As a little bit of preventative maintenance, I decided I wanted to replace the OEM clutch cable on my 2021 Indian Scout Bobber with an upgraded Barnett clutch cable. In this video I show you how easy it is to replace. After taking a few rides I can assure you the clutch level feels smoother, and takes at least 10% less effort to pull in than stock.

note for engineers or aftermarket RD,that cable needs a rubber seal boot on the clutch crank side,cable is upward with cover exposed then curved down then flat,water will find its way.

I did find it a bit strange there was no rubber boot there or at the adjustment point.

So how did you address this problem

The OEM version has the rubber seal boot, we can potentially just transfer it

As usual, nicely done video. I also replaced stock cable last year ( kept original as backup ). I would have liked if Barnett would have added the two rubber boots that came with original. What I did with lower adjustment barrel, was bought some self fusing black tape. Cut off 8" and wrapped it around barrel starting 1/2" before adjuster, and wrapping 1/2' beyond the end. Be sure to pull tape tight, or it will not work. This will keep the adjuster clean and rust free for future adjustments. The one odd thing I noticed after installing was clutch engages much sooner than with orig. cable. Free play is dead on. Let me know if you noticed the same.

Thanks Mike! I thought about reusing the stock dust boot but decided against it. I figured if Barnett was worried about it, they would have provided something lol. Your method sounds like a good idea. For me, it doesn't feel like the clutch engagement point changed at all, just easier to pull and smoother.

Hi! I watched this and the clutch adjustment video. I just installed a Barnett clutch and cable on my bobber…but I cannot for the life of me find the sweet spot (free play) it either doesn’t fully disengage (2 fingers on clutch) so it’ll pull forward when I shift from neutral to first. Or I adjust it enough so it doesn’t pull forward but then it’s a bastard to shift down into 3rd, 2nd, and 1st. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong here

Man, could u please share with me what are the size of your blue colored bolts? Also, what did you do for getting those blue accent stripes in the indian logo?
@Jimbobbington
@Jimbobbington 28 дней назад
I don't know the size of the bolts, they all came in a kit i purchased that is no longer available. The tank is just double layered vinyl.

Hey Sir, appreciate this video. Instructions seem easy enough to follow. I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment though, and hoping you might have some advice. So, I'm still waiting for my barnett cable to arrive. In the interim, I removed the stock cable. I also changed the oil and swapped out the clutch cover assembly for a new one since the chrome on mine was pitted (I bought the bike used). So one thing I noticed after I swapped out the cover assembly is the part where the clutch engages with the clutch cable (reference 1:40 in your video where you pry this part down with pliers to remove the barrel end of the cable), this part is no longer under tension and just swings freely between the up and down positions without the assist of pliers. I'm not sure what happened. My fear is that I somehow put the new cover on incorrectly. This means that I will have to drain the oil again to take the cover assembly off, which will be a huge pain in the ass. Any suggestions?
@Jimbobbington
@Jimbobbington Год назад
Well that doesn't sound good! I'm honestly not sure how that part engages with the clutch. I don't understand how it would have come apart if you didn't actually remove the clutch. I even watched a video of someone replacing the clutch and saw no mention of having to do anything with that arm.
@TheShortcop
@TheShortcop Год назад
@@Jimbobbington I solved it. The clutch actuator was one tooth off when interfacing with the clutch. Just had to pull the assembly off and move the actuator up one spot. Didn't need to drain the oil, I think that's only really necessary if you're changing out the actual clutch.

Thank you so much for this. However, you happen to be lucky enough to have the Hacker Mayhem exhaust & headers, which makes it SO MUCH easier to access the clutch barrel near the carter. Wonder if you can do it without removing the stock headers to remove the carter side barrel. Must be more finnicky. Also weirdly enough, I talked about the barnett cable to my local (Lille, France) indian dealership mechanic, and he said they almost never had to replace clutch cables on Scouts, and he's never had one from a customer that snapped, but forums and FB groups seem to say otherwise.
@Jimbobbington
@Jimbobbington Год назад
The stock headers do make it more difficult to see, but you can still access the adjustment nuts just about as easy. I have a short video on my channel on how to adjust the clutch I made a long time ago when I still had oem headers and GP Shortys and it's still as simple a process.

I have a emergency issue, can I use the clutch cable of bobber for scout ? My cable was broken but I only have cable of bobber in my country

I really love my scout but after a month I’m getting error codes 651 5, 520547 5, and 520548 5. Two of them are not in the manual and the front injector constantly cutting out sucks. Hopefully the dealer can fix it but such a shame it’s the first bike to actually make me smile.
@Jimbobbington
@Jimbobbington Год назад
That sucks! Doesn't sound like a common issue, maybe you ended up with a bad coil pack or something easy to fix!
@MastaKeahi
@MastaKeahi Год назад
@@Jimbobbington hopefully. I found a lot of post about the error code on Polaris forums about their side by sides but the main solution they had was to replace the wire harness. I know my scout still has the fuel pump recall so hopefully it’s just that. Not sure how they sold it to me without the recall fixed but who knows.

DO NOT grease the actual cable between the barrel and the sheath. From Indian clutch video. Only the barrels gets grease.
