Hand File Set: amzn.to/3lEeCEZ
This video covers my first attempt at installing a laminate countertop end cap. I am not a pro but that is the whole point as I assume you are not either. I take the approach of a beginner (because I am one) but also was very pleased with the end product after spending some significant time hand filing down to a finished look.

How do you cut the trim piece? So your lining up the trim piece to the top section of the counter, how do you trim the bottom portion?

I've done alot of counter tops over the years ,but those end pieces hardly ever stay on . I've tried different ways to pu them on . Doesn't work bad design. It would be better if they just gave you the end pieces and some contact cement.

Use a PENCIL! The sharpie tip is a soft sponge, which means you most likely will mark the edge of your countertop as well

Probably should have used clear caulking cause we have the sore thumb scenario. Otherwise. Well done

I've never used an iron before and just bought one for my end caps and my question is do I put water in it ? I see there is a reservoir for water.

This is the first time I have done endcaps. When I saw the par about using an iron, my first, second, and third thought was "this is never going to work". Just have a little faith. I just finished three out of four endcaps, and it really works, exactly as stated. Endcaps and counters came from Lowe's.

Good video but there's one error. The 3/4" filler is not supposed to be installed vertically. It won't line up to the front lip. The manufacturer specifies it's to be installed horizontally.

How did you deal with the fact that the front of the counter didn't line up with the front of the side because you installed the filler stick sideways?

There is a special bit for trimming Formica end caps... just ask at your local hardware or major home supply box store, Harbor Frieght if you have one... easy peasy

Why not use a Drexel to trim off excess?
@EverydayHomeRepairs
@EverydayHomeRepairs 3 года назад
That would work and would be much faster but should use a flush cut bit to reduce the chances of over cutting. This was for those without a Dremel or Router.

You should have shown where you trim off the excess before you apply the piece of the counter. 👎

Do you need to seal that edge? What if it doesn't completely adhere? The guy who install mine didn't use an iron, but contact cement.

I don’t feel so bad now. I use the same tools and method that you did in this video. A friend was doing a remodel on a house and he actually used a saw and cut off a peninsula and wanted to use an end cap kit to cover the new exposed counter end. Every video I looked at was for new countertops and they used a router. Thank you for this video!

I also use side cutter pliers to trim it down but I would practice a bit to ensure you don't snip off too much.

Hey Mike, yeah for that one I did use scissors. Tin Snips work better amzn.to/3arr7xS. Best of luck on the project and I also have this video which shows gluing down laminate sheets and doing a lot of trimming which might help ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uObZY3YI6AM.html

Should mention how long it takes to file that edge. From my own experience it takes way to long. However on one already installed the router will only make it so far when you get close to the wall. Leaving still a while of work filing that back area. It's worth loosening the countertop if you can, so you can slide the counter forward and using the router . I about lost my mind trying to file these things down. Lol
