How to use a $50 Polaris regulator from amazon in a 90 hp 4 stroke outboard! This regulator puts out 50 amps. Works on a 3 phase stator / 11 pole to get back on the water, instead of having to wait over a month on back order!
but it is not the voltage regulator that generates the 50 amps... it has the ability to release 50 amps if the stator can generate it. and for it to have this ability, it involves a little bit of physics ( electromagnetic fields in the coils ) so if the stator is designed to generate 40 amps , no matter what voltage regulator you have there, the DC will only provide 40 amps. You can check it out using a clamp meter measuring the current passing through the red wire without the boat circuit connected, otherwise you will have a current divided and what you will measure gives you false information since part of the current will be going to places other than the battery.
No worries. Do you have analogue gauges on your boat? Did the motor idle smoother when you unplugged the stator from the faulty regulator to test it's output, or did the low battery voltage still cause it to still run rough?
I like the new 2 stroke evinrudes. lb for lb they are more powerful, HP for HP they make the boat go faster, cheaper simpler engine, and no oil changes, but they are out of business now because no one likes 2 stroke anymore.
