to one of the T1 terminals of the side that has constant line power. That's the side with the black wire coming in and thus why I chose it. Did I do that correctly? Or should the 5 wire been connected to the other side of the contactor that has the plunger? THANK YOU

Thanks. My AC cap failed but the cap in the 521 kept the system running. Cooling fan was turning in reverse, blow the hot air to ground, yellowing the grass around. The unit was hot, I believe the compressor were hot too. After watching your RU-vid, replaced the run capacitor. Fixed. Now I ordered an extra capacitor and I came with “CPT” port. That supposed prevent the compressor from running when the cap goes bad, rather than 521 cap over heating the system. Good idea. But I don’t know how to connect the 521 to CPT port. My best guess to connect the wire goes to C to CPT. ??? Thanks.

Nice info !!! ..... I get how it works.....but need to ask this---> the hard start kit includes a relay and a separate capacitor....that helps for that fraction of a second ( or so) during the starting-time....and then drops out immediately after.. What is the probability that the new capacitor or relay may become defective and it doesn't drop out? Seems it will damage the unit....quite a kick in the pants if doing this is to "improve" the life of your core equipment. So....how reliable are these new components and how often do we see these fail?

If you suspect a hard start is no longer working based on over 90% of LRA on startup, do you just test it same as a capacitor? Also see you have brush coil condenser. Can you make a video of best cleaning practices on those please??
@WordofAdviceTV

Yes, you would test it like a normal capacitor to check if it's bad or not. As for the spine fin coil, I normally just hose my unit down and that is sufficient. In fact I don't even spray it from inside out, just from the outside is enough. There is no need to get it super clean as long as you get most of the stuff off of it. I do show how I clean mine in my AC Maintenance video

Installed my 5-2-1 hard start and did a white wire check and showed around 20amps with my clamp meter with no difference so I'll check it again but do recall connecting my yellow/green stripped wire to Hemp on the capacitor and the red to common to the capacitor as well. The black wire is to black terminal on contactor albeit I need to check whether it's on the input side or the output side. I'll update it if I notice any amp change.

Can I connect it to the hot side of the contactor instead of the switch side? The compressor uses less amps when it's connected directly to the hot side...

Thanks for the video - how do you tell is the hard start kit or capacitor goes bad and needs to be replaced?
@pipi7731

I'm a little confused. Does that 5 wire go to the contactor common or to the capacitor common. I watched the How to wire an AC unit and it showed it going to the common on the contactor. Here you show it going to the capacitor common. Or Does it matter as long as it goes to common.

My Compressor recently burned out and was shorted to ground. Prior to that I noticed my main breaker box on the outdoor(compressor) breaker was buzzing intermittently about every 20-30 seconds when a/c, compressor were running, but never tripped the breaker. A/C was also cooling fine. Fast foward about 1 year later and the compresssor shorted out and I had to replace it. Breaker is no longer buzzing while it runs but does have a quick buzz when compressor kicks on and lights slightly dim for a split second. My technician suggested installing a hard start. Is this likely the reason/remedy for the buzzing breaker? Or does that sound like an electrial issue that has nothing to do with the A/C unit? I will probably install a hard start anyways as it cant hurt it.

Yes when a unit is partially burnt out the amps could increase dimming your lights.. Suggest your next AC upgrade go for an inverter. No more dimming lights

From a contractor: To have a hard start kit installed on your compressor, you can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $350. Our prices always include the cost of labor and parts. The overall price of a hard start kit is cheaper than paying for a compressor replacement which can be $2,500 or even more. That's a $20 part, 10 minutes work.

It's never too late if it is still working :) In fact, if what they claim is true, it will actually help your compressor survive a bit longer.

I just installed a 5-2-1 hard start kit following your video today! Thanks so much! I have a question for you. Would the AC still running fine if the kit is actually not working? I am asking because I have another AC which has the kit installed already. I suspect the kit is not working because when AC starts the lights blink.

Just installed a 521 on my Concord Condensor after compressor stopped working. It is now making a really loud rattling noise but is cooling. Any ideas what the issue could be?

Installed a 521 hard start kit this weekend following your instructions on my 15 year old 4 ton R22 system. It started up and ran fine for 5 hours. Then the AC stopped working. When I opened the electrical bay of the condenser the hard start capacitor had blown its top completely off and had covered everything in melted plastic. Some of the wires were melted. I removed the hard start kit and spliced in new wires to the compressor, compressor fan, and run capacitor and now the AC is back up and running. Any idea as to why the 521 hard start kit failed? Could it be just a defective kit? I would send you a picture if I knew how to attach it.

The potential relay didn't -energize and the N.C contact did not open to cut off the power for the start capacitor, after the time it is exploded.

Fyi You had stated that it didn't make a difference which way the hard start capacitor was seated, only the relay. I noticed in the instructions that the hard start capacitor should be placed in the upright position even though it can slip down if not tight. I was told there is some gel in there so it is best seated in the upright position. Anyone else can chime in to clarify!
